Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Tiger into Tiger conservation. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. Your reversion of my edit to "Giraffe"[edit]

Greetings and felicitations. I noticed that you reverted my edit to the article "Giraffe". I made the changes to the article because to me it looks like (large image:) this, and the galleries are, in my mind, the best way to solve this. Would you please be so kind as to undo your reversion? —DocWatson42 (talk) 04:08, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DocWatson42, I can't view the link. And the gallery style clashes with how the images are organized in the rest of the article. LittleJerry (talk) 16:38, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry that the image cannot be viewed using that link. Try this one. —DocWatson42 (talk) 07:45, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see, perhaps we should remove some images. LittleJerry (talk) 16:35, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Elizium23. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Alex Jones, but you didn't provide a reliable source. Notice

The article Cat nutrition has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Appears to be a copy-paste of a section from the Wikipedia article on cats - which would make it an unneccesary fork. Was flagged by copypatrol, listing a mirror(?) of the aforementioned Wikipedia page onto another site.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Reverting[edit]

When you are reverting someone's edit, please explain in the edit summary why you reverted the edit. An edit summary like no thanks is unhelpful and it may lead other users to question your actions. Thank you, Interstellarity (talk) 20:29, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:13, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wolf[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Wolf has been completed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

In the Etymology section the article says: "The English "wolf" stems from the Old English wulf, which is itself thought to be derived from the Proto-Germanic *wulfaz ... Old English literature contains several instances of Anglo-Saxon kings and warriors taking on wulf as a prefix or suffix in their names." Examples include Wulfhere ("Wolf Army"), Cynewulf ("Royal Wolf") etc ...".

These are not examples of actual names. I wonder of you should actually provide some examples Cynewulf a poet, and Wulfhere of Mercia a king. And then say "English wolf related names include: Wulfhere ("Wolf Army"), Cynewulf ("Royal Wolf") etc ...".

Just a thought.

Best of luck with the FA process when you get to it.

It is hard to get a featured article about a hurricane or a road. Harder still to get a featured article about a historical figure or niche topic not popular among FAC reviewers.

But to get an article like wolf up to WP:FA is the most difficult thing any of us can do here, especially when it was previously demoted. Koala[edit]

There are supposed to be NO cites in the lead paragraphs, okay? LittleJerry (talk) 22:47, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:LEAD states As a general rule of thumb, a lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs and be carefully sourced as appropriate. This seems to contradict your position on refs/sources. Whilst I agree about not including refs in the usual short lead that you see on most articles, when the lead becomes a mini article like this then I think including refs is entirely appropriate. Maybe the lead to this article needs to be trimmed and the content here moved into the body of the article. Nick Thorne talk 00:02, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sourced when approved = quotations. The lead is supposed to summarize the body which is already cited. LittleJerry (talk) 00:07, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you meant appropriate, rather than approved. No matter. I'm not going to pursue this, I really feel the article could use a bit of a rewrite, especially the lead, but I don't have the time or the energy for that at the moment. Have a nice day! - Nick Thorne talk 01:29, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Koala again[edit]

With this edit you again removed the words inaccurate and miscalled, moving the article away from the long term status quo. In addition, you made the following edit summary another user removed this too so the consensus is now against you. This is patently ridiculous, two editors don't make any sort of a consensus, never mind that we now have two editors on both sides of the argument. If you really wish to establish a consensus, take it to the article talk page. I will consider further reversion to be disruption and shall act accordingly. - Nick Thorne talk 11:57, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Scorpion lead image[edit]

The female emperor scorpion is highly atypical of the group, so I'd oppose it as the lead image. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:39, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Seems we need a high-res horizontal image... sigh. On another matter, we've been asked to use Stockmann & Ythier, which is available at Zlibrary. Unfortunately the reviewer has immediately opposed; I've made quite a few fixes, and perhaps we can bring them round. The claims about numbers of species will need to be worked on carefully before we reply to that item; basically they now all need to be checked, maybe from that book. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:37, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Chiswick Chap, I downloaded the book and it seems to be mostly a guidebook for beginners. I don't know what we could use it for. As for the image, if thats the best one we can find then are don't see the need for a change. LittleJerry (talk) 18:51, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's all "sayable"; or they can ask for a specific image from Commons if they have one in mind. I'd not have thought it worthwhile arguing much with the reviewers, however, even if they're more or less wrong; it's usually possible to do something to keep them happy (e.g. put in a few refs to the book for the sake of harmony). The Stockmann & Ythier distribution map is a lot better than what we have at the moment - if you ask me nicely I might do some graphics! Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:12, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then. I could add in more bits of information on resistance to radiation and a few other things. I'm not good with the taxonomy stuff. LittleJerry (talk) 19:16, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've added all the families from the Scorpion Files; they're more up to date than I thought, parts are from 2020 so no worries there. And the map we have is not unlike Lourenco's, so I shall leave it alone for now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:12, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zebra scheduled for TFA[edit]

This is to let you know that the Zebra article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 31, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 31, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

Done. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:09, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with a phrase like 'cultural significance' is that if taken narrowly, "culture" means just the arts, while if it's taken broadly as Culture, it includes use as food and pets and much else; and both those senses are a poor fit for the section right now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:07, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jupiter[edit]

Dear Litte Jerry, It’s a pity that you have deleted my contribution of today concerning the new corrected figures of the Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism on Jupiter. If you disagree with these new facts, you must give sounded arguments I’m interested in.

Best regards,

Christophe1946--21:45, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Christophe1946 (talk)

You did not format your sourcing correctly. LittleJerry (talk) 00:52, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll correct the two sources. Christophe1946--09:33, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Christophe1946 (talk)

It's done. I hope it's now OK !Christophe1946 (talk) 10:08, 5 January 2021 (UTC)--Christophe1946 (talk) 10:08, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand your scepticism concerning the shrinking of Jupiter of only 1 mm/yr by the Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism. You can read the book by Patrick Irwin. On page 4 of its second edition (2009) it is clearly given 1 mm/yr and not 2 cm/year. From where is coming this last wrong figure, I don't know.

His value of 1 mm is corroborated by the paper by Liming Li et al. of 2018 giving an experimental flux of internal heat of 7.485 W/m^2 as measured on place by the Cassini probe. This correct reference to this paper is already given as n° 12, attesting the new figure, in the box, for the Bond albedo of 0.503 !

You can easy calculate yourself the effect and can get the observed figure of 1 mm/yr related to 7.5 W/m^2 with the derivative with respect to t of the formula giving the total gravitational energy of Jupiter (see here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelvin%E2%80%93Helmholtz_mechanism) :

U = (3/10)G M^2/R = 1.03 10^36 J,

i.e. dU/dt = -(3/10)G M^2/R^2 dR/dt = -1.46 10^28 dR/dt.

Introducing dR/dt = -1 mm/yr = -0.001 m/yr = -3.17 10^-11 m/s, you get dU/dt = 4.64 10^17 W.

Dividing by the whole area of Jupiter 6.14 10^16 m^2 you get 7.55 W/m^2.

Are you now convinced ?

If you introduce 2 cm/yr instead of 1 mm/yr, you'll get 150 W/m^2, clearly a much too high figure.

Please, I ask you to restore my paragraph !

Thank you in advance and with my kind regards,

Hi LittleJerry

I have volunteered to copy edit Jupiter. I intend to be fairly bold about it. I shall also likely flag up a list of queries on the article's talk page. Feel free to come back at me on anything you are not happy with. Let's see if we can save the big J.

Hi again LittleJerry
I am really sorry, but it doesn't look as if I will get round to this one. Apologies again, but I am standing back from Jupiter.

A bit off topic for WP...[edit]

I saw this article today, [1] and was saddened and disturbed. It seems unusual to me (not that I am an expert) that a young male would kill a female, even an older one. Male jaguars killing females in the wild, doesn't make good evolutionary sense. But both jaguars were in captivity, so the dynamics were different, I suppose. Do you have any insight or opinions to share? Thanks for your time and consideration. Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 04:13, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

LittleJerry I agree wholeheartedly. What on earth gave you the impression that I wished to include this information in the Jaguar article? I have reread my initial post several times...I never mentioned including this solitary incident in our encyclopedia article. That's why I headed the section as "off topic". I merely wished to ask for your insight or opinions, as an animal expert, concerning a troubling incident. It was a private question, from a minor editor to an editor with more in-depth understanding. I do apologize for troubling you, but I am baffled as to why you thought I wished to include this information. Please explain.Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 02:44, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Blue Whale Copy Edit[edit]

Hello:

I've now completed the copy edit of the Blue whale article you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors.

I have added two "clarification needed" tags to what appear to be two bits of stray text in the Lifespan and Swim speed sections. Otherwise I think with the work you did on it the article is in good shape. I think it makes logical sense to discuss each population separately so I have not made changes there. I think there is a discrepancy in the date hunting Blue whales was banned. In the Historic threats section it says 1966, uncited, and in the Population section it says 1967, which does not appear (that I could see) in the given citation. The current population estimate would be a helpful addition, as the 10,000 to 25,000 estimate is from 2008.

Congratulations on getting Beaver to FA status. That was quite a journey.

Thanks for getting involved! I think its's high time to bring this page into shape for GAN.
