概要
| 解説 | Helen Hays, of New York's American Museum of Natural History, has been the head of the GGI project since 1969---which is to say, longer than I have been alive. She comes to the island each year in about April and stays with only few and brief excursions back to the mainland until about September, the entirety of the birds' nesting period. While the rest of us drop by for only as long as we can stand the lack of things like plumbing or ice for our drinks, she's there nearly all season long observing and protecting the world's largest tern colony. To all accounts she's had a hell of a career as an ornithologist and conservationist, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. You can only be humbled by that kind of drive. |
