Joseph Harold Gale (born August 26, 1953)[1] is a former judge of the United States Tax Court.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Princeton University and obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1980. After five years in private practice, he became an adviser to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and later held several positions in service to the United States Senate Committee on Finance until 1996.
He was appointed by President Bill Clinton as a judge on the United States Tax Court on February 6, 1996, for a term ending February 5, 2011. He was reappointed by President Barack Obama on July 8, 2011.[2]
Gale is the first openly gay male appointed to the federal bench.[3]
