Британские номерные знаки (в соответствии с системой нумерации 1983—2001 гг), в 2004 году получили название Регистрационные номерные знаки транспортных средств Великобритании — являются обязательными номерными знаками в Великобритании, и существуют с 1904. По закону почти все транспортные средства, которые используются на общественных трассах, должны иметь регистрационные номерные знаки. Одним из исключений из этого правила являются официальные транспортные средства царствующего монарха.
Регулирующий законодательный акт 1903 «The Motor Car Act 1903», который вступил в силу 1 января 1904, требовал, чтобы весь автомобильный транспорт был включён в Государственный регистр автотранспортных средств и имел регистрационные номерные знаки. Этот акт был принят для того, чтобы автомобили легко можно было идентифицировать в случае аварии, либо в случаях нарушения закона.
Номерные знаки транспортных средств в Великобритании имеют прямоугольную либо квадратную форму, точно указанные разрешённые размеры таблички номерного знака и буквами, нанесёнными в соответствием с правилами. В пределах Великобритании сейчас существует 2 типа системы нумерации и регистрации: один — для Великобритании, он назначается Агентством по лицензированию водителей и транспортных средств (Driver And Vehicle Licensing Agency, DVLA), и вторая система — для Северной Ирландии, назначается Транспортным агентством (Driver & Vehicle Agency, DVA), обе имеют одинаковый статус. Цвета и размеры номерных знаков
[править | править код]На выпущенные сегодня номерные знаки нанесены чёрные буквенные знаки на белом светоотражающем фоне (для переднего номерного знака) или на жёлтом светоотражающем фоне (для заднего номерного знака). Такая же цветовая система действовала и для номеров образца 1983 -2001 годов. На более старых английских номерных знаках были серые, белые или серебристые буквы на чёрном фоне. Этот стандарт номерных знаков перестали выпускать в 1972, и сейчас такие номерные знаки могут быть использованы только на автомобилях, выпущенных до 1 января 1973 г.
Передние номерные знаки имеют размеры 520 × 111 мм (20,5″ × 4⅜″). Задний номерной знак может быть 520 × 111 мм (стандартный), 285 × 203 мм (квадратная форма) или 533 × 152 мм (большой).
Мотоциклы ранее имели двусторонний номерной знак, прикреплённый к верхней точке грязезащитного щитка, он повторял контур колеса и был виден с обеих сторон. В 1975 году было введено требование об обязательном наличии переднего номерного знака, из-за большой опасности, которой подвергались пешеходы в случае аварии.
Транспортные средства, принадлежащие штату Британских ВС, используют номерные знаки чёрного цвета с белыми буквами.

[править | править код]Действующая система номерных знаков Великобритании была введена в действие в 2001. Каждый номер (индексирование номерного знака) состоит из семи знаков. Слева направо знак состоит из следующих символов:
- Код региона area code (the local memory tag), состоящий из двух букв — первая указывает регион, в котором зарегистрировано транспортное средство, второе указывает код офиса регистрации. Буквы I, Q и Z не используются в данном коде;
- Двузначный идентификатор срока службы (Age Identifier), который меняется два раза в год, в марте и в сентябре. Этот код содержит в двух последних цифрах либо номер года, (например 05 для 2005), если он был присвоен в интервале с марта по август, либо, если регистрация проходила с сентября по февраль следующего года, другую цифру, отражающую номер года, но к ней будет прибавлено 50, (то есть для сентября 2005 будет стоять цифра 55)
- Произвольную последовательность из трёх знаков, индивидуальную для каждого автомобиля. Буквы I и Q исключены, как и сочетания букв, которые могут показаться обидными, включая иностранные языки.
Эта схема имеет три преимущества:
- Покупатель подержанного автомобиля может теоретически определить год первой регистрации автомобиля без необходимости проверять его дополнительно;
- В случае, если полиция будет расследовать несчастный случай, или преступление, связанного с данным транспортным средством, свидетели обычно вспомнят начальный шифр на щитке номеров; впоследствии будет проще сузить круг подозреваемых автомобилей до небольшого числа путём проверки по базе данных, без необходимости знать полный номер.
- В соответствии с этой схемой, номеров должно хватить для регистрации автомобилей до 2050 года.

[править | править код]Английские номерные знаки большей частью соответствуют Европейскому стандарту оформления номерных знаков[2], с черными знаками на белом или жёлтом фоне. Стандартное оформление также включает полоску синего цвета с левой стороны номерного знака с флагом Великобритании (до выхода Великобритании из ЕС — флагом Европы) кодом страны — этот элемент (полоска) не является обязательным в Великобритании, и многие водители предпочитают не доплачивать за эту часть номерного знака. Автомобильный код Великобритании — UK, но законы разрешают использовать и другие аббревиатуры[3]: GB (бывший код до 2021 года), ENG, SCO[4], CYM[5] или использовать надписи вместо них: United Kingdom, Great Britain, England, Scotland, Wales, Cymru (слово Уэльс по-валлийски).
