This template seems to need some work. For example, Suburbia Roller Derby. Going to their web site one note that they play at two (and now three?) public venues in their area, one of them being the Yonkers Police Athletic League and another being the E.J. Murray Memorial Skating Center. Not terribly difficult to dig this info up by perusing league web sites.

Another issue, how is the list to be sorted? It would appear that someone took an older version of the list of leagues and gradually replaced wiki-links to league articles with wiki-links to venue articles. Without including info on the leagues there seems to be no easy way to keep the list sorted appropriately in this manner. I'd suggest switching to alphabetical, ignoring articles like "the." With so many leagues not having dedicated venues, is this template worth having? Or is it maybe better to delete the entries for leagues that don't have permanent venues, and only include those that do? For example, Montreal uses different venues depending on time of year, but I believe they always use the two, do they get listed? Toronto uses the same venue year-round, but it is a warehouse space on an old air base, and the building itself does not have an article to link to, and is only mentioned in brief on the park's article. Minnesota uses Roy Wilkins Auditorium, and THAT is a significant venue. Not sure what criteria are best used here. Echoedmyron (talk) 22:58, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why not let Wikipedia be the judge? In other words, don't create links to venues that don't have articles. I don't imagine Toronto Roller Derby's "Bunker" would get an article that would "make it" on Wikipedia. I don't see a major problem with multiple venues per league, so long as those venues have articles (preferably articles that reference the league in some way). If someone wants to create an article for a venue, that article would need to meet the usual standards for notability and have citations.

Otherwise we've either got to list EVERY venue used by any WFTDA league (NOT easy to do) or arbitrarily decide which ones merit listing and which don't. TimBRoy (talk) 04:41, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My point was that having a template that can only be used for less than an quarter of the venues out there didn't seem worthwhile. And that a league by definition is not a venue. You're right, many venues, the Bunker included, are not worthy of their own articles. I only link to venues when I can find a an existing article, or if I'm able to create one. I'm just wondering if this amounts to clutter. We certainly can have multiple venues listed for leagues, but I'm inclined to think that the place for those listings is within the league articles themselves. I've proposed in the past that there be some sort of wikiproject or guideline for how roller derby league articles are structured, but there did not seem to be interest. There's already a lot of inconsistency when one compares league articles - and I've seen people outside of the derby world confused that we treat leagues and their charter travel teams almost interchangeably; for instance, there's an article on Gotham, but not a separate article on their travel team. Any other sport focuses on the teams. It's tricky to apply wiki guidelines to a sport that has none of its own (in wiki terms, that is) and to one that is operated so differently from professional sport.

I'm willing to help you out with this template if you like, to find a way to make it more useful and find a consistent way to use it. I'd be interested in feedback from other editors though. I'm always loathe to post for input on roller derby related articles on any of the wiki boards for fear some admin will look at things and start deciding that the merit is not there. This template is divided into Regions, and the WFTDA stopped using regional designations in 2013 (although who knows, they may someday return to them). Would it perhaps be better to reorganize this template to be divided by country, since that's not going to change? That would then mirror how the templates for Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 1, Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 2 and Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 3 are organized. Would obviously mean that the section for the United States is the largest - provided that we maintain the redlinked venues on the off chance that some eventually earn venues of their own.
