Aung Kyaw Moe (Burmese: အောင်ကျော်မိုး; born 1983[1]) is an ethnic Rohingya politician who serves as the Myanmar National Unity Government's Deputy Human Rights Minister.[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Aung Kyaw Moe was born in 1983 in the border town of Maungdaw in Rakhine State, Myanmar. Aung Kyaw Moe worked with numerous NGOs in Myanmar, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Liberia for over 15 years. He founded an NGO in 2017 called the Center for Social Integrity[citation needed]. Witnessing the struggles of marginalized communities from a young age, he was inspired to dedicate his life to advocating for human rights and democracy. He had an elder brother, Than Myint, who was stabbed to death on June 7, 2023..[4]

Government positions[edit]

In his role as Deputy Human Rights Minister within the Myanmar National Unity Government (NUG), Aung Kyaw Moe has been instrumental in promoting human dignity, fostering reconciliation, and building a more inclusive society. He actively engages with both domestic and international stakeholders to amplify the voices of the oppressed and hold perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable.

Following the February 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, the NUG appointed Aung Kyaw Moe as an advisor to the Ministry of Human Rights. His dedication and impactful work led to his promotion to Deputy Minister of Human Rights on June 30, 2023. Aung Kyaw Moe is the first Rohingya person to serve in a ministerial position within the NUG, marking a significant milestone for representation and inclusivity in Myanmar's governance. [5]

Honors and awards[edit]

He received the Fulbright Schuman Award in 2019, along with a human rights award from the government of France. He also won the Global Pluralism Award 2019, the Tomorrow’s Peacebuilder Award from Peace Direct. He has been appointed an Honorary Citizen of Dallas for promoting liberty and community services in Myanmar.
