John Francis Lauro is a criminal defense attorney from Tampa, Florida specializing in white-collar crime. Lauro has been involved in many high-profile proceedings, most notably the 2023 federal case against former United States President, Donald J. Trump for attempting to overturn the 2020 United States Presidential election results.[3][4][5]
Early life and education[edit]
Lauro grew up in New York, living in both Brooklyn and Wantagh during his youth.[6] Lauro completed his undergraduate education at Georgetown University where he graduated magna cum laude, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to attend law school at Georgetown University Law, from which he also graduated magna cum laude, receiving his Juris Doctor degree.[7]

Together with his business partner Gregory Singer, Lauro started the law firm Lauro & Singer. The firm has offices in Tampa and Miami, Florida as well as in Manhattan, New York.[8]
Criminal conspiracy case against Donald J. Trump[edit]
On August 1, 2023, former President Donald J. Trump was federally indicted for his involvement in numerous criminal conspiracies to overturn the results of the 2020 United States Presidential election on January 6, 2021. Lauro was announced to be representing him the month prior, and broke his silence on the matter following Trump's indictment. He revealed early hints at their legal strategy, which will include blaming John Eastman, one of Trump's lawyers, for allegedly giving him advice that made Trump believe he was acting completely within the law. Speaking on the halting of Congress from counting the electoral votes on January 6, Lauro stated, “That’s the only thing that President Trump suggested.. [halting the counting] was done with lawyers giving him advice.”[9] Lauro himself admitted that President Trump had attempted to delay the counting of the votes. On Fox News, Lauro stated, “What President Trump said is: ‘Let’s go with option D.. Let’s just halt, let’s just pause the voting and allow the state legislatures to take one last look and make a determination as to whether or not the elections were handled fairly.’”[10]

Lauro and his then-wife, Darlene Duryea, moved to Tampa, Florida in 1988.[6]
