The historical video game belongs to a video game genre in which stories are based upon historical events, environments, or people. Some historical video games are simulators, which attempt an accurate portrayal of a historical event, civilization or biography, to the degree that the available historical research will allow. Other historical video games are fictionalized tales that are based on mythology, legends or a fictional character within a historical setting.

God of War III 2010 389–426 AD Decline of Greco-Roman polytheism presented as destruction of Greek pantheon and massacre of Greek gods by Kratos. City of Olympia, Greece appears in the game as being attacked by centaurs, cyclops, chimeras and titans. For each time Kratos killed a god, a disaster occurs. In real history, Olympia was a major Panhellenic religious sanctuary of ancient Greece, where the ancient Olympic Games were held every four years throughout Classical antiquity, from 776 BC to 394 AD. In the 3rd century, Olympia the site suffer heavy damage from a series of earthquakes and from germanic invasion. The Temple of Zeus was destroyed around 426 AD.

The game world parodies contemporary American culture, with satirical depictions of social media and influencer culture, and references to Internet memes such as Florida Man.
