Uba Sani (born 31 December 1970) is a Nigerian engineer and politician who is the current governor of Kaduna State since 2023.^[1] He previously served as the Senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district from 2019 to 2023.^[2]

Career[edit]

Sani went into politics after the return of Democracy in Nigeria in 1999, and supported the People's Democratic Party presidential candidate, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. After winning the presidential election, Sani was appointed Special advisor on public affairs to the president. He also worked at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on some advisory roles to the then FCT Minister, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and the Kaduna State Ministry of Housing and Works. In 2011, Sani contested in the People's Democratic Party primaries for the Kaduna Central Senatorial seat but he lost the primaries, and in 2015, he was appointed by the Kaduna state governor Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai as the Special Adviser, Political and intergovernmental affairs. However, in 2019, Sani showed interest and contested the second time for the Kaduna Central senatorial seat under the ruling political party, All Progressives Congress, APC and was elected senator during the February 2019 Nigeria general elections.^[3]^[4] In 2022, Uba Sani picked APC nomination forms for 2023 governorship election in Kaduna State.^[5]

Uba Sani founded the Uba Sani Foundation in 2018. The foundation's mission is to promote increased access to good healthcare services, education and improved livelihood for the underprivileged in Nigeria.^[6]

2023 elections[edit]

Sani emerged the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Kaduna State for 2023 elections.^[7] He defeated Sani Sha'aban and Bashir Abubakar to emerge winner at the primaries. Uba Sani is believed to be El-Rufai's anointed candidate.^[8]

Kaduna Guber elections[edit]

Senator Uba Sani won the 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) primary Elections .^[9]^[10]

Senator Uba Sani won the 2023 general elections with a total of 730,002 votes to defeat his closest rival, Isa Ashiru of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 719,196 votes.^[11]^[12]^[13]

[25] The PDP's Rose Okoji Oko was elected senator in 2019 but died in March 2020. Jarigbe and fellow PDP member Stephen Odey fought in court over the ensuing by-election's PDP nomination; Odey won both initial court decisions and the by-election before taking office late in December 2020. However, Jarigbe later won several court challenges which declared him the legitimate PDP nominee and thus senator. Jarigbe took office in September 2021.

[26] Nwaoboshi was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in June 2021.

[27] Alimikhena was elected as a member of the APC but switched to the PDP in June 2022.

[28] The APC's Adedayo Clement Adeyeye was elected senator in 2019 but the NASS Election Petition Tribunal awarded and Court of Appeal affirmed the win to Olujimi. She took office in November 2019.

[29] Onyewuchi was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the LP in June 2022.

[30] Due to disputes over alleged irregularities, the APC's Benjamin Uwajumogu was not sworn in until July 2019. Uwajumogu died in December 2019 leading to a bye-election. After disputes, Ibezim was awarded the bye-election victory and took office in April 2021.

[31] Due to disputes over the alleged forced declaration of his election, Okorocha was not sworn in until June 14, 2019.

[32] Shekarau was elected as a member of the APC but switched to the NNPP in May 2022 then to the PDP in August 2022.

[33] Babba Kaita was elected as a member of the APC but switched to the PDP in April 2022.

[34] Aliero was elected as a member of the APC but switched to the PDP in May 2022.

[35] Abdullahi was elected as a member of the APC but switched to the PDP in June 2022.

[36] The PDP's Dino Melaye was elected senator in 2019 but Adeyemi petitioned against the results and the NASS Election Petition Tribunal annulled the results and called a new election. Adeyemi won the ensuing rerun election and took office in December 2019.

[37] The APC's Adebayo Osinowo was elected senator in 2019 but died in June 2020. Abiru won the ensuing bye-election and took office in December 2020.

[38] Akwashiki was elected as a member of the APC but switched to the SDP in July 2022.

[39] The APC's David Umaru was elected senator in 2019 but the Supreme Court awarded the APC primary win to Musa making him senator. He took office in July 2019.

[40] Balogun was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in May 2022.

[41] The APC's Ignatius Datong Longjan was elected senator in 2019 but died in February 2020. Daduut won the ensuing bye-election and took office in December 2020.

[42] The APC's Abubakar Shehu Tambuwal was elected senator in 2019 but a Court of Appeal awarded the win to Abdullahi Danbaba. He took office in November 2019 as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in April 2022.

[43] Bwacha was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in February 2022.

[fnZamfara-44] Prior to inauguration, the APC's Zamfara votes were voided due to improper holding of party primaries. Thus the PDP runners-up took office. All three (Anka, Hassan Muhammed Gusau, Yaú) switched to the APC in June 2021. In February 2022, Muhammed Gusau resigned to become Zamfara Deputy Governor.
