Etymology[edit]
The word parotid comes from the Ancient Greek: πᾰρᾰ́ (pará, "beside; next to, near, from; against, contrary to") + ὠτ- (ōt-, from οὖς oûs, "ear") + -id, thus "next to, near the ear".
