Why doesn't this template use WPBannerMeta?[edit]

Is there any specific reason this template doesn't use {{WPBannerMeta}}? WPBannerMeta will support a B class checklist and up to 15 workgroups (via hooks). Is there a specific feature that it doesn't support that is needed? Kaldari (talk) 04:56, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Have the issues brought up since the 2009 discussion been addressed? But the current code of the template is simple enough to follow along that I don't see a switch being produced. —Farix (t | c) 13:28, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
To some it up, WPBannerMeta forced certain behaviors and a category scheme that WikiProject Anime and manga did not want. While it would have been extremely trivial to update WPBannerMeta's code to allow WikiProject Anime and manga to use its existing behaviors and category scheme, there was a great deal of resistance to it because the mass conversion to WPBannerMeta created a fait accompli situation. —Farix (t | c) 13:53, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
@TheFarix: Most of the issues brought up in that discussion appear to have either been resolved or were rather minor differences. Having standard conventions and sharing a single template makes it possible for people to write tools to support WikiProjects. When every project has its own conventions, it's very difficult to write tools that work for all of them. That's actually the reason I'm asking. Currently, WikiProject Anime and manga is one of the only WikiProjects that isn't supported by the PageAssessments extension (which is, in turn, used by several Tool Labs tools). It seems like it would be rather trivial to migrate this project to {{WPBannerMeta}}, unlike for example, {{WikiProject Military History}}, which would then make this project compatible with all the tools that use PageAssessments data (for example, CopyPatrol). Kaldari (talk) 05:14, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
The main issue was the categorization scheme and behaviors, in that categorizes, redirects, files and project pages where given an "importance" assessment when they should have. Looking at {{WPBannerMeta}}'s documentation, it doesn't appear that those where ever addressed. And calling them "minor differences" is downplaying these problems is part of the fait accompli I had just mentioned. Until {{WPBannerMeta}} allows for the current behavior and categorizations of {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} to me maintain, a conversion is a non-starter. —Farix (t | c) 05:22, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
@TheFarix: In the discussion that you linked to, the main issue regarding importance was that {{WPBannerMeta}} always showed importance, which was changed at the request of WikiProject Anime and manga: "G.A.S's point is that our banner doesn't show the importance row on non-articles; I don't think the categorization would really be a problem for us." Whether or not there is an NA-importance category doesn't seem like it would actually matter that much. Why is it a problem if such a category exists? I agree that it might be unnecessary, but it hardly seems like a good reason to use a completely different template. Kaldari (talk) 21:32, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
AN NA-importance category isn't the only problem. The redirects, templates, categories, files, portal pages, and project pages all use a different naming scheme (the original schema in fact). It would be one thing if {{WPBannerMeta}} allowed for category overrides, but it doesn't and likely never will. These may seem minor issues to you, but they aren't and are among the reasons this template was never converted. —Farix (t | c) 20:07, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
@TheFarix: {{WPBannerMeta}} does allow category overrides via hooks. See for example {{Etymology section}} which completely overrides the class assessment system (including the categories) via the HOOK_ASSESS parameter. Kaldari (talk) 23:11, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
@TheFarix: Would there be any objection to migrating to {{WPBannerMeta}} if it keeps the existing category naming scheme? Migrating to {{WPBannerMeta}} would also fix Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Popular pages (which relies on parser functions in WPBannerMeta). Kaldari (talk) 06:57, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
@TheFarix and Kaldari: Any update on this issue? I got a bug report that XTools wasn't showing the page assessments for some pages, and turns out were all part of this WikiProject MusikAnimal talk 02:29, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal and TheFarix: I've added very basic PageAssessments support to this template. It now records assignment to WikiProject Anime and manga and the class, but it doesn't record importance (since this template doesn't use an importance mask) or information about task forces. Kaldari (talk) 02:34, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Class mask and categorization discussion[edit]

Hello. A class mask for this template has been created and it can be found at Template:WikiProject Anime and manga/class. I've also started a centralized discussion regarding the class categorization, which can be found at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga#Update the schemes for assessment?. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 10:21, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Not adding to categories correctly.[edit]

I just noticed that |needs-infobox= is not adding articles to Category:Anime and manga articles needing infoboxes ( 0 ) nor is |needs-image= is not adding articles to Category:Wikipedia requested images of anime and manga ( 318 ). See Talk:List of Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues episodes for an example, though note that {{Infobox requested}} is adding it to the image req cat even though |needs-image=yes is not. --Nessie (talk) 17:34, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

It's a little late, but these seem to be working as intended. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:58, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Comments related to WPBannerMeta conversion[edit]

Use this section to post issues/comments related to the ongoing {{WPBannerMeta}} conversion. Original discussion is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga § Revisiting the category schemes.

  • Do we need a custom importance mask (in addition to the custom class mask)? I was looking at WP:VG as an example, which has one at Template:WikiProject Video games/importance. — Goszei (talk) 21:18, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
They only have a custom importance mask because they map "no" to "na". The current banner doesn't have any support for this, so don't think it's needed here. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:27, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
I see -- I suppose we don't need the importance mask then. — Goszei (talk) 09:47, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Custom importance masks are quite rare. For the most part, those that do exist either do nothing special (so it's hard to justify their existence) or they add a "bottom" level beneath "low", but there are one or two that add other levels. Template:WikiProject Video games/importance does two non-standard things, not one: besides mapping "no" to "NA", it also forces all pages outside Talk: space to NA - other WikiProjects might set certain non-article pages, such as crucial navboxes, to e.g. Mid-importance, but Video games can't do that. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:55, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Nihonjoe's changes to template seem to have fully taken effect now, but Category:Disambig-Class anime and manga articles and Category:Draft-Class anime and manga articles have failed to populate from the contents of Category:NA-Class anime and manga articles; you can see examples of both at Draft talk:2020 Pretty Cure and Talk:Evangelion. I don't know if this has to be fixed in both the current template and/or the sandbox, so I am pinging you both. — Goszei (talk) 22:46, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
The sandbox version will split them out. The current banner will need modifying if you want to split them now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:27, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
In that case, I think we can wait for the sandbox version. — Goszei (talk) 09:47, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
    I've fixed this. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Should lists be auto-sorted in the "List" category? Currently our project ranks lists as "B", "C", "Start", etc. Is there central guidance for this? I checked some other WikiProjects, which only seem to have one category for featured lists, then one for every other list. — Goszei (talk)
There doesn't seem to be any support for this in the current banner and I'm not sure if it could be supported with WPBannerMeta either unless you split the List class into ListB, ListC and ListStart classes. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:27, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
I think the list quality rankings can be safely deprecated, unless there are objections. Even WikiProject Lists only has "List" and "FL" categories. — Goszei (talk) 09:47, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Most WikiProjects allow only two classes specifically for lists: List-Class and FL-Class. A very small number also allow SL-Class for "stub lists" (see Category:SL-Class plant articles); but I know of only one that offers further graduations - that is Military history, which uses the scale Stub → List → CL → BL → AL → FL (see WP:MHA#SCALE). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:20, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Should we eliminate some of our task forces at this juncture? A good deal of them have been inactive for years. — Goszei (talk) 08:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Below is a list of the taskforces in the current banner. NOTE: There is a bug in the current banner, which means that the studio-ghibli and sailor-moon categories are only added if light-novel-task-force is set to yes. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:31, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

The bug referred to is due to a misplaced pair of closing braces. It should be an easy fix. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:21, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Where is the pair of misplaced braces? Please be very specific. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:45, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
@Redrose64: I think I found it and fixed it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
I wrote "misplaced" not "missing" - your edit was only half the job, and caused extra braces to show in transclusions - this was also necessary. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:20, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Well, sorry. It's very difficult to see the brackets and which ones belong where when using Wikipedia's editor because it doesn't color code the code. I did look at your edit following mine before you posted this. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 07:37, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
Also, I didn't touch the Haruhi part of the template, so that's an artifact left over from some other editing, not mine. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 07:39, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
I never claimed that you did. Perhaps you should consider your edit and mine together, like this - then you will understand why I wrote "misplaced". If the problem really had been caused by a pair of closing braces that were actually missing, it would have been noticed some years ago - the problem concerned dates back more than five years, to this sequence of edits by DragonZero (talk · contribs). A principle of template code is that braces must balance - for each opening triple brace there must be a matching closing triple brace, and for each opening double brace there must be a matching closing double brace. Unmatched braces show up as visible text. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:02, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
I'm very much aware of how bracket pairs work in templates, so please spare me the lecture. My main comment was that it's very difficult to see bracket pairs when practically everything in the entire template has curly brackets used in it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:56, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

The sandbox version should now be complete to review. -- WOSlinker (talk) 11:34, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

@WOSlinker: I removed the collaboration of the week parts as that's not used by this project. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:01, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
I also added icons for those workgroups missing one. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:26, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
I have adjusted the size of a few workgroup icons, to be more consistent. — Goszei (talk) 22:44, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
  • @WOSlinker, Nihonjoe, and Redrose64: Are we now ready to merge the sandbox with the main template, or are there other tasks/reviews to be completed? — Goszei (talk) 22:44, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
I think it should be ready now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:50, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure. I have several questions, such as:
    1. Why are the class and B-Class checklist not passed through for all of the {{WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces}}?
    2. Why do the various entries in the several {{WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces}} use |TF_1_NESTED= etc. when this is not a recognised parameter?
    3. Why are there two different ways of providing parameter aliases - e.g. {{{B1|{{{b1|}}}}}} and {{{mergefrom|}}}{{{mergeto|}}}{{{merge|}}}?
    --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:47, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
    1. Only the Yu-Gi-Oh! work group seems to have a full quality assessment. The other work groups only do a limited assessment. So there was no reason to pass over the B-Class checklist for all the other taskforces.
    2. I just included the TF_1_NESTED when setting up the params against the main hook before copying over to the nested and just left them in as it didn't hurt anything.
    3. No idea. I just copied it from the current banner code.
    -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:25, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
    I did make these fixes. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:57, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
@WOSlinker, Nihonjoe, and Redrose64: Just another check-in, since the last edits were about a month ago. Could one of you use your powers to overwrite the main template with the sandbox? Bug fixing[edit]

Use the following section to list any bugs created by the WPBannerMeta conversion, which was implemented at 18:10 UTC on 17 August 2020, with this revision. — Goszei (talk) 17:27, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

  • Previously, 5 parameters used the ending task-force in their name: hentai-task-force, light-novel-task-force, sailor-moon-task-force, visual-novel-task-force, and studio-ghibli-task-force. In the new template, light-novel-task-force has been changed to end in work-group, which has depopulated the tracking category Category:Light novel work group articles. hentai-task-force has also been changed in the same way, though there is no corresponding category.
I think this can be fixed by simply changing the light-novel and hentai parameter-names to use task-force again, like the other 3 (unchanged) parameters. — Goszei (talk) 17:27, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
I've fixed this. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:38, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
  • There's a typo in this line:
| {{{mergefrom}}} be [[Wikipedia:Merging|merged]] to this{{WikiProject Anime and manga/type check|class={{{class}}}}}
It should have a space:
| {{{mergefrom}}} be [[Wikipedia:Merging|merged]] to this {{WikiProject Anime and manga/type check|class={{{class}}}}}Goszei (talk) 21:52, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
That typo was also in the previous version of the banner as well, and just got copied over. I've updated it now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:57, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Something weird with {{nihongo foot}}[edit]

I'm struggling to understand why, but I noticed a problem with implementing {{nihongo foot}} on Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!. Even though on this diff the code in the lead is {{Nihongo foot|'''''Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!'''''|がくえんゆーとぴあ まなびストレート!|Gakuen Yūtopia Manabi Sutorēto!|{{lit.}} "School Utopia: Manabi Straight"|lead=yes}}, it now treats it as a reference, and doesn't show up in the Notes section that has {{notelist}}, but in the Reference section instead. Can anyone figure out what is going on here?-- 22:17, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

@Juhachi: I fixed it with this diff. On a side note: this is the talk page for the WikiProject banner template. — Goszei (talk) 22:31, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, and I only posted it here because I knew I wouldn't get any replies if I posted it elsewhere (because almost no one have project templates on their watchlist).-- 22:34, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
