The Institute of Science Tokyo (東京科学大学, Tōkyō Kagaku Daigaku) is a planned public research university in Tokyo, Japan. It will be formed by merging Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) with Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech). All students, faculty, and assets of these two universities will become one under the new university on 1 October 2024, the planned establishment day of the university.[1]

The new university will cover the fields of natural sciences, engineering, medicine and dentistry. It is expected to be the second most productive research institution in the country by h-index after the University of Tokyo.[2]

Background of the merger[edit]

The planned merger between Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) aims to address the declining research performance of Japanese academia and counter Japan's long-term economic downturn, according to the presidents of these two universities. President Tanaka of TMDU seeks to overcome current limitations in medical and dental research by promoting collaboration and a more efficient allocation of resources throughout the new university. Tokyo Tech President Masu, recognising a stagnation in the traditional manufacturing sector in the country and the need for innovation in engineering, sees the merger as an opportunity to redefine engineering and create new industries focused on sustainability and well-being. The merger aims to leverage the strengths of both institutions to enhance educational and research quality, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and societal contributions.[3][4]
