The Polish National Library dates back to the beginning of the eighteenth century. The tragic fate of its library - from the deportation of the entire library to St. Petersburg, after the defeat of the Kosciuszko Insurrection and loss of independence, until the destruction of the most valuable parts of the recovered items in October 1944 - have become one of the symbols of the losses of Polish culture, forever associated with the idea of the National Library.
The Kościuszko Uprising was an uprising against Imperial Russia and the Kingdom of Prussia in the Commonwealth of Poland and the Prussian partition in 1794. It was a failed attempt to liberate the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Russian influence.
