Christine Elizabeth Abrahamsen
Good day, Gamaliel! I wanted to thank and commend you for your article on Christine Elizabeth Abrahamsen! I also wanted to check with you to see if you planned to submit this article for DYK. If not, let me know and I can submit a hook on your behalf. This would be a wonderful addition for DYK! Thanks again! -- West Virginian (talk) 15:01, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- @West Virginian: Thank you! I didn't think anyone would notice my article. I couldn't think of an interesting hook for DYK but if you have one please submit it with my gratitude. Gamaliel (talk) 18:04, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- Gamaliel, thank you for all your phenomenal contributions, to include this article! I've submitted an initial hook for DYK here: Template:Did you know nominations/Christine Elizabeth Abrahamsen. How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Great paper
I really liked your paper. It was a shame I missed it when it first came out, but glad I was alerted to it by User:Atsme at the badpersons blog forum. To be honest, I think it may be my favorite work ever written about Wikipedia as a phenomenon.

Anne Rice Award | ||
The Anne Rice Award honors editors who have improved Wikipedia's coverage of women writers by creating a biography of a women writer who used a pen name, nom de plume, literary initials, or pseudonym on the title page or by-line of their works in place of their real name. On behalf of WP:WPWW, thank you for creating the biography on Agnes Woods Mitchell (pen name, A. W. WP:AFC Helper News
Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. - Always feels a little strange to post these notices on admins' and long-time editors' talk pages. Of course, you can restore this draft if you want to return to editing it. You should be receiving 5 month reminder notices from FireflyBot but I don't see them here. The bot seems to send out reminders to only about 75% of expiring drafts by my guestimate. It focuses on drafts that go through AFC channels rather than all draft pages.
- Hope you are well these days! Liz Read! Talk! 19:53, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Liz: No worries! Your reminders are helpful because often I've forgotten the drafts even existed after six months. Hope things are good on your end. Gamaliel (talk) 20:53, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
New administrator activity requirement
The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Darren Wershler
Some of the content you added in this edit at Darren Wershler has been tagged as unsourced, and I plan to remove it if it's not cited. As this dates back to before the flood, you likely won't remember much about it. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 00:38, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Mathglot: You will not be surprised to learn I have no memory of this author or article! However, I'm fairly sure I used to own an older edition of this book, so that's likely the source if you were interested in antediluvian archaeology. Gamaliel (talk) 02:16, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

100 DC Women question
Hi Gamaliel, I submitted articles to the 100 DC Women event. I used the small blue button rather than the big blue button for submission, so they didn't wind up on the visible list: Edwilda Gustava Allen Isaac and Ellen Wetherald Ahrens. Is there a way to fix/change this? I'll try my best to do it right going forward. Thanks for looking into this (if you have time). WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:46, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates: Thank you for participating! The list on Wikipedia:100 DC Women has to be updated manually, and I've added your articles to it just now. The Fountain tool (the blue button) keeps track of everything for the contest, the manual list on Wikipedia is just for fun. Gamaliel (talk) 20:51, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Also, I just found Ellen Wetherald Ahrens' death certificate on Ancestry! I'll add it to the article tonight. I'd never heard of the Red Rose Girls before, this is all very fascinating reading, thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 20:55, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Gamaliel! I see now I can just click the "edit source" button. Here's hoping you get 100 articles. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:04, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I hope you can see why I did what I did
It was nothing personal towards you or the edits you made. I simply adore your work on women's biographies. I reverted because a) the current version, albeit I can agree is flawed, is the stable version and removing it wouldn't really bring attention to the issues or improve the article and b) I knew it would provide a reconnection point to start discussions on improvement and finish it this time. The edits you removed were slipped in as we opened discussions about those issues on the talk page. Even so we left the article as it was to avoid edit warring. Now, I hope we get somewhere and finally put this to rest. Thank you so much for your contributions. --ARoseWolf 13:48, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- @ARoseWolf: Thank you for your note. Whatever our differences about procedural matters, I know we have the best interests of the article at heart. Happy holidays!
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Gamaliel!
The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikipedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:20, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Your user talk page protection
Hi,
Your user talk page has been semi-protected since 2016 by Doug Weller. Can you think of any reason why indefinite semi-protection is still necessary, if it ever was? Doug Weller could not. Politrukki (talk) 15:28, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- That isn't true, see my talk page. I wonder why this editor is so concerned. Doug Weller talk 15:51, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Whoa! Where is this hostility coming from? How did I reserve this? Please explain how your response to me specifically justified maintaining the status quo? I can be completely transparent: the idea for requesting unprotection stemmed from seeing the protection info in an edit dialog here and subscribing to the principles outlined in the WP:IPHUMAN essay. Politrukki (talk) 17:28, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- A good reason, I think, is that I do not wish to receive any further death threats on my user talk page. I only wish to edit quietly and unmolested, please respect that. Gamaliel (talk) 15:59, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Online harassment takes a long time to dissipate. Hey Gamaliel, I hope you are doing well. Drmies (talk) 16:42, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 17:32, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Drmies, your name and this situation reminded me of an instance of where you pre-emptively semi-protected, in my opinion against WP:NO-PREEMPT policy, a redirect (if I recall correctly). I asked to unprotect, which you did. No drama. I don't remember if I thanked you back then, but thanks. Politrukki (talk) 17:42, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- I can understand your feelings as a human. I feel sorry for you.So you must think you would still receive threats if your user talk page is unprotected. How long do you think the protection is necessary? Five years? Ten years? Forever? If someone really, really, really would like to persistently harass you, do you think semi-protection would prevent them much? Politrukki (talk) 17:31, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Why should I make it easier for them? Why does this matter to you? Gamaliel (talk) 17:32, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- My reply Doug Weller covers this:
"the idea for requesting unprotection stemmed from ... subscribing to the principles outlined in the WP:IPHUMAN essay"
. I would like to make editing as easy as possible to all, without causing harm to the encyclopedia or its editors. Politrukki (talk) 17:46, 13 February 2023 (UTC)- I treat IP editors with respect when they treat others with respect, and I believe in their right to edit Wikipedia without logging in. Feminism and Folklore Fountain tool
I was wondering, Gamaliel, whether there have been any problems with the articles I have been submitting to the Fountain tool in connection with Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/259. It has been quite some time since any of them have been processed. I have seen that other contributors have been submitting their contributions directly to this address. It's not that I'm interested in the prizes but I think it would be useful to other contributors if they were able to cover some of those I have developed. In other words, would it help if I also submitted my articles to the central F&F site or is there a direct interface between your WiR Fountain tool and the central tallying?--Ipigott (talk) 17:34, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- I apologize, I've been swamped with work and it's cut into my article writing and WIR time. The global organizers told me to set up a local fountain but if they are accepting en.wp articles at the global fountain maybe that's the best approach instead of the local fountain? Gamaliel (talk) 18:09, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- The global fountain does not seem to have been anything like as active as our own WiR. We appear to have created 80 of the 120 articles now listed centrally (which also include our own). I don't know whether they will now be assessed by the other judges or to what extent they are still relying on you. None of my articles added to the global fountain since 18 March have yet been assessed. That means that 30 of the 41 I have created appear to be awaiting assessment. But I suppose everything is under control. For your information, I am not interested in any prize money or book vouchers. I have simply been interested in improving our coverage of women in folklore and have tried to abide by the rules of the contest.--Ipigott (talk) 12:58, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
- I will start assessing them on our local Fountain but I will ask for some help from WIR folks as I am swamped in real life. I'm not one of the international judges so I don't know why they aren't assessing their articles on the global Fountain. Gamaliel (talk) 14:03, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
- Please don't devote time to this if you have other priorities. I see that some of the fountains associated with the Indian languages already list the assessments of many competitors who have created hundreds of articles each. If you wait for a few days, those from the global English-language fountain may also have been assessed. I've also just noticed from a message on this page that the contest has now been extended until 15 April. I'm not sure how important this is to Women in Red. It certainly seem very strange to me to make an extension at this stage.--Ipigott (talk) 15:00, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- Ipigott Congratulations in advance! You are no doubt the winner of this ediathon. Haoreima (talk) 16:03, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- Haoreima: As the contest has now been extended until 15 April, there are now opportunities for you and other competitors to add more articles. As you are also a judge on the central fountain, you should also take into account that I am not interested in any prizes.--Ipigott (talk) 13:46, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
- I'm glad to report, Gamaliel, that all my articles have now been assessed. So no more worries.--Ipigott (talk) 07:30, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

So...
As you may have seen, I'm doing a retrospective of April Fools on Wikipedia, and next issue will start in 2016. Which means covering the whole Trump/Wales article that caused you to get raked over the coals. I've always said that whole situation was overblown, ridiculous, and a bit of a witch hunt, and I still stand by that, but, well, I feel like I should at least talk to you before I try to write anything about it, as I'd imagine it's a bit of a sore point. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.3% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 09:24, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: We pretty much agree on our view of the situation. It's just another illustration of how Wikipedia's ruling cliques are willfully ignorant and utterly impotent when it comes to coping with the weaponization of Wikipedia for political ends. We're in our second decade of Arbcom dealing with Eastern European ethnonationalism, for example. Gamaliel (talk) 18:10, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Women in Red 8th Anniversary | |
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary!
