Template talk:Governorates of Egypt

Is this template correct?

[edit]

Option #1

[edit]

Consider this. -> According to statoids.org (which is based on Census data) there are classes of governorates. Should the governorates template reflect CLASSES OF GOVERNORATES as follows?

  • C: (City) urban governorates
  • D: (Desert) frontier governorates
  • L: Governorates of Lower (downstream) Egypt
  • U: Governorates of Upper Egypt"

Ad Daqahlīyah L, Al Bahr al Ahmar D, Al Buhayrah L, Al Fayyūm U, Al Gharbīyah L, Al Iskandarīyah C, Al Ismā`īlīyah L, Al Jīzah U, Al Minūfīyah L, Al Minyā U, Al Qāhirah C, Al Qalyūbīyah L, Al Uqsur C, Al Wādī al Jadīd D, Ash Sharqīyah L, As Suways C, Aswān U, Asyūt U, Banī Suwayf U, Būr Sa`īd C, Dumyāt L, Janūb Sīnā' D Kafr ash Shaykh L, Matrūh D, Qinā U, Shamal Sīnā' D, Sūhāj U

So if we go with this option, the template would be something like this (but would have to fix the spelling of the names)

  • (City) urban governorates - Būr Sa`īd, As Suways, Al Iskandarīyah, , Al Qāhirah, Al Uqsur,
  • (Desert) frontier governorates - Shamal Sīnā', Matrūh, Janūb Sīnā', Al Wādī al Jadīd, Al Bahr al Ahmar,
  • Governorates of Lower (downstream) Egypt -Kafr ash Shaykh, Dumyāt, Ash Sharqīyah, Al Ismā`īlīyah, Al Minūfīyah, Ad Daqahlīyah, Al Buhayrah, Al Gharbīyah, Al Qalyūbīyah
  • Governorates of Upper Egypt - Sūhāj, Qinā, Banī Suwayf, Aswān, Asyūt, Al Minyā, Al Jīzah, Al Fayyūm

I like this option because it's based on census data plus it tells you something about the Governorate.Level C (talk) 02:29, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I found a reference for this option here: http://ccdl.libraries.claremont.edu/cdm/ref/collection/cce/id/1973 Level C (talk) 01:54, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Level C: Do you know what official information this is based on? I really don't think they need to be divided into further sub-categories in the template, the list is pretty straightforward. Turnopoems (talk) 20:14, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No @Turnopoems:, I have no idea what the info on this template is based on. I've no idea what this template is trying to say by grouping the governorates like this. I also don't think they need to be divided into further sub-categories (and when I showed the Statoids.com source, I was not trying to imply to further subdivide - God forbid!). No, what I'm asking is 'why is it Upper Egypt, Middle Egypt, Lower Egypt, Canal, Sinai'? "the list is pretty straightforward" doesn't really tell me anything. Thanks and have a good weekend! I'm against this option because using it would imply the govenorates are in a tier below, which is wrong. Governorates are 1st-tier administartive divisions. It'd be like trying to combine water and oil. Level C (talk) 02:38, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Option #4

[edit]

Just show the governorates and nothing else. For an example, it could mimic this format. and just say Egypt Governorates...

I like this option as well. but not as much as I like option #1.Level C (talk) 03:31, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Level C: I misread what you said, my bad. I like option 1, we could word it like this:
  • Urban
  • Frontier/Border
  • Upper Egypt
  • Lower Egypt
The problem is that these kind of overlap a bit, Cairo and Alexandria are both urban governorates and in Lower Egypt. Perhaps we could do away with "urban", or maybe option 4 is the only way to avoid the overlap issue. Alternatively, we could look for an official source that supports categorizing the governorates in this way. Turnopoems (talk) 11:50, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For all intents and purposes, option # 1 and #4 are the same. Source found here and in CAPMAS. http://ccdl.libraries.claremont.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/cce/id/1973/rec/1 Level C (talk) 17:12, 26 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
