Regarding your changes to the above article: Herzog has not yet been inducted, and your additions create potential for this article to be unstable. It is currently in the middle of a featured list candidacy, so I would ask that you please refrain from making changes of a potentially unstable nature until that time has passed or the induction ceremonies are complete. Thanks. KV5 (TalkPhils) 01:14, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Okie dokie. Revert away. However, note that the individual team descriptions need to carefully distinguish between election and induction. For example, the Cardinals have had 13 managers elected to the Hall, but only 12 will have been inducted until the 2010 ceremonies. The problem is that individuals are elected several months before actual induction. It's a known fact that Whitey Herzog will enter the Hall on July 25, 2010 (barring any earth-shattering Pete Rose-style revelations). — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:20, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • As far as I'm aware, I did check those; if you see any mistakes, please feel free to correct them. KV5 (TalkPhils) 01:22, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • No mistakes—just an issue of definition. I did find an interesting thing when I looked into the Baseball-reference.com manager lists for each team. Herzog is listed as a Hall of Famer by that site even though he hasn't yet been inducted. The main discrepancy that creates in our article is that the statement that "two Hall of Famers" have managed the Royals is accurate right now, but the underlying reference (the Baseball-reference.com list) includes Herzog as a third Hall member, which he won't be until July 25. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:38, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Line-ups in the Six Nations articles?[edit]

When did we decide that this was a good idea? I think this ought to be discussed somewhere first, before making such a large-scale addition, especially since adding the line-ups for each game will make the article HUGE! – Pee Jay 23:13, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Team lineups removed. The one question I have on this: If it's such a bad idea to have them in a 6N season article, then shouldn't lineups be removed from all articles on each year's June and November Tests? Now that I've thought of it, that's something that really needs to be hashed out on WP RU. — Dale Arnett (talk) 00:36, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I wasn't going to remove them, as I actually quite like the idea, but I do think it should be discussed. Tbh, I haven't been following rugby articles as much as I used to, mostly because of the Ireland flags issue, so I dunno what the situation is with the June and November Test articles. Basically, my major concern is with the eventual size of the article, since we have 15 matches to do line-ups for, but if the June and November Test articles look OK with the line-ups included, then I don't see why we shouldn't on the Six Nations articles. Nevertheless, we'd better discuss it with the Project. – Pee Jay 00:54, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. You are being notified as you have made a number of contributions to the article. I have found a number of concerns which you can see at Talk:Tennessee Volunteers women's basketball/GA1. I have immediately de-listed the article as the referencing is so poor. When these issues are fixed the article can be re-nominated at WP:GAN. If you disagree with the reassessment please contest this at WP:GAR. Thanks. Olympic terminology[edit]

The term "title" was used since the start of the Olympics. If you insist on changing it to "gold", do so for all days. --Nitsansh (talk) 21:18, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Fair enough. I prefer "gold", but I don't think it's worth changing now. — Dale Arnett (talk) 21:23, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tie break in rugby union European nations cup[edit]

According to my calculation, either Portugal or Romania could get level with Russia on 23 points. Does Russia hold the tie-break advantage against both?--Nitsansh (talk) 21:18, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Russia hold all the tiebreakers. Russia have swept Portugal and have a win and draw with Romania. —Dale Arnett (talk)
OK, I wasn't sure the tie-break is head-to-head. So now it's only the race between Romania and Portugal for 3rd place that remains unsettled...--Nitsansh (talk) 00:23, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I THOUGHT that was the situation. I looked further, and apparently the IRB's official site doesn't say that Russia are in. In fact, this story specifically states that Russia needed a win to secure their berth in this round. It may be that head-to-head results aren't used in a tiebreaker in the qualifying procvess. I'll remove Russia as a qualified team in the current events portal, and you can handle the other articles. — Dale Arnett (talk) 02:37, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, it turned out I was right all along. The IRB was just slow in updating its own site; it posted Russia's qualification later that day (28 February). The tiebreakers were exactly as I said. All relevant articles, including the current events portal, now correctly list Russia as in. — Dale Arnett (talk) 19:00, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page move[edit]

Fixed Thank you for posting on my talk. I have fixed this error. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 20:29, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not going to approve it for DYK myself, since I've been working on related article topics recently. However, FYI, it is at 5x expansion, but the "orphan" tag at the top of the article is a problem. See what you can do about de-orphaning the article and then remove the "orphan" template. Once that's done, it should be good for DYK. cmadler (talk) 14:04, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Now de-orphaned. I count 7 incoming links, with one more to be added once the postseason bids come in. Potential for a few more because several 2009–10 SEC women's team articles don't have opposing team links added. — Dale Arnett (talk) 18:50, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

for updating the WBB tournament pages. Just didn't want you to think it went unnoticed. --SPhilbrick T 12:09, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dale- Wanted to get your opinion/expertise on something. I get time out errors every time I update CBB season page and have seen others comment taht this happens to them as well. I suspect it may be that the page has gotten too complex with all of the links, templates, etc. Should we cut back the standings or eliminate them? I made an offer to create season pages for each conference after the Final Four, we could house the standings there and just link the season pages from the conference table. What do you think? Rikster2 (talk) 02:22, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm getting the same errors you've been getting. I think you may be on to something with respect to the complexity of the page. You have a good idea when it comes to housing standings on the conference season pages, but it's not enough. I think a couple of other sections could be split off into their own pages—(1) coaching changes and (2) conference champions and honors. Matter of fact, (2) could be an alternate place to put all of the conference standings in a single place, along with housing each conference's standings on its own page. — Dale Arnett (talk) 02:38, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm having trouble just getting the old version to load, so I can't see how it was set up, but have you tried including the conference standings via transclusion? I think that might solve your problem. cmadler (talk) 11:54, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Atletico Madrid[edit]

I think they are guaranteed a spot in the Europa League because Sevilla qualified for Europe. Kingjeff (talk) 17:56, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Actually, no. The loser of the Copa del Rey final only gets a Europa League place if the winner qualifies for the Champions League. If the winner qualifies for the Europa League through its league position, the cup winner's place does NOT pass to the defeated finalist, but instead goes to the highest-placed team not already qualified for Europe. What this means:
    • If Sevilla wins the Copa del Rey, Atlético would get the cup winner's place only if Sevilla maintain their current fourth-place position and qualify for the Champions League.
    • If Sevilla finishes fifth, Atlético could not earn the extra Europa League place through La Liga because they can't improve on their ninth-place position.
Hope this helps... — Dale Arnett (talk) 18:20, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with an administrator[edit]

Dale, I am having a problem with an administrator, User:Pats1, who is under the impression that project-wide formatting and standards do not apply to WP:NFL, and seems to be engaged in enforcing his own formatting preferences and possible violations of WP:OWN. I would be grateful if you would watch Fred Taylor (American football) and User talk:Pats1. I am tired of having perfectly valid edits reverted because the admin in question did not make them himself. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk)

Important!!! -- Please pay attention[edit]

Dear Mr Arnett,

I am contacting you because you are an admin and involved in various sporting related articles, particularly rugby.

Let's just stick to the pertinent facts here: ohnoitsjamie (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) has deleted the following articles: 1988/89 Courage League and template:1988/89 Courage League Table, 1990/91 Courage League and template:1990/91 Courage League Table, 1991/92 Courage League and template:1991/92 Courage League Table, 1992/93 Courage League and template:1992/93 Courage League Table, 1993/94 Courage League and template:1993/94 Courage League Table, 1993/94 Courage League and template:1993/94 Courage League Table, 1994/95 Courage League and template:1994/95 Courage League Table, 1995/96 Courage League and template:1995/96 Courage League Table, 1996/97 Courage League and template:1996/97 Courage League Table, Hill, Back, Dallaglio, English top flight rugby union league tables since 1987/88.

I believe such information was not previously available on the internet; I spent considerable time and effort as part of the collaborative wiki in writing up these league tables and leagues from RFU yearbooks.

User:Noq politely asked user:ohnoitsjamie for these articles to be undeleted but he was refused

Ohnoitsjamie has also unilaterally decided to ban me from Wikipedia. This means that I am forced to create new accounts in order to speak to you.

In my very humble opinion, these articles were deleted as part of a concerted, petty, vindictive campaign of intimidation against me.

Could you therefore please review such articles and undelete (unvandalise) them where you consider necessary?

Please note that this message may be vandalised from your talk page. If it is I apologise -- people deserve to know the truth about this vandalism.

Thank you for your attention - your considered attention would be most welcome. Vice Admiral Drake (talk) 20:29, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you could do as user:Noq requests and undelete them and then move them to his user spage that would be useful for the Wikipedia project. Thx. Vice Admiral Drake (talk) 18:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The templates were deleted per G5. Creations by a banned or blocked user(s); the above user was blocked for attacks and edit warring, and now repeatedly creates socks and moans about it. Please contact me if you have further questions. OhNoitsJamie Talk 21:31, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad ohnoitsjamie (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) has posted here Mr Arnett because I can expose him here much better than when my complaints are censored from his own talk page or other noticeboards. He is hiding behind "G5 bla bla bla" is just an excuse. While I understand that admins might want powers to delete crap that was patent nonsense, blatant vandalism, self promotion, etc, these were legitmate articles legitimately created. He could have done the honourable thing and used his discretion (funny how that link is red btw) but for once recognised good quality work. But no, he chose the dishonourable, petty, vindictive way out which is why I made the reasonable, civil request above.
If ohnoitsjamie (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) can come up with a better excuse than "G5 bla bla bla" and explain in detail why those deletions were for the good of Wikipedia (as opposed to just satisfying his petty ego), then people might start listening to him. Unfortunately, I don't think they can.
If you could therefore do as user:Noq requests (now there's a man with a million more honour than some admins I could name), I'm sure Wikipedians of the future would be extremely happy with you. Drake no walky planky (talk) 18:15, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I might offer my input here: While it may seem nonsensical to have an article deleted for no apparently because of something called G5, this is in fact a part of Wikipedia's policies. G5 says that we don't allow banned/blocked users to contribute, and since you are evading your block to continually try to recreate these articles, you are then violating the policy on sock puppetry. The articles were originally deleted after a discussion, whose result was a decision to delete. I hope this may help you better understand what is going on. Bramble claw x 18:35, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thank Brambleclawx for his input, but Dale, I'm afraid he's basically missing wrong. OK, there was a decision to delete the perfectly adequate article Hill, Back, Dallaglio at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hill, Back, Dallaglio (actually I think the voting was some stacking of votes and other votes were simply misguided but I'll deal with that later -- it's not important that right now). But the articles on the Courage League Division Ones? There was no discussion there. ohnoitsjamie (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) took it upon himself to vandalise those articles, and he still has not tried to explain why, hiding behind bureaucracy. Although the policy is no doubt well intentioned, it does permit in circumstances like this, admins to act basically as bullies to satisfy their own egos. He has not used his discretion. The articles were clearly legitimate had anyone else other than me created them. Indeed as I noted to user:Noq, before I was censored, the French language Wikipedia already has such articles. Yet when they were created in the English language Wikipedia -- these is the English leagues remember, they are vandalised by one of their own admins, who happens to know bugger all about rugby (Canada are easily the worst of the former dominions at rugby, having a record of P4 L4 v NZ, P6 L6 v Aus, P2 L2 v SA, P6 L6 v Eng) and is sticking his nose in where he's not welcome.
Therefore I ask you again to please kindly comply with user:Noq's reasonable request and undelete theese articles. Thx. Ohyesitssirfrancis (talk) 21:31, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I did understand why you listed the U.S. Women's Open qualifiers the way you did. You did it because that's how it has been done on the articles for the Men's U.S. Open. However, I did not believe that replicating a bad article design was a good idea. The format used in the Men's U.S. Open articles is merely copied from the way the USGA displays the qualifiers in their publication. And, while, it may work there, I don't believe it is a format that is easy to understand in the very different context of Wikipedia. Sometimes just copying the way things have always been done is not the best way. I hope you understand. --Crunch (talk) 11:49, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2010 FIBA World Championship rosters[edit]

Some guys on their keep editing the names of Greek clubs to the incorrect Greek language form. I have fixed it several times and the keep changing it back and the one guy is getting aggressive about it. They are not adding the English names of the clubs, but the Greek ones. But the clubs officially use the names in English everywhere in the world outside of Greece. For an English website they definitely use the English names, which are the official ones of the club. Like Olympiacos, not Olympiakos. Can you discuss this with those people that keep changing it and explain it to them?74.194.176.82 (talk) 14:27, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Basketball squad template[edit]

Hi there. I just read your message at Template talk:Football squad player. Unfortunately I was on wikibreak at the time, but I was wondering if you were still interested in adapting it for basketball articles? I've coded a prototype, which has an optional |basketball parameter. An example of it in use can be found here (columns are optional, all I did was cut and paste from Watford F.C.)

I notice that WP:BASKETBALL has its own roster template. But at Olympiakos B.C. the football one is still used for roster changes, so it might be worthwhile to do this. Let me know if you still think it would be worthwhile, and if so I'll ask an admin to make the amendment. Regards, --WFC (talk) 00:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dale

I know this has been discussed in the past but with no conclusions. I feel that now we have grown a real monster. The August article ended with 371KB! It takes ages to load and difficult to edit such enormous files! It's nice that people like to contribute more and more news and results, but I think we should find a way to filter the items with a net of bigger holes, if you see what I mean...--Nitsansh (talk) 22:19, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have to agree. I know one thing that was discussed was creating a subportal for North American (US/Canada) sports; maybe it's time to revisit that idea. Also, August is always a busy month because it's the start of Champions League and Europa League qualifiers, not to mention other major soccer competitions. This year, the Youth Olympics sent it up another notch. I think it also might be a good idea to create subportals for specific sports, especially soccer and basketball. — Dale Arnett (talk) 23:39, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • I checked August 2009 article. It was only 165KB, less than half of this year. There must be more than just the youth Olympics to make such a huge difference.--Nitsansh (talk) 15:49, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Also checked July. 266K in 2010 vs 145K in 2009. Last year the difference between Jul and Aug was 20K, this year over 100K!--Nitsansh (talk) 15:59, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • What do you consider a reasonable size for a month's article? --Nitsansh (talk) 15:31, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think there are just months who are bigger (like Aug 2010) and some who are a lot smaller like mentioned above. In the Summer months there is more traffic in most sports, so more is added of course. Don´t know if there is a need to split... Kante4 (talk) 21:52, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't explain how the pages have doubled in size from the same months last year. The number of events worthy of reporting on these pages didn't grow that much. For example: I don't recall all the junior basketball championships in Europe (there are 6 of them!) even mentioned in previous years. --Nitsansh (talk) 22:09, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just found out that August 2010 in sports ranks in 4th place on the Long pages list. Two more articles this year (March and July) made the top 30. I definitely won't like these articles to become regular features on this list....--Nitsansh (talk) 20:24, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The 2009, 2008, and 2007 articles don't seem to list results for all ten. 2009 lists seven, 2008 lists six, etc. Enigmamsg 18:27, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion has begun about whether the article NCAA Division I men's basketball coaches wins list, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/NCAA Division I men's basketball coaches wins list until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Jrcla2 (talk) 15:44, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SI's MLB all-decade team[edit]

Thanks for the great "catch" (excuse the pun), re the starting rotation in the online cite. When I was doing the draft of the article (in or about Jan. 2010), I had based it on the December 28, 2009, print issue of Sports Illustrated, which only had a starting pitcher, relief pitcher, and closer. It did not have a starting rotation. When I finally was ready to convert the draft to an actual Wiki page ( a few months ago), I checked to see if there was an online cite and then added it as a footnote. Unfortunately, I "assumed" that SI's online page would be the same as the Dec. 28 print issue. Obviously I was wrong. Thanks again for spotting that. I've just suggested merging True Family into List of Unification Church members since the information in the first is mostly aready in the second. Please discuss if you like: Talk:List of Unification Church members#Merge in True Family. Kitfoxxe (talk) 09:08, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the extinct species of Lady Paladins, Ladybacks, and Lady Rebels[edit]

I've posted various nominations on CFD today and yesterday about no-longer-Lady teams. You created some of these categories. Weigh in if you like.--Mike Selinker (talk) 00:29, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2010 end of year rugby tests[edit]

Hi Dale,

Just to let you know I undid your update on the Spain/Canada match about the blood replacement as it wasn't a blood replacement. A Canadian prop got sin binned on 28th minute. On 34th minute a scrum occurs. As an experienced front row must be on the field when a scrum occurs, Canada's number 8 left the pitch to allow a replacement prop to enter. On 38th minute the sin binned prop re-enters the pitch but as no other scrum occurs until half-time, the replacement prop stays on the pitch and the number 8 stays out. At half time, the other starting prop comes off, being de facto replaced by the replacement prop, and the number 8 rejoins the pitch.

  • Image restored. An IP user apparently misinterpreted the wording of the logo as a change to the competition name and made changes accordingly, with no explanation. — Dale Arnett (talk) 04:36, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball Hall of Fame websites[edit]

You have edited several articles about baseball Hall of Fame selections. Recently a robot has marked many of the references [dead link], primarily because the NBHOFM has a new website this year or last year. Many of those targets are press releases.

I don't know how many of the press releases or other pages have been republished somewhere on the new site. If not, the Internet Archive may be useful. old website, baseball Hall of Fame (NBHOFM) --P64 (talk) 23:11, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the tip. By the way, the Hall has migrated all of its bios to the new site, so those are just a matter of changing the links accordingly. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:05, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your most recent edit to Interstate 70 in Colorado[edit]

Dale, FYI, in your most recent edit to this page, among other things, you updated the date from 2009 to 2010 for the claim "As of 2009, the Eisenhower Tunnel is the highest vehicular tunnel in the United States". The problem is that this sentence is sourced to this page [1], which was last updated in 2009. As such this citation is no longer valid, as it cannot be used to source a claim dated to 2010, being last updated in 2009. Do you have a source for 2010? or should the data be rolled back to 2009 in the article? Dave (talk) 17:11, 15 December 2010 (UTC) PS, per WP:NOTBROKEN, it is not necessary to "fix" links to redirect pages.[reply]

51 (number)[edit]

I got confused when I read this. In your change on Sept 20, you stated that a number of leagues have retired the number 51, then say that only one league has retired the number. Please clarify. Obankston (talk) 16:57, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I may have caught it already. The current version says that "a number of North American sports teams" have retired 51, and then go on to note that only teams in the NFL have done so. — Dale Arnett (talk) 17:03, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I like the recent edit you made to the list. It makes the list more accurate. Though, I have a question. I wonder why you add periods to several notes. I am under the impression that incomplete sentence should not have period.—Chris!c/t 04:44, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Baker Street[edit]

Your addition to Baker Street (song) has been reverted. Whenever adding possibly controversial statements about a living person to an article or any other Wikipedia page, please include sources. RadioFan (talk) 03:30, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you're referring to the statement that Ravenscroft claimed to have originated the story that Holness had performed the sax solo, the BBC story about the Holness urban myth—which is already used as a reference—explicitly states that Ravenscroft made that claim. As for the report that Rafferty was still making £80K a year from the song, I cited it explicitly from an obituary in telegraph.co.uk. — Dale Arnett (talk) 04:08, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you could make those references clearer in your edit, that would help. I didn't read that BBC story quite the way you characterized it, as a joke.--RadioFan<
