For the purposes of editing restrictions in the ARBPIA topic area, the "area of conflict" shall be defined as encompassing

500/30 Rule: All IP editors, users with fewer than 500 edits, and users with less than 30 days' tenure are prohibited from editing content within the area of conflict. On primary articles, this prohibition is preferably to be enforced by use of extended confirmed protection (ECP) but this is not mandatory. On pages with related content, or on primary articles where ECP is not feasible, the 500/30 Rule may be enforced by other methods, including page protection, reverts, blocks, the use of pending changes, and appropriate edit filters. Reverts made solely to enforce the 500/30 Rule are not considered edit warring.

The sole exceptions to this prohibition are:

1. Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may use the Talk: namespace to post constructive comments and make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided they are not disruptive. Talk pages where disruption occurs may be managed by any of the methods noted in paragraph b). This exception does not apply to other internal project discussions such as AfDs, WikiProjects, RfCs, noticeboard discussions, etc.

2. Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may not create new articles, but administrators may exercise discretion when deciding how to enforce this remedy on article creations. Deletion of new articles created by editors who do not meet the criteria is permitted but not required.

3. One Revert Restriction (1RR): Each editor is limited to one revert per page per 24 hours on any edits made to content within the area of conflict. Reverts made to enforce the 500/30 Rule are exempt from the provisions of this motion. Also, the normal exemptions apply. Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked by any uninvolved administrator.

Note that this means your edits on such pages (which you aren't yet eligible to make) may be reverted by anyone at any time. These restrictions are stricter than those in most other areas because of the problems that we've had in this area. Doug Weller talk 12:24, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm not sure how to start writing a wiki and save it without publishing it. I've just been accessing a sandbox and copy/pasting the code in a word doc to save my work that way. Hi @Pbsouthwood. Is usage of a redirected term always an improvement? I'm not sure... this is an uncommon synonym which I could find used in only one academic source [1], but a synonym nonetheless. In that case you could say something like "also occasionally term B^[1]", so that a person redirected to that page knows it is legitimate, otherwise they have to check for themselves. Hi @Deiadameian, the definition of defining I'm going by is the one on WP:DEFINING: A defining characteristic is one that reliable sources commonly and consistently refer to in describing the topic. This is because such thing would be a spoiler, and the majority of sources you'll look for will avoid spoilers. It is thus skipped not due to its insignificance but rather as a service to the audience and the filmmakers. Spoiler articles on the other hand (which won't be as many, and they won't be the prioritized ones due to their nature) would mention it. The article for the book does contain the category (and it was not me who added it) and the same thing applies to the book as well. I believe the category should be restored for the the reasons I gave above: it is the most defining element (it is in fact the subject of the very title), the book's article has it, and its omission in spoiler-free sources is not due to non-notability but rather marketing.

No, mentioning that plot element isn’t the same as it being a defining characteristic of the film. Some other examples: “Terminator is a sci-fi film about a robot that travels back in time” (defining categories would be sci-fi movies, time-travel movies, robot movies); “Clue is a murder mystery film based on a board game” (defining categories would be murder mystery movies, movies based on board games). These are defining characteristics that are commonly and consistently used to describe the subject. Inappropriate categories would be “movies featuring sharp metal objects” and “movies with characters dressed as French maids” respectively. Both would be true and verifiable, but not defining.

I don’t believe sources would ever say “Death on the Nile is a film about a man who murders his wife”, even if they paid no heed to spoilers. Listen, I am talking about facts, not hypothetical scenarios. I gave you an example and you dismissed it without reason and then ignored my other points because you stick too much to one rule's specific wording, saying that the sources (the ones that you are willing to accept, because you dismiss the ones that don't fit) do not contain spoilers. I am not going to argue any further because there is no merit. But if you think that the very central theme of a work is not a defining characteristic because spoiler-avoiding brief descriptions would not mention it, then I just disagree. Hi. I looked at your article Draft:Lo La. Artists and their friends, family and agents will sometimes come to Wikipedia and create an article whose main purpose is to aggrandize, promote or sell their subject. Wikipedia editors are quite sensitive to this, especially for minor, lesser-known and upcoming artists, even if self-promotion was not the intention of the article's contributors.

For the avoidance of doubt, could you confirm whether you are affiliated with the subject? Even if you are, that doesn't mean you can't write this article, it just means you would need to disclose a conflict of interest, then go above and beyond to make your article fastidiously neutral.

If we take a look at the Lo La article as it currently stands:

• known for her unique blend. I couldn't see this phrase supported by a source, so it comes across as promotional. Known by who?
• passion for music was evident from a young age. The source doesn't say this explicitly, so it comes across as your opinion rather than factual.
• topped the charts in Indonesia. Charts plural? The source only mentions one chart (singular), and it's not the Billboard Indonesia Top 100, so this comes across as misleading.
• She has been an advocate for mental health awareness. I couldn't find anything in this paragraph's source to support this. Even if it's true, it still has to be significant (being an advocate could mean almost anything).
• known for her creative and artistic persona. This is not evident from the source and comes across as your opinion. See also MOS:PUFFERY and "weasel words".

In general, the sources seem borderline in terms of their reliability (many are blogs), and it's unclear to me whether the subject is notable. Have a look at WP:ARTIST and see if any of the notability criteria apply. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 14:06, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

• Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.

See WP:OS and WP:EMERGENCY for details. If you're regularly patrolling recent changes, you will need both contacts sooner or later, and you'll be happy about the bookmarks.
• Use common sense.

To try rollback for the first time, you may like to make an edit to WP:Sandbox, and another one, and another one, and then revert the row with one click. Hi again, I want to add Sam Sameja as an Australian artist and create a wikipedia page too.

The content that I have is below:

Sam Sameja also known as Fazlul Karim Sameja (born 15 June 1939) is a Tanzanian born Australian artist.

Sameja was born on the small island of Pemba, Tanganyika (now Tanzania). His grandparents had migrated from India to Africa in the 1890s. Sameja spent his childhood growing up in British ruled Zanzibar, the larger more well-known island of the region often referred to as the “Spice Islands”.

After secondary school, he secured a scholarship to study Fine Arts at the Institute of Surikov in Moscow in 1959. He spent at least 6 years in the USSR including living in Georgia for a period of time learning the language.

After Sameja left the USSR, he travelled across Europe in search for another art scholarship although his attempts were unsuccessful. He then briefly headed back to East Africa where there was much conflict. It was not safe for him to stay so he made his way to London and eventually was granted the status of a political refugee.

It was in London where he met his Australian (British born) wife and in the 1970s they immigrated to Western Australia.

This is where most of Sameja's paintings were created with various mediums including oil and acrylic on canvas and board.

His works can be categorized into surrealism and abstract. In his earlier years, his paintings featured prominent public figures or an event. In his later years, he concentrated on colour and design with his ideas often coming directly his dreamworld.

Copyright is complicated. Every work has a copyright in various countries and is subject to different terms. For example, the copyright of the original diary of Anne Frank expired in The Netherlands. But in the US it's still copyrighted and should expire in 2043.
As the WMF is based in the US only the copyright status in the US legally matters. English Wikipedia adopted this and accepts files that are PD-USonly. Commons has a different policy: on paper works have to be public domain in both the US and the country of origin. In practice, the requirement to be PD in the US is forgotten/ignored on a regular basis. This occasionally results in a DMCA takedown request. There are also files on Commons that are public domain in the country of origin and under copyright in the US, but WMF legal ignores them as they may be covered by fair use law. Cool, eh?
It's unrealistic to determine for any work whether it's public domain worldwide. At some point I figured out that even cave paintings could theoretically be protected by copyright in some places under specific circumstances. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:58, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And completely forgot to answer your other questions. Wikimedia Commons is better if the work is also PD in the country of origin, otherwise it'll violate their policy. Wikisource is a free library, I don't think they do video, but English Wikisource does allow PD-USonly: s:en:File:Prague Triumphant.jpg. Archive.org does indeed host various PD feature films but we can't embed those, we can't edit file descriptions etc (archive.org is not a wiki) and whether streaming video works better on Wikimedia or archive.org probably depends on your device. 1. You'll find guidance on the process of publishing an article here: Wikipedia:Articles for creation. You should be able to copy and paste the text you have already written into the new article. When you submit the draft for review, you'll get feedback. One thing that stood out to me when I looked at the draft briefly is that you're using the Azerbaijani Wikipedia as a source. We have an essay about this: Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a reliable source. More generally, there is guidance on what counts as a reliable source: Wikipedia:Reliable sources. It is common for first drafts of new articles to be rejected for notability or sourcing reasons.

2. Help:Pictures explains how images can be added, but I'm not quite sure if an image is what you want - are you perhaps thinking of an infobox? Help:Infobox

3. This is the English Wikipedia. Each language has its own Wikipedia, with its own community and guidelines. If you wanted to create an article about this person on, say, the Azerbaijani Wikipedia, you'd need to create an account on [2] and go from there. I was not sure about the wikipedia references as well so I removed them after your comment. And yes, what I meant was a picture for the infobox. I drafted an infobox content for now and I plan to add an image later. I suppose I can use my own photo by uploading it to wikimedia commons.

The main piece of feedback you have received is that the article reads like an advertisement. And that's probably because it is, right? Its overall tone is self-promotional. Things like:

• Including the agent in the infobox.
• "Later to win multiple more awards" - which ones?
• The review from ukfilmreview.co.uk, which appears to be a pay-for-publicity site.
• His books published through Blurb - another self-publishing outlet.
• The lead which mentions Game of Thrones prominently, but for some reason he was uncredited?

It looks like the COI tag on that page relates to edits by a previous user who made a lot of edits in a pattern that makes it look like they may have had a conflict of interest. I’m not sure that issue is wholly resolved, because the sourcing is still extremely thin. I’m not sure this would pass our notability guidelines, particularly the guidelines for when an artist is notable. For a new article, the first and most important thing to check is the notability guidelines: Wikipedia:Notability. I think this subject would also fall under the notability guidance for artists: WP:NARTIST. I haven’t done an in-depth analysis, but my first impression was that many of the sources are passing references to Koch rather than in-depth coverage. Which would you say are the 2-3 best sources that provide the most significant coverage of Koch himself? These are the ones that would prove notability. Also, some sources may not be independent (e.g. anything published on an official Weezer site may count as a self-published source - WP:SPS). Proving notability has been one of my main focuses over the course of creating the page. I do believe that the individual is, at best, on the fringes of what Wikipedia deems notable. He is factually important to the development and popularity of the band and he is often mentioned or contacted to provide information in reliable articles/books on the band, however significant coverage is more difficult to find. Nonetheless, I have submitted the draft because I feel as though I have been able to build a case for notability with a handful of solid sources. Upon submitting it, I wrote a brief entry on the draft's talk page explaining my rationale and providing some context. A condensed list of important sources is available there.

Re: WP:SPS, there are numerous citations on the page which I would agree are self-published or otherwise primary sources—including interviews with Koch and links to his personal website. These sources are used mostly to confirm biographical claims about Koch, indicate the existence of his own musical releases, or to provide sources for quotes from Weezer band members. In some cases though, arguable self-published sourced are the sole evidence for certain factual claims (e.g., "In 2014, the official Weezer Fan Club was revived by Koch and a fan named Lisa..."). I worked under the impression that, given notability has been proven by a sufficient number of solid sources, certain relevant claims could be included and proven using sources that wouldn't be deemed reliable/independent. However I may be wrong in this assumption! Please advise.

Re: Conflict of Interest, the Weezerpedia wiki is official in that it has been included on the official band website as a social media link and it is paid for/hosted by Koch (since 2014). However, admins and editors are not paid, personally selected, vetted, nor affiliated with Koch or the band. And, although I do occasionally communicate with Koch, neither he nor the band have suggested or requested the creation of the article. I became interested in authoring the page because I am a fan of Koch's work and I feel as though he is sufficiently notable for Wikipedia. I hope this clears it up!

Limited use of self-published sources can be OK within the rules on WP:ABOUTSELF. Personally, I'm convinced by the sources you've highlighted on the talk page that notability is achieved. The Chicago Tribune article from 2001 is probably the best. I asked for the text of the deleted version of this article to be recovered, and have placed it here: User:Barnards.tar.gz/Karl Koch (musician). I was curious to see whether it had any usable material for the new article. I'm not sure it does. I also wondered whether it included that Chicago Tribune article. Dear mentor I have a question. Recently I have been not edit waring but rather having an edit skirmish with a non registered user that doesn’t provide any sources to their statements and I would like to ask is it possible to have a page at least be temporarily be locked for non registered users? It’s also a page that has been reviewed as a good page and I would hate for this page, as it’s a topic I am really interested in to loose said status. Such locking is possible, in cases of serious disruption. If you are talking about the edits to Cambodian–Vietnamese War, then it seems to have died down with the text that you want in place? However, I notice that at one point you added a source which is unlikely to be suitable to support a statement in the infobox (seems to be a primary source). Infoboxes are for at-a-glance summaries of uncontroversial information that doesn't need a great deal of nuance or context to understand.

You might like to read Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, which is a common method of resolving disputes. Since your change was reverted, rather than continue to un-revert (which, as you've observed, usually makes for an unproductive edit war), a sensible next step would be to open a discussion on the talk page and explain why the content should be added. You can give your reasoning, and any opposing editors can give theirs. Hopefully you would arrive at a consensus, but if not then there are further options for dispute resolution. Good to get some extra help & insight to what & how things work on Wikipedia--thank you! I have done ! edit. It is an add-on last paragraph to The Nest, under the Plot category. The Nest is a Jude Law movie. I had just seen the movie and felt that the ending while subject to different interpretations, deserved a little more input on the page. Would you go to that listing & look over my addition of what is now the last paragraph under Plot?
