Big problem with this template[edit]

Hi! I applaud the work that's been done on this template, and I can see where it would be useful in many places. Unfortunately, in its current form it suffers from a major problem: many, if not most, of the pages it links to are disambiguation pages, which should not be linked to. For instance, I disambiguate incoming links to Danish, which is how I found this template: the Denmark link in the template goes to Danish. This urgently needs to be fixed, and my suggestion would be to link the country names to the country articles instead (e.g., let Denmark link to Denmark), but I leave that to someone else's judgment; however, the links need to be fixed ASAP. Thanks. --Tkynerd (talk) 01:17, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I understand it, this template is a generator page for templates about subjects common to European countries. The generated templates might include, "People of ...", History of ...", etc. Using Romania as an example, the generated links might include "Romanian people", "Romanian history", etc. Since this is a "Generator page", not accessed by the end user, there is no need to change the links to disambiguation pages. - Canglesea (talk) 20:00, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would endorse the initial point. The template current leads to pages like [[Hungarian]] which is a page of disambiguation. Looking at the response, can I suggest that it link to [[Hungarian people]] etc. may be the way to go. A fix would be really useful. :-) -- billinghurst (talk) 03:28, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, User:Canglesea is correct. This is a template that isn't accessed directly by readers, and the links it creates don't generally go to disambiguation pages, so there is no need to change the template. --Tkynerd (talk) 03:42, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just see it here Special:WhatLinksHere/Hungarian (b/w links 101 & 150) if that is okay, then sweet with me -- billinghurst (talk) 05:37, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply, but anyway: I see it too, because I regularly dab incoming links to Danish, English, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. It shows up under all of those. It's kind of irritating, but I've learned to ignore it. :) --Tkynerd (talk) 22:45, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

Don't merge This template creates links that differentiate significantly from those of Template:Europe topic and can reduce the number of required redirect pages. --Jhattara (Talk · Contrib) 10:01, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with Air Forces[edit]

In the European Air forces template, some of the links to not connect to the articles. --EZ1234 (talk) 04:53, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you state which specific air force articles do not work? Those should probably then require adding some navigational redirects. --Jhattara (Talk · Contrib) 08:15, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As Andorra does not have an air force, the Andorran Air Force is likely to remain a red link for as long as this situation persists. There are no indications of a future change and so the template is somewhat misleading in this regard. Greenshed (talk) 21:04, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is no way we can disable specific countries from this template, just because they don't have something used to link with this template. --Jhattara (Talk · Contrib) 08:59, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Then either the template should be enhanced or it should not be used for air forces. Greenshed (talk) 18:04, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This template is intended as a navigational aid. If we'd add all such exceptions the source of this template would become unreadable and uneditable. If you are so concerned about the existance of Andorra in the Airforce template then create the page for it and tell in there that the defense of Andorra is handled by Spain and France. --Jhattara (Talk · Contrib) 08:06, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, a similar situation exists regarding Iceland, Liechtenstein and Monaco. Secondly, if we really must have a template listing air forces in Europe then I see no good reason why it could not have its own template rather than using this meta-template. As to your suggestion above, I must state my disagreement with it. Not all readers will want to click through to articles on the fictional Andorran Air Force, Icelandic Air Force, Liechtenstein Air Force and Monégasque Air Force only to read that it's an article about something that has never exisited. For those readers who do not click through, they will be misled (and are currently being misled) that these air forces exist as they appear in the list on the template. Greenshed (talk) 21:44, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, although this template is mainly used in airforce templates, it's not meant to be an airforce template. It is meant to be available for whatever article sets that might use the country's adjective in the title. If you see a need for a specialized Airforce template feel free to create it. --Jhattara (Talk · Contrib) 10:16, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New italian empire ?[edit]

In european template for navigational boxes it is a note (1) on to Italy who says: <<Has part of its territory outside Europe>>. So, i'm italian, can i know where are this territories outside Europe ? Sicily and all its isles are in Europe, could somebody correct it please, cause i've not understood how to correct ? Proposal for topic templates[edit]

A centralised proposal regarding the use of superscript notes in navigation boxes is under discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries. The disussion will affect this template. Nightw 12:04, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cornwall[edit]

I originally added Cornwall to the list thinking that this was the template for European Cuisine. I added it under the United Kingdom, as several other places are also listed under it. This was reverted because Cornwall in not a 'country' even though the section says nothing about them having to be 'countries' when listed under a sovereign state. Anyway I've now added it to the 'other territories' section. All of the topics that this European topic is used for that I've seen have corresponding Cornish pages, such as Cornish cuisine.Bodrugan (talk) 19:50, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cornwall doesn't have a special status, unlike the other countries and dependencies. There may be an article for Cornish cuisine, but this template is used for many other things as well, e.g. on Belgian Navy or Hungarian Air Force and other similar articles (there is no Cornish navy or air force), or on List of Croatian counties by GDP.
Articles like Cornish cuisine and similar Cornish ones should probably best be treated like Basque cuisine, Occitan cuisine, Cuisine of Dorset, Catalan cuisine, Cuisine of the Ionian islands, ..., none of which are added to the "European topic", "Europe topic", or "topic by country" templates. A link to a DAB page[edit]

In Czech folklore, this template is creating a link to the DAB page British folklore. This is a WP:INTDAB error, and User:DPL bot is reporting it as such. Can this problem be fixed? Narky Blert (talk) 17:12, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
