The 2024 Nenggiri by-election is an upcoming by-election for the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly seat of Nenggiri that will be held on 17 August 2024. It was called following the disqualification of incumbent, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim on 19 June 2024 due to his support for the Anwar Ibrahim government.[1][2][3] Mohd Azizi has served as Member of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly for Nenggiri since 2023, alongside as being the MP for Gua Musang.
Background
[edit]Mohd Azizi Abu Naim was first elected to the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly seat of Nenggiri at the 2023 Kelantan state election. Prior to that, he contested and won the federal seat of Gua Musang at the 2022 Malaysian general election, defeating longtime incumbent Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah of Barisan Nasional.
On 7 November 2023, Mohd Azizi declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's government.[4] Due to violating the party's constitution, BERSATU revoked the memberships of his and 5 other politicians who also declared support for Anwar. PN now seeks to vacate the seats of the 6 politicians.[5]
The seat of Nenggiri was declared vacant by the Speaker of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly, Mohd Amar Abdullah, on 19 June 2024, the first seat to be declared vacant following the defections.[6]
Nomination
[edit]Mohd Azizi announced that he would not contest in the election, paving way for others take over the seat from him.[7]
On 11 July 2024, Barisan Nasional (BN), expected to represent the state opposition and federal government, confirmed that it would nominate a candidate to contest in the election.[8]
