Elektronika in Belarus[edit]

Hey there. I noted in this edit to the Elektronika page that it was suggested that the term/brand is in use in Belarus. Could you provide more detail on this or add citations? Thanks! ZICO talk 01:46, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Thank you for this edit. This page was about the company. Please help me to restore the article. --TarzanASG (talk) 09:08, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@TarzanASG: thank you for pointing this out. Merging the articles was absolutely a bad idea - and it was carried out without any regard for consensus.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 19:54, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Russian language[edit]

This map is correct regarding the status of Russian language in Kazakhstan

I see that you are interested in topics related to Russia and Russian language. If you don't speak Russian language please remember that Russian language is not official in Russia. This status is called the state language of Russia. And Kazakhstan has only one state language (Kazakh language). State language means higher level than official language. Official language (lower level than state language) of Kazakhstan is Russian language. "The state language of the Republic of Kazakhstan shall be the Kazak language. In state institutions and local self-administrative bodies the Russian language shall be officially used on equal grounds along with the Kazak language." (Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan). --TarzanASG (talk) 15:30, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It would be helpful to add an adequately sourced explanation of the difference to the article, as otherwise it will confuse most readers.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:35, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The same sources (constitutions of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) that you removed. It was explained very clearly at [1] and [2]. And please specify whether you speak Russian using {{Babel}}. --TarzanASG (talk) 15:44, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The interpretation is unsourced, that's why it was removed. A proper source for the interpretation should be included, otherwise it's OR.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:07, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On United Aircraft Co.[edit]

I am not challenging you. I just converted your all the revenue info in the infobox into rubles and that is all. But however, I am curious on where you get the "operating income" and "net income" in the packet because if it does not show in the file, that could mean for some that you might have put made up that info on operating income and net income. Just saying. - Josephua (talk) 16:40, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Josephua: page 8, 'profit (loss) from operations' and 'loss for the period', respectively. The values are stored in rubles on Wikidata, they are converted through a template.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 21:58, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Orania land map[edit]

Hi, good work on the Orania article! A few days ago you created and added the Orania land map to the article. Unfortunately the map you used as source does not use the actual borders of the different private properties Orania is made up. The map originates from the VKN-website and is probably created to show the site of the VKN-property in relation to the relative site of the other properties. Only the VKN-borders are right.--I90Christian (talk) 12:33, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Christian! That's really unfortunate, I tried to find a more official map of the landholdings but I came up empty handed. The municipal demarcation maps for 2011 seem to show the borders of Vluytjeskraal 149 and 272, but they don't resemble anything described in sources. Do you know of any better map resource that we could use?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 12:49, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is an Eskom map for the Bo-Karoo region on the internet, showing all main farms and property subsections of these farms. Problem of that map is that it does not show any reference points, nor owners. Maybe you do not need it. You can combine the map of the the VKN-borders and the demarcation map.
  • The demarcation map tells you the exact borders of the 272 farm bought in 1993, some of the smaller farmsteads of 272 are now owned by Kambro (see VKN-map) but this ownership is irrelevant.
  • The demarcation map gives you also the south and west borders of the VAB area.
  • Your border between VKN and VAB is right. Note: The border between VKN and VAB is not really straight as you can see in the background geography. This gives you the borders of the VAB area.
  • You already have the right borders of VKN, except for the point where VKN/VAB/272 points meet, because the (west) border between VKN and 272 is a straight line.
  • The 380 ha of Kambro is the unnamed square (of farm 151) in the demarcation map, right on top of farm 272.
  • Note: The demarcation map also shows the north/south runway as a reference point. You can also use Google Maps as reference, were the borders are relatively clear. Then you have four farms on the map, around 3.300 hectares in total.
The Masada farm is missing in this overview. According to its size I think it is the property (like a box) right under 272 on the demarcation map. (There are no other options, unless the Masada farm lies opposite the river in the Free State, but I think that's not the matter).
Is important that this is only the private property that is linked to Orania. It is not said that these properties are also part of the area of the Orania Representative Council, because the boundary of the OVR/ORC (or the boundary between Thembelihle LM and the OVR) is not demarcated.--I90Christian (talk) 15:23, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'll try to come up with an accurate map based on the info you supplied. If you have the time, would you consider checking the rest of the article for accuracy? I resorted to some old or primary sources in some cases, so I feel it would benefit from another pair of eyes.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:29, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the new map based on your suggestions. Hope it's an improvement!--eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:41, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That map has the right borders. Off course I can check the article. When I translated it in Afrikaans and Dutch, I did not saw any inaccuracies. But I can check again. Is it okay that I drop some parts (I added a few parts when I translated the article) in Afrikaans or Dutch here on your talk page?--I90Christian (talk) 17:19, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, maybe you can name the map on Commons something like Orania private property map? Then it is clear that it is not a map about the OVR area.--I90Christian (talk) 17:21, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I did use some sources from the af\nl versions to update the article, if you feel that something is missing feel free to point it out. I added back the map, I think the caption is clear enough.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 21:56, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Underlying lk, this is 隐世高人. Sphilbrick| sent speedy deletion nomination relate to Zelenodolsk Plant by you creation to me, the details are below :

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Zelenodolsk Plant requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/report/1995/rus95/z_list.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I hope you can re-edit History section in this entry and save it. Thanks! 隐世高人 (talk) 04:50, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Orania, Northern Cape[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Orania, Northern Cape has been completed.

A couple of things. I have placed quotation marks around every instance of the word volkstaat since it is not a word that has been adopted into the English language. I am uncertain whether this word should be capitalised every time it is used as I found it was in the Wikipedia article Volkstaat. I'll leave that to you to decide. I removed italics around any formal name where I found them. There is now consistency throughout the article.

I also used single quotes (') rather than double quotes (") around every quotation in the article as both had been used. Single quotes are standard British (and I assume South African) usage.

Before you submit this for a Good Article Review I would suggest that the sections on Demographics, Religion, Private company (budget figures), Politics and administration, Economy, Construction, and Education be updated. Each contains out-of-date information. The rest of the article should be checked as well.

Good luck with the GAR when you get to it.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing[edit]

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help request for mapping section titles[edit]

Hi. We (the Research Team at Wikimedia Foundation) are building an algorithm that will align Wikipedia article sections across languages. For improving this algorithm we need the help of multilingual Wikipedia editors to provide true statements to the algorithm. You are contacted because based on your Babel template and/or content translation tool usage you know at least two of the following languages: ar (Arabic), fr (French), ja (Japanese), en (English), es (Spanish), ru (Russian).

(Note: by clicking the links in the following paragraph, you will be taken to Google spreadsheet.) If you'd like to help us with translating a subset of the section titles on or before 2018-05-06, please read and follow the instructions. If you see instructions in another language, please scroll down to find your preferred language. If you have questions about this message, you can contact us via Diego. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:High Precision Systems logo.gif[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:High Precision Systems logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. External peer review of articles[edit]

Hi, I came across the History_of_computing_in_the_Soviet_Union article. If you'd be interested in getting external, academic feedback on it, please consider submitting it to the WikiJournal of Humanities (www.WikiJHum.com).
The journal couples the rigour of academic peer review with the extreme reach of the encyclopedia (sister journal to WikiJMed and WikiJSci). It is therefore an excellent way to get feedback and suggestions from experts outside of Wikipedia. Peer-reviewed articles are dual-published both as standard academic PDFs, as well as directly into Wikipedia. This improves the scientific accuracy of the encyclopedia, and rewards authors with citable, indexed publications.
Anyway, let me know whether you'd be interested in putting an article through academic peer review (either solo, or with a team of coauthors). Alternatively, if you would prefer to write on a different topic, we may be able to accommodate you.

Italian comune redundant parameter[edit]

Hey, if you edit {{Infobox Italian comune}} again, can you remove "| short_description" from the whitelist at the very end? Changes to Infobox Swiss Town[edit]

I see you made several major changes to this template to pull data from Wikidata without any discussion. I think this changes are ill-advised and should have been discussed. First, one of the fundamental problems with Wikidata is that it allows vandals to make changes that are invisible on watchlists here and doesn't require the same sourcing as is required here. Subtle vandalism is much more likely to remain in place when it is spread out through a number of different entries on two different sites. Additionally it appears that the changed template will only accept local values if the wikidata field is empty, instead of using local values first. This will make it frustrating and confusing for any user who changes a field in the infobox, only to discover that nothing changes. The connection to a completely separate database is not easy to figure out. Secondly, who will be keeping up the data? Currently I maintain the population and area data which is pulled into the template. This data gets updated once a year into templates for all 26 Cantons in Switzerland. It looks like now it will have to be individually updated for all 2,600 municipalities. So, will you be making all these updates each year? Tied to this problem is the fact that some of the data is out of date even now (see Basel, Bettingen, Riehen) were there is more recent data, which is no longer shown due to this template change.Tobyc75 (talk) 15:51, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A few points: Wikidata changes should now appear on the WP watchlist; the wikidata statements are all sourced back to the BfS, so refs should not be an issue; the previous version of the infobox also privileges template data compared to locally entered figures, that part won't be news to editors. About updates: QuickStatemets allows users to import csv/tsv data in a process that is probably faster than updating the subtemplates on here (not to mention the other Wikipedias). Having said all that, I recognise that the changes were unilateral, so if the consensus is to keep using the old local data templates I will, of course, abide by that consensus.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:36, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A preference allows Wikidata changes to appear in the watchlist but that makes the watchlist useless (last time I checked). That's because there is a large amount of churning at Wikidata and there is no easy way to tell if a change there is correct, or whether/how a change affects an article. Johnuniq (talk) 04:34, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So, in order to watch for vandalism on Wikidata I either have to add 3000+ articles to my watchlist over there, or use some preference change (what change, where??) that might clog my watchlist with so much noise that I'll be hard pressed to see the vandalism? As for using the batch tool, that looks like I'll have to map all 3000+ Qid's for each municipality to the local numbers used by the Swiss government. I can't see any way to do that outside of manually looking up EVERY SINGLE ONE! This looks like a lot of extra work and a lot of extra chances for mistakes for a change that doesn't bring me any benefit, especially to now have the data in a store that allows, but does not require references on the data!Tobyc75 (talk) 16:32, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
QIDs and SFOS codes can be mapped by downloading the CSV file from this query and using Excel's VLOOKUP function, it won't take more than a couple of minutes.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:57, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's handy, now how about mapping district and canton SFOS numbers to QIDs? Second, I made a change to Basel population since they publish figures more often than the Federal office does. However, it looks like the changes you made to the template force it to look at 2017 numbers first and ignore anything else. Finally, none of this addresses monitoring vandalism and the noise of wikidata swamping any attempts to watch for it...Tobyc75 (talk) 12:35, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Importing the SFOS codes for districts and cantons is pretty straightforward. Having the template fetch the most recent population figures, admittedly, is more troublesome. {{wikidata}} fetches the claim with the highest rank, regardless of how recent it is, and neither can QuickStatements be used to update ranks, at least for now. I'll try to find a workaround, if that can't be done within a reasonable time frame, we can go back to the old system.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 21:43, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tobyc75 - if the data is in Wikidata all Wikipedia editions can directly use it. Additionally there are people that only work on Wikidata data sets (use it for something else, e.g. analyse data for all of Europe), so it would be great of the data in WD is correct. What is better, maintain it in WD and Wikipedias or only maintain it in WD? Regarding vandalism: You can create a page maintained by ListeriaBot that lists all the data. That page should only change if data changes. 78.55.38.54 (talk) 15:05, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Quickstatements is not a friendly program and the documentation for adding sources is totally lacking. I can't add the title of the source because Wikidata needs a language for the title, but I can't find anywhere where it explains how to add a language tag to a source title. Also, you can only add a publisher if they already have a Wikidata entry, which I'm not interested in slogging through all the counter-intuitive numbers and codes to figure out. So, I can create a source without any important details like the title or the publisher, instead of the non-Wikidata way with those details. Also, there's still no way for 2018 data to show up for those locations that have 2018 data. It looks like it still defaults to 2017 without checking whether there is newer data. Tobyc75 (talk) 14:44, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tobyc75: I expanded a bit on the guide Wikipedia:Uploading metadata to Wikidata which is hopefully now more clear. I'm also uploading the new pop figures which will be displayed as soon as the import is complete.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 06:45, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

France metadata Wikidata[edit]

@Underlying lk: I started loading {{France metadata Wikidata}} and have 1,000 done. Looking at the URLs they are all the same: INSEE. This is verifiable, but not ideal. URLs to individual communes take the form:

The URLs are uniform except for the municipality key. Thus it would be easy for the template to retrieve the key (27486 & 10063) from Wikidata and render the URL that way, so we have a direct URL to the commune page. This would also make it trivial to change the URL in a single place in the future instead of updating 40k records on Wikidata. The only question is if all URLs take this form. I'll wait to hear back before proceeding. -- GreenC 15:26, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Created Template:France metadata Wikidata/sandbox to demonstrate. But for some reason it's not retrieving P374 from Wikidata .. example municipality https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q732495 for Brienne-la-Vieille with test edit. -- GreenC 15:56, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, sandbox is working. Loaded in Brienne-la-Vieille to demonstrate. Let me know what you think of changing over to this method. -- GreenC 16:06, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Have not heard back from you so I went ahead and changed the template to point to the more specific URL. It can always be changed back easily enough. I'll re-start deploying the template. -- GreenC 15:19, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]<
