Pohuwato is a regency of Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. It is located on the northern (or Minahasa) peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. It was established on 25 February 2003 under Law Number (Undang-Undang Nomor) 6/2003 by splitting off from the western part of Boalemo Regency. It has an area of 4,244.31 km2, and had a population of 128,748 at the 2010 Census[2] and 146,432 at the 2020 Census;[3] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 160,187 (comprising 81,612 males and 78,575 females).[1] The seat of the regency administration is in the town of Marisa.
History
[edit]On 21 September 2023, Pohuwato regent office and Regional People's Representative Council building were burned by local miners. They demanded PT Pani Gold Project (PGP) or PT Puncak Emas Tani Sejahtera (PETS, a subsidiary of Merdeka Copper Gold[4]) to return the ancestral land they worked on. Previously, the protesters have raided the company's office on the same day.[5][6] The offices were later demolished on 4 December 2023.[7]
Administrative Districts
[edit]Pohuwato Regency is divided into thirteen districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census[2] and the 2020 Census,[3] together with the official estimates as at mid 2023.[1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of administrative villages in each district (totaling 101 rural desa and 3 urban kelurahan - the latter all in Paguat District), and its postal codes.
