Steve Claggett (born June 11, 1989) is a Canadian professional boxer who has challenged for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super lightweight title.
Early life
[edit]Claggett has Chinese ancestry through his maternal grandfather. At age 19 he started having trouble with the law which led to boxing to help cope[1]
Amateur career
[edit]Claggett had a successful amateur career with 29 fights and winning the Alberta Provincial Championships and in 2007, the Canadian National Championships.[2]
Professional career
[edit]Claggett made his debut against Brandon Carlick in Edmonton in September 2008. He won a majority decision. Claggett suffered his first defeat of his career against Romeo Jakosalem in the Philippines. This was also his first fight outside of Canada.[3]
Claggett vs. Ulysse Jr
[edit]Claggett faced off against fellow Canadian Yves Ulysse Jr. twice as a professional with both fighters picking up a win each. Claggett won the first fight in Montreal in October 2017 on a split decision. Ulysse Jr got revenge in April 2019 in California winning on a unanimous decision.[4]
Claggett vs. Lopez
[edit]Claggett had his biggest fight to date on June 29 when he took on WBO champion Teofimo Lopez. Despite putting up a good effort Claggett was unsuccessful and lost a unanimous decision.[5]
