Ian Rawlings (born 9 March 1959) is an Australian actor. He is best known for his long-running roles in soap operas Sons and Daughters and Neighbours. He also appeared in the short-lived serial The Power, the Passion.

Early life

[edit]

Ian Rawlings was born on 9 March, 1959, in Whyalla, South Australia. He developed a keen interest in betting on the horses from the age of eight when his printer father Ken and grandad Len first took him to the races in Adelaide.

Rawlings initially worked on and off loading trucks at a freight company before his acting career took off.

Career

[edit]

Sons and Daughters

[edit]

Rawlings started out playing the role of the scheming Wayne Hamilton/Morrell in Sons and Daughters. An original cast member of the show, he continued in the role for the show's entire 1982–1987 run.[1]

Hiatus from acting

[edit]

When Sons and Daughters suddenly got axed, Rawlings gave up acting and took on a job with the freight company he previously worked at, this time as a salesman.[2][better source needed]

He also ran Chatterley's, a beauty salon in Homebush, Sydney, and undertook courses with the Australian Council of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, with the idea of working in a gym.[3][better source needed]

Neighbours

[edit]

Two years after switching to sales, Rawlings was offered the role of Philip Martin in Neighbours, which he played from 1992 to 1999 (after having played a brief guest role as Marcus Stone, four months earlier). He briefly reprised this role in episodes commemorating the programme's 20th anniversary in 2005. He made a cameo appearance in the final episode of Neighbours in mid-2022, and again in late 2023, when the series was picked up once again.[4][5] The character had appeared briefly some years before portrayed by Christopher Milne. Before his role Philip Martin, Rawlings had a guest appearance on the show as Marcus Stone.[citation needed]

Personal life

[edit]

Rawlings has most recently worked as a bingo host at Werribee Rotary Club in Victoria.[6][7]
