John Pierce (born 1957) is an American bass player known for his work with the rock bands Huey Lewis and the News and Pablo Cruise. He is currently a member of the rock band Toto.[1]
Early life
[edit]Pierce was born in Los Angeles, California in 1957. He became friends with Toto guitarist Steve Lukather as a young boy. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and joined the Big Band at the school.[2]
Career
[edit]After two years at Berklee, Pierce became one of Los Angeles’ busiest studio musicians, playing with the likes of Mick Jagger, Tom Petty, Bruce Hornsby, Paul Westerberg and Boz Scaggs. It was during this time, while working with Scaggs on his album "Middle Man" record producer/ engineer Bill Schnee introduced Pierce to the band Pablo Cruise. After joining the band, Pierce lived in the Bay Area for four years from 1980 to 1984.
Huey Lewis and the News
[edit]Pierce first met Huey Lewis during this time in the early '80s while he was still a member of Pablo Cruise. He did fill in with the News for a brief stint in 1986 while the band was on their tour in support of their album "Fore!". Eight years later in 1994, Pierce joined the band after the departure of original bassist Mario Cippolina. The band was active until 2019, after Huey Lewis began experiencing issues with hearing as a result of Ménière's disease.
