Template:Winners[edit]

Hello, I see you have edited on the Winners template page, This is only for national teams, Is their another template or any other way doing it for club teams?

Thanks --Skyblueshaun (talk) 12:52, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea. But club teams don't usually have flags, and team logos are often non-free images, so they couldn't be shown in this context anyway. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:07, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP Olympics returning to the Signpost[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Olympics for a Signpost article in celebration of the 2014 Winter Olympics. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 16:07, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Olympic games medal standings[edit]

Mr. Andrwsc: Your affirmation that a decision of the UN is irrelevant and speculative left me astonished. All the NOC's represented in edition of the Olympic Games bear an official representation of their country. The matter of the couple of sentences that I have added is "specification" and not an "speculation". On the other hand, the table, which was NOT built by myself, as well as the upper one related to Germany show an historical perspective for comparison and are not merely an specualation because they are based in real (already consumed) facts. I would insist in the practical clyrifying function of the added by me sentences and the convinience to keep them. Believe, that is the first time some body in this life tell to me that a decision of the UN nations is irrelevant. Are you should of having enough knowledge's background for editing articles of wikipedia? I understand that for many people this is just a non serious hobby, or for others many basic things could seem obvious, but it is good to leave the content of the articles enough explained for the lecture of general audiences. Yemen at the Olympics[edit]

Admittedly, I haven't done much research on this, but as I'm attempting to slowly bring all the Country at the Olympics articles to a single standard, I'm having a bit of a hard time with Yemen. Does the IOC not combine any pre-1992 Yemeni appearances by North or South Yemen with post-1992 appearances? Theoretically, we'd then need three separate articles, Yemen (which we have), South Yemen (which we have as the 1988 Summer article), and North Yemen, which now redirects to Yemen. So I'm just trying to understand, if this is similar to IOC's view of Germany, of example. Jmj713 (talk) 20:22, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would say that it is indeed similar to the German situation. Prior to unification they competed as separate teams, and also had separate codes (YAR and YMD before, YEM after), which is similar to how the IOC dealt with Germany (FRG and GDR before, GER after). But I also think that the Yemen at the Olympics article could certainly include mention of the 1984 YAR and 1988 YAR&YMD teams; I don't there is a need for additional high-level "____ at the Olympics" articles for South Yemen and North Yemen individually. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:18, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I was thinking, thanks. Also, if you're interested, I've compiled a list on the status of all the Country at the Olympics articles, as I'm slowly working toward improving all of them. Would always appreciate any help. On a related note, I'm seeing some disruptive but likely good-faith edits by Aight 2009, removing historical context from tables, such as with Croatia at the Olympics or Czech Republic at the Olympics. I don't know if you have these on your Watchlist. Jmj713 (talk) 14:22, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

bohemia at olympics[edit]

if you look at for example infobox of poland you will see 1924 as the first year of participation because it was the first time joining to the olympics. poland didn't missed anything because didn't exist or declined to participate in 1920 so olympics before 1924 aren't included. all in all i think that bohemia in 1896 didn't missed anything and its part in olympics started in 1900. it is not misleading to not include 1896 olympics.

In Poland's case, it probably doesn't help to list multiple Games before their first appearance. But in Bohemia's case, there is a single Games that they missed prior to their first appearance, and that is why listed it is helpful. It highlights that they started competing almost from the beginning, except for only the inaugural Games. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:58, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Zimbabwe[edit]

Since the appearances by (Southern) Rhodesia and Zimbabwe should be treated the same as Zaire and DR Congo, I merged Rhodesia at the Olympics and Zimbabwe at the Olympics, but I wasn't sure how to properly correct the infobox flags and such. Could you please correct that as you did with Zaire? Thanks. Jmj713 (talk) 03:01, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What needs to change? Which articles? — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 03:49, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you already took care of it and Zambia, thanks! 14:13, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

I disagree with retroactively applying the ZIM code to a time when Zimbabwe (as a state) did not yet exist. To me, it makes no sense to see the code ZIM being used for articles about Rhodesia's participation in the Games in the 1960s. The IOC treats Rhodesia and Zimbabwe separately. And unlike the Zaire case, the change from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe was not simply a name change. It was a change from one state to another. Aridd (talk) 17:50, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

All 1928, 1960 and 1964 articles (e.g. top level Games articles, sport articles and event articles like Boxing at the 1928 Summer Olympics – Men's welterweight and Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 metres), would still use "RHO". The only article affected are the Rhodesia at the 1928 Summer Olympics etc. articles, which now show the "Zimbabwe at the Olympics" infobox, but with a big Rhodesian flag captioned with "Flag of Southern Rhodesia". — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:36, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's not retroactive and it's showing the code used at the given Games, it fully complies with WP:OLY practices, please take a look here. Jmj713 (talk) 19:39, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It still seems odd to me to have the "Zimbabwe" infobox on the Rhodesia pages, with the clearly anachronistic ZIM code. Surely it creates confusion rather than clarity. But well; we'll see if anyone else has a view on the topic. Aridd (talk) 08:16, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Countries change their IOC codes all the time, and this should be noted on the appropriate article with the "oldcode" function. Like HOL and NED, for example. Jmj713 (talk) 14:42, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sailing at the Olympics[edit]

Hi Andrwsc,

About four year ago in April 2010 I started to work the articles on Sailing (in the wide since of the word) at the Summer Olympics. At that moment and during the process you had good pointers and advice for me to improve the articles. Sometimes we disagreed but made the outcome always better regardless who won:-) the debate. Now April 2014 I think I have got touched all of the pages (with the exception of the results of the 2000 Olympics) at least with one large edit. Now I'm about to start the next cycle starting with 1900 and finishing wit the overall title Sailing at the Olympics. My goals of this cycle are:

  • to bring the pages minimal to the same "standard" as 1972 and it's sub pages,
  • To create/upgrade the surrounding articles like those of the scoring systems of sailing throughout the years and when relevant the Olympic classes
  • To got rid of most "Red" links in the pages
  • To make the articles more illustrated where relevant of needed to "promote" the Olympic sailing
  • To got the articles graded by the sailing project

Hopefully you will be there to support this second cycle as well.

If you agree that the quality and depth of these articles is improved in the first cycle you can take 50% of the credits;-).

Regards, NED33 _/) talk 17:35, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am not very active on Wikipedia any more, so I would suggest asking at WT:WikiProject Olympics instead. I do not want any "credit". My only suggestions for now would be:
  1. There is no reason to invent specific templates for these pages (e.g. {{Infobox Olympic Sailing}} and {{Improve Olympic Sailing Article}}) instead of using the standard ones.
  2. It is excessive to include a cumulative medal table on every "Sailing at the year Olympics" page. No other sport page does this.
  3. I do not think you will get much consensus for including a "top ranked countries" section in the infobox. The complete medal table within the article is fully sufficient and does not need to be trimmed for the infobox.
  4. You tend to use icons excessively, often in violaton of WP:Manual of Style/Icons. For example, there is no reason to use the and symbols instead of writing "men" and "women" in text. You also use the sail emblem images as icons freely in these articles, which I find far more distracting than the name of the event.
Hope this feedback is useful. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:41, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you for creating Polo at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Would you please consider adding inlined references? Also, I have created Jean Pastré, but the reference I found for the match listed other players--I am not sure if I misunderstood the source or if there were several matches with different players (could have been the case). Ideally, I think all the players who competed in the Olympics should have their own pages, this being such an incredible achievement...Zigzig20s (talk) 20:08, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(do not need Template:Country data placeholder. An empty parameter list to {{flagicon}} does what you want.)

For the sake of any future users of the template (and as a future reminder), I thought a placeholder image, not nothing, would be more helpful. I compiled "Country data placeholder" rather than this, however, as this situation seems possible elsewhere.

Yours, Sardanaphalus (talk) 17:49, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We've had discussions in the past against the use of placeholder images (e.g. Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2013 May 8#Template:Country data Unknown) so I think that the missing flag icon ought to appear only in the template documentation and never in a mainspace article. I think your use of <noinclude> in the Alleged War on Terror militants of country meta-template handles this perfectly. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:12, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nashville flag[edit]

Hi Andrwsc. I was wondering why this flag is allowed on the article Nashville, Tennessee but not on Nashville mayoral election, 2015 when the licensing says that it qualifies as fair use? Thanks, Tiller54 (talk) 23:16, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The fair-use policy is applicable here. Using the image on the Flag of Nashville, Tennessee article and the Nashville, Tennessee article is supported by appropriate non-free media rationale statements on the image description page (e.g. "Used for purposes of illustration in an educational article about the flag. The image is used as the primary means of visual identification of this article topic."). There is no fair-use rationale for any other article, nor would it be appropriate to add more FURs to the image description page. On the Nashville mayoral election, 2015 article, the flag image would be merely decorative—especially when displayed as a small icon in the infobox without any caption or article text describing it. That style of image usage also does not meet criteria #8 ("Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding.") — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:02, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1930 All-Ireland Empire Games flag[edit]

Can you change the flag used for the island of Ireland on the {{FlagCGF|IRE}} template from the green harp Ireland to blue ?

I believe the flag they used for the 1930 Games was the 1542 blue harp Standard, then used on the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom, not the green harp flag. The citations on the Ireland at the British Empire Games article do not contradict this information; the photo gallery link shows the bust on the harp (third flag from right), page 14 of the publication says the harp was 'on a blue (or possibly green) background'. Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, Andrwsc. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to the African Destubathon[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Andrwsc.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Andrwsc. I noticed that you deleted {{Country data JP}} and {{Country data RU}} back in 2009. Flag of Malawi[edit]

Hi Andrwsc - I've just come across a problem on 2010 ICC World Cricket League Africa Region Division Two. Back in 2010, when the flag of Malawi changed (before it changed back again) you added a '1964' qualifier. However the underlying country data ({{Country data Malawi}}) doesn't support this, so the display is broken. Do you think it would be better to add the parameter to the country data, or just to remove it from the article? Are you aware of any other pages that may use this '1964' parameter (or perhaps a 2010 or 2012 variant)? If it's just the one page, I can simply remove it. Colonies Chris (talk) 09:47, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

According to edit the 1964 flag is the same as the current flag, so if an unavailable variant is used with the flag templates, it defaults to the current flag. Therefore, the "|1964" markup is unnecessary and has no effect, but the correct flag is used anyway. You can certainly remove the useless markup from that article, but nothing is broken. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:23, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template[edit]

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to respond to an edit request at Template talk:Country data Eswatini#Template-protected edit request on 1 November 2018 I went to consult the documentation and I see that Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template#Template documentation includes a blank pre-/pre section since you added it in 2007. Is there an omission? Cabayi (talk) 12:50, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity[edit]

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
