Pinging people[edit]

Hi DoB. In general, you don't need to (and probably shouldn't) ping people who you know are going to be watching a [WikiProject] talk page anyway. Pings are for pages that they might not be watching, talk:Wendover, for example. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 08:26, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No problems JMF. I'll bear that in mind regards DoB DragonofBatley (talk) 08:48, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wendover[edit]

Hey! I wouldn't worry too much about Wendover. The sources do strongly suggest that it should be referred to as a town, but by opening the discussion you've drawn our attention to the fact it's sometimes called a village and therefore made the article better. Good job, A.D.Hope (talk) 12:13, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks A. D. Hope, no worries. Just saw so much inconcicent status like town and village but yeah. It's fine, also glad Great Missenden isn't being reverted to a town since it's a village and even Eopsid and others checked out the status with zero results. DragonofBatley (talk) 12:27, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's all about what the sources say. You'd think that if a settlement of 7,400 was a town then a neighbouring settlement of over 10,000 would be a town too, but nope! A.D.Hope (talk) 12:30, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You couldn't just wait longer than 18 minutes?[edit]

Where cited content has existed for some years, you really should raise issues at Talk before making wholesale deletions. 82.13.47.210 (talk) 20:05, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

York City Centre[edit]

If you'd like to help me, I'm starting on an article for York City Centre in my sandbox if you'd like to help gather refs and see what else would be good to add, you could add or make a note for me to do stuff if you can't be bothered to do complex specific things. I'd very much like to go straight from sandbox, through draft to active article than wait months for an article that won't even get through from draft. I am going through adding content, fixing links, adding refs and if I get bored doing my favourite bit of adding pictures.

If they are any other YCC drafts out there please point it out. Chocolateediter (talk) 15:53, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chocolateediter thanks for your message. You could work off a template from the Lincoln City Centre article and use the sub headings for say a starting template. I might be able to help dig some information out. You got other city centre plans? I'm wondering if Bradford, Wakefield, Derby and Durham could warrant city centre articles? DragonofBatley (talk) 16:00, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going through city centre articles and cherry picking the bits I can replicate and adapt for York, looking at Manchester CC at the mo.
Durham centre might be a bit small but I can contribute quite a bit if you can work out how to stretch it. Durham and York are easy for me having visited many times and I recently walked the river peninsula in Durham and York walls so it's given me a fresh view of the those centres.
I have to do researching for Bradford (a city that size it's surprising that it doesn't already, Leeds gets all the limelight), Wakefield and Derby. Carlisle might be a good one, haven't visited there either. I've visited Lincoln once so might be able to contribute a bit to your new article. They is a kind of check list on settlements; big church, castle, other fortifications, market, newer big shop area, older indy shop area, buildings around a body of water, centre gardens, etc. I don't tend to like indoor chain shop shopping centres, I wouldn't mention them in any major way.
The YouTuber called Let's Walk is quite good at giving you the jist for a city centre, pointing out some things to look up and add. They is an article listing city centre articles with red links for ones that don't have them, keep forgetting which one it is and it is really annoying I'll bookmark it next time I see it or I already have I just forgot because it has a random name that isn't city centre specific.
Would you say the way I divided York centre fair I tried to do by river, castle with squares, Minster with Uni and Bootham with museum gardens; a kind of in wall then out wall for each because York centre definitely spans out in a grey area around the walls. Never noticed how many people live inside the walled area. Chocolateediter (talk) 17:16, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll have a peek later bud, I'm definitely for seeing Durham etc have a possible city centre article at a later time. I'll do some looking at your sandbox and see what could be likely contributed? Use my created article too just to give yourself a slight idea of how it could be layed out and then once it's up to stub standard. Then expand more on it. Future plans[edit]

Gonna start working on some new railway station articles and might update a few from West Yorkshire/Lincolnshire/East Midlands/Lancs/Wales wherever. Quite a few stations still missing especially a few on active lines or electric railways. Feel free to chip into this discussion of any suggestions I could look to make for articles missing for closed railway stations/tram stations. Reference template for listed buildings[edit]

Hello @DragonofBatley:
Thank you for adding a reference to the Historic England listing for the Church of Saint Pancras, Widecombe-in-the-Moor. I saw that you used the cite web template:

{{Cite web |title=CHURCH OF ST PANCRAS, Widecombe in the Moor - 1242571 {{!}} Historic England |url=https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1242571 |access-date=2023-08-18 |website=historicengland.org.uk |language=en}}

The best way to cite a Historic England listing is to use template:NHLE. The great advantage of this method is that it allows you to add the grade (which obviously template:cite web does not). This is what it should look like:

{{NHLE |num= 1242571 |desc= Church of St Pancras |grade= I |access-date= 2023-08-18}}

I have made the change for you at Church of Saint Pancras, Widecombe-in-the-Moor, so that you can see how this looks in the reference list. Could I request please that, in future, you use the template for consistency across UK settlement and building articles? If you come across any references to the Historic England website that use Template:cite web, please convert them to Template:NHLE.
Thanks and best wishes Mertbiol (talk) 12:05, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Hi @DragonofBatley. Thanks for notifying me of the your City of Preston merge proposal. Although I disagree with the proposal, it's fair to question and seek opinion on whether Preston is best served by having both articles. Rupples (talk) 14:47, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

finds.org.uk[edit]

Hi @DragonofBatley: I thought you might be interested to know about the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). I have been using the website for a couple of years now (in conjunction with the relevant resources on Commons to add photos of archaeological finds to Wikipedia settlement articles. I wondered if you might be interested in doing the same? Here are some examples of images that I’ve used (click on the bold links to see them being used in articlespace):

As you can see, some of these images are spectacular and they really do enhance some of our shorter settlement articles. Finding the images is easy - just go to the Advanced Search on the PAS website and you can use the drop down menus to choose the county, borough/district and civil parish. (Note that some places don't have any finds yet, but most will have more than one image, so you need to choose the best.) Most of the images are already on Commons (although that varies from county to county) - you just need to search for the record number.
I thought perhaps on your travels though Wikipedia, you might be able to spot settlement articles that might benefit from Portable Antiquities Scheme images and then add them? You should include a reference - for example for the arrowhead from the Isle of Wight above, I used:

{{cite web |url= https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/453951 |title= Finds record for: IOW-EF8E93 |author= Basford, F |access-date= 29 August 2022 |publisher= The Portable Antiquities Scheme}}

I'd be more than happy to give you some feedback if you wanted to give a couple of these a go.
Best wishes Mertbiol (talk) 18:36, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A-class[edit]

Hi, I noticed you tagged an article (Lincoln City Centre) under A-class, which tbh is quite rare, which I why I noticed it. Per WP:ACLASS and Wikipedia:Content assessment#FAQ, this rating has to undergo a formal proposal process supported by at least two uninvolved editors. Please propose it if you believe it meets A-class criteria, although many projects rarely use A-class, with UKGEO having no A-class articles. You can self-assess to B-class if you believe it meets it. Thanks for the work on the article, nonetheless.

Also confused with your edits at Bala Lake Railway? Although good faith! Thanks! DankJae 12:54, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Blackpool Topic[edit]

I noted the total reversion and the recruitment of other editors.

You are certainly entitled to do this.

To be perfectly candid - there are many, many other editors who might also have opinions - not just the old guard.

WP is actually a global encyclopedia, matters were actually discussed - see talk sections - personally, and I hope objectively, I did find it a tremendously bloated article but have little enthusiasm to further refine the article - I do think invoking WP:MOS and also likely being more surgical in your total reverts - it is tremendously verbose, bloated, and in parts totally incoherent - lots of agenda edits.

Consider the audience - consider the structure - consider other editors opinions. See the talk section - see the conversations - I think you are simply late to the dance and for that I do apologize.

It is not a major passion of mine - so I am okay leaving the article as it was before several editors made constructive other changes - which it seems you feel are also a 'hash'.

Cheers. BeingObjective (talk) 16:51, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Scroll of the Dragon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Scroll of the Dragon moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Scroll of the Dragon, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Brighton and Hove[edit]

Hi there, I see your comment on the Hove talk page and I totally agree with what you are saying regarding Brighton and Hove, Hove is an area of the city as is Brighton. Both pages need changing. The short description describes Brighton as a seaside resort. Do you think this should be changed to city I feel it should be. Unfortunately I got a bit carried away when editing as I feel quite passionate about this and it led me to get a ban for a while which was a bit harsh so I’d like to get other peoples views to maybe get the support to make things right. 78.86.134.131 (talk) 11:31, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is it notable? I'm intrigued by the fact that " It is more commonly known for being the site of the Lincoln Tank Memorial ..." but the 3 sites I've looked at about the tank memorial don't mention it (this, this and this). Ordnance survey calls it a "suburban area", but no-one else except estate agents seems to use the term at all ... except for the Primitive Methodists who seem to have had a chapel there from 1901 to 1963. If it weren't for that, I might have taken the article to AfD. Of the various sources, none but the OS actually mention New Boultham. Can you find and add some sources which show people writing about the area by that name? If not, should the article be merged into Boultham?

An article about the tank memorial might be worthwhile? There seem to be quite a few sources including Historic England and the laser-cutting firm. PamD 19:53, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why keep linking to disambiguation pages?[edit]

Hallo, You've been told about the really helpful gadget which shows dab page links up in orange so you can see you've linked to a dab page instead of the page you intended.

Please, either:

  • start using that gadget so you can spot dab page links

or:

  • check every link you make, carefully

So that you can avoid linking to disambiguation pages like the River Avon you linked to in the captions of the Bath and North East Somerset infobox.

To remind you: the gadget is at Preferences, Gadgets, Appearance, then near the bottom of that section you find "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange". Just tick it, click "Save" at the bottom, and never accidentally leave a page linking to a disambiguation page again. It really helps. PamD 21:08, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Demography data[edit]

Hi @DragonofBatley, thanks so much for your efforts adding demographic data to infoboxes. It's certainly a big job!

My only request is could you please give the data as given in the source rather than augmenting into the 'other' category? In some areas it's less important because the numbers are so small (less than 1%). But in places like Cambridge, 15% 'other' is a massive number and unhelpful for anybody trying to understand the area. Dgp4004 (talk) 11:38, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also, 'other' has a specific meaning in the ONS religion data and is a separate field for very small minority religions, not the major religions listed. Also, 'not answered' is not the same as other.
For example, a Christian who did not complete the field in the census would be 'not answered' rather than 'not Christian'. If that makes sense. I fear we're creating misleading information if we try to reinterpret the ONS figures. Hope I've made sense there :) Dgp4004 (talk) 11:46, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi thanks for your message, I'll aim to represent what I can for cities and towns. It's usually a big task for unanswered and other religions since Judaism is mostly underrepresented at 0.1 or 0%. I'll aim to adjust the other category in my own time and future additions. I'd appreciate if some other editors could chip in and help out as it's a big task as you mentioned and I feel it helps representation of other districts since a majority of for example Suffolk is least religious compared to most of Essex for example. DragonofBatley (talk) 16:25, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't think that this information belongs in the infobox. Fortunately most UK places use {{infobox UK place}}, which (deliberately) doesn't have this as an option, so you won't be able to repeat it widely without consensus to get the infobox template changed (unlikely). Cambridge still uses the bloated {{infobox settlement}} (which is full of US obsessions like "race"); you make an excellent case to get it changed to the UK norm. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 00:10, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't belong in the infobox. I am reverting it now from the London boroughs per this consensus: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London/Archive 12#Ethnicity and Infobox bloat. It is good information - but it should be on the page, not in the infobox. The London boroughs have sections on their pages for this. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:33, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

London Borough of Brent[edit]

Hi,

I have reverted your recent edit to London Borough of Brent as it was unexplained.

If you have any questions please let me know on my talk page.

Historic England citation template[edit]

Can I make a suggestion. When citing the Historic England database, it's best to use the citation template we have. If you do, rather than this,[1] you get this.[2] Much tidier and more informative. Regards. KJP1 (talk) 07:28, 9 March 2024 (UTC) KJP1 (talk) 07:28, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Holy Cross Church, Lincoln has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Run-of-the-mill parish church. No evidence of notability; only trivial local coverage.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Moriwen (talk) 15:29, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

East and west[edit]

Please take care when changing the wording of a sentence. "Brewood is a few miles west of the county border with Shropshire " (yours) is not the same as "A few miles to the west of Brewood is the border with the county of Shropshire" (previous). I've changed "west" to "east" in your version to make it correct.

On further thoughts "a few" is pretty unencyclopedic, so I've looked at the map and changed it to "about 3 miles". PamD 14:18, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for March 30[edit]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Church of All Saints, Leighton Buzzard, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Early English.

(Opt-out instructions.) --DPL bot (talk) 18:04, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you still linking to disambiguation pages, after being told about the brilliant opt-in gadget which will colour them orange for you so you can see them and change the link? PamD 17:17, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would be particularly useful when you are adding lists of areas to town articles: please check your links in Batley, where you link to Brown Hill and Healey, West Yorkshire; in Huddersfield, where you link to Fartown, West Yorkshire, Lockwood and Longley, West Yorkshire; in Dewsbury, where you link to Flatts and Boothroyd; and in Maidenhead where you link to North Town. Either use the gadget, or carefully check every link you make: either way, please don't make links to disambiguation pages (or to redirects which point to disambiguation pages). Thanks. PamD 17:44, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And again in Leeds: there are links to the dab pages Black Moor (which doesn't list anywhere in Leeds) and Wortley (which does: I'll fix the link). Please stop linking to disambiguation pages. Thanks. PamD 07:15, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bracknell[edit]

On Bracknell you have added a collage of images, very good. Unfortunately the one you have put for Lily Hill Park is actually for Golders Hill Park in London! There is no lake in Lily Hill - I live 100 yards away. You should be able to find a Geograph image for Lily Hill, maybe of Lily Hill House. Dsergeant (talk) 17:01, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi no worries, I will have a quick look and fix it thanks DragonofBatley (talk) 17:05, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, new photo added from here:
Shelter at Lily Hill Park
. Hopefully this is correct. Regards DragonofBatley (talk) 17:10, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is good, thanks. Our radio club has its summer picnic in that shelter! Dsergeant (talk) 16:45, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Central Bedfordshire infobox image collage[edit]

Hi @DragonofBatley. Thanks for creating an image collage for Central Bedfordshire. However, I've removed two of the five images. 1. The image of the hill centres on Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire so not really appropriate for Central Bedfordshire. 2. The Dunstable aerial view. I don't think aerial shots come over well in a collage. Left the other three images and adjusted captions. Looks fine as is, but no objection to a couple of other pics. Cheers. "Status" in church infoboxes[edit]

I was puzzled why Guildford Cathedral had "Active" for both "Functional status" and "Status", and wondered what they both meant, so I checked the documentation for the infobox at Template:Infobox church and found that while "Functional status" is for The current function of the church, for example, "Abandoned", "Active", "Museum", "Preserved", "Status" is for The church's current ecclesiastical status or, if presently unused, its last previous status, for example, "Basilica", "Cathedral", "Church", "Oratory", "Parish church"., so I've changed that one to Cathedral. There's always something new to learn about editing this encyclopedia. PamD 17:37, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
