[edit]You claim that the New Lights is a term from the Second Great Awakening. 1) The terms Old Lights and New Lights are used to describe critics and awakeners since the First Great Awakening. 2) The dates you provide are 100 years before the 2nd Great Awakening as it is. I'm a history PhD so I have a bit of an expertise here.
OK, I will take at face value your assertion that you have an advanced degree in some area of history (which is I guess not too closely related to US Colonial Era Protestant Clergy ?), though please before responding to this response please do register and respond while logged on as this will help to dispel any assertion that you are a hostile sockpuppeteer.
Have you read any of the material I refered to in my comments ? Have you actually carefully read all of my posts on the subject ?
Rev. Dr. Samuel Finley seems to have been aware of a "Great Awakening" that occured prior to the one the "modern Scholars" seem to call "The Great Awakening". I do not know much about it since I was not at all interested in the family religion until you folks put up this stuff numbering the Awakenings, and I realised that what I had understood until recently was at odds with the scholars. Best guess here is that what We had always refered to as the First great awakening occured in either the very early 1700s, which could mean that Jonathan Edwards might have lead it and that the Finleys etal. in the early mid 1700s got annexed to it later on, which I think is maybe my best guess since I think that pre 1720-c.1750 seems to be an awfully long time for an awkeneing, or possibly that The First Great Awakening actually occurred in the 1600s. There are at least 2 possible places for this that I think might justify a title of "Great Awakening". One possibility is that it centered around what eventually became the witchcraft trials. Whether it ended with them or started with them or if they were just evidence of the furvour that would have to exist for an Awakening to be "declared" ? Well, from what I have read it would seem that there was something going on, and perhaps our modern (or perhaps our post American Revolution) sensibilities may have caused us to deny it, as this "numbered great awakening stuff" has all the flavour of Revisionst History trying to clean stuff up....and maybe even trying to make a British English Language cultural common religious area. However, it may just be that in the 1600s there was lots and lots of that sort of stuff, and it could even refer to my people's coming to America in the 1600s which was often seen as sort of evangelical in and of itself, and the Americans after that had a seriously profound effect on England and on English religion. There seem to have been quite a number of instances of American Religion and American religious figures influencing England in that Century. I would suggest a careful examination of the Rev. Dr. Finley's papers if you really are interested in this subject. John5Russell3Finley 21:07, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Van Horne
[edit]Sir, the changes were in no way vandalism, and in fact were made to be much more consistent with other similar military biographical articles. You have the right to undo my edits, which I think were a significant improvement in style (and corrected some minor mistakes), but do not label my well intended changes as vandalism. I have edited hundreds and hundreds of military articles and resent the implication, sir. No vandalism intended, jusy one veteran military editor's opinion that this article needed some rework to make it better. I will stay with editing Civil War articles, where the style guide is well established and formally agreed to (WP:ACW). Regards! 8th Ohio Volunteers 20:37, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Recently someone has added a template to the discussion section of the article on Gen. Isaac Van Horne claiming that it is under the authority of certain folks. Having grown up with the stories of Gen. Van Horne, I think he is an Ohio Politician and am quite sure that he is a Pennsylvania Politician, and I edited the article to have it conform more closely to the format of the then existing articles about his Military experience Politician Ohio-NorthWestTerritory resident contemporaries. The War of 1812 is a thing in Ohio that has a distinct identity with its own people, and deserves its own grouping (if necessary you can group it with residents of Michigan etal. parts of the old NWT). The above individual (viz: 8th Ohio Volunteers) couldn't spell and his prose was barely readable, and I removed some (but not all) of his additions because of that, and because his phrasing begged questions that I couldn't just answer through adding more info. I couldn't just rewrite his rewrite and add the stuff he forced to have added and still have it make sense so I reverted it. The current formating allows additions without making too much trouble about it. Whereas prose with no headings if done badly can make adding more info more difficult. As a minimum: If you're gonna redo it please spell correctly, as too many of this fine man's other monuments have been mangled recently. John5Russell3Finley 18:09, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Itata incident
[edit]Hi there: I've just been doing some editing over at Itata Incident, and seeing that you've put a lot of work into that page I thought I'd give you a heads-up.
I'm a copy editor; someone stuck a {{copyedit}} tag on the article so I went to take a look. Really, there was very little copy editing that needed doing, but I've added some more cited material and made some minor rearrangements. I'm not, though, an expert on this topic by any means, so perhaps you'd like to check whether I've introduced anything misleading or wrong? Gonzonoir (talk) 11:38, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Cats
[edit]- It is because he is in two categories which are sub-cats of Category:Members of the Ohio General Assembly, in turn a sub category of the Ohio Politicians one. A general rule (but not always), having people in the more general categories is counter-productive - sein gthe wood for the trees. For example he could also be in "State legislators of the United States" "Legislators in the United States " "State political office-holders in the United States" "State legislatures of the United States" "Subnational legislators" "Political office-holders in the United States" "American politicians" "Politicians of North American nations" "American political people" "American people " etc....

Earth Day 2010
[edit]It is fitting that on this the 40th Anniversary of our Newest Neopagan Holiday that we here remember those whose deaths to such a great degree resulted in The United States of America not having a State Religion:
Bridget Bishop · George Burroughs · Martha Carrier · Martha Corey · Mary Eastey · Sarah Good · Elizabeth Howe · George Jacobs, Sr. · Susannah Martin · Rebecca Nurse · Alice Parker (Salem) · Mary Parker · John Proctor · Ann Pudeator · Wilmot Redd · Margaret Scott · Samuel Wardwell · Sarah Wildes · John Willard· Giles Corey
Perhaps few of them would be happy at having a pentagram attached to their biography. My thought was that the Pentagram was more a sign of a greatful group showing its appreciation for their sacrifice, than any sort of coopting of them as founders as has so often seemed the case in much of the modern media especially on TV. My own personal feeling is that the cross and a designation of this as a feature of Calvinist religion just didn't fit the facts enough to be more than a foot note somewhere, and that perhaps including them in the Christianity group was even insulting to these matryrs-albeit unwilling ones "to religious freedom".

Family
Ancestry
He is the eldest son of Bernard Van Horne and his first wife Sarah Van Pelt Van Horne. He is descended of several Dutch families who came to America when New York was New Netherlands. His father's family have been often, and debatably, been identified with the European Noble Family of that name. His paternal immigrant ancestor Christian Barentsen van Hoorn had a house lot at Wall Street and Broadway (now part of Trinity Churchyard) and was Fire Marshal of Manhattan in the 1650s before moving to the area of Wilmington Delaware aka South River. His grandmother Alice Sleght Van Horn may have been descended of Catherine Trico Rapalgie one of whose daughters was reputed to be the first white child born in New Netherland. He is also the great great great grand nephew of Peter Stuyvesant.
Children
He married Dorothy widow of Isaac Marple (already mother of 2 sons John Jones Marple and David Jones Marple). Isaac and Dorothy Marple Van Horne had 11 children: Dorothy Jane = Peter van Woglom, Isaac van Horne (perhaps a 1st cousin ?); Sarah; Mary (Polly) = Jeffrey Price (widower with a daughter); Cpt Isaac Van Horne Jr. (2d Battle of Fort Mackinac, War of 1812); Samuel; Eliza Nann = Dr. John E. Hamm Col., & Marshall of Ohio (War of 1812); Patience = Harry Safford (a silversmith in Putnam, OH); Cynthia; Bernard (in 1826 his successor as receiver of public monies at Zanesville) Benjamin Franklin; Bvt. Maj. Joseph Jefferson Van Horne (U.S.-Mexican War).
Military career
He was elected ensign of a company of militia in 1775, and appointed ensign in the Continental Army by the committee of safety in January 1776, assigned to Capt. John Beatty's Company in Col. Magaw's Regiment.
He was taken prisoner at the fall of Fort Washington and held as a prisoner of war from November 1776 to May 1778 when he was exchanged.
He served as first lieutenant, captain lieutenant, and captain until the close of the American Revolutionary War.
He was an early member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
He was LTC Commanding 1st Reg 2d Brig Ohio Militia from 1808-1810.
He was Adjutant General of Ohio during the War of 1812 serving in that post from 1810-1819.
Politics and Business
He apprenticed as a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He was justice of the peace for Solebury Township Bucks Co. PA for several years, and served as coroner of Bucks County four years.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1796 and 1797. Immediately following his term in the Pennsylvania House he was elected as a Republican (aka Democratic-Republican, Jeffersonian, or "old Republican") to the Seventh and Eighth Congresses.
He moved to Zanesville, Ohio, in 1805 after Pres. Thomas Jefferson appointed him receiver of the land office at Zanesville. He held that office until December 1826 when he resigned in favor of his son Bernard.
He and his son in law Dr. John Hamm founded the [[White Glass Co.] of Zanesville Ohio in 1815, of which he was President.
He was President of The Second Federal Bank of Zanesville.
He was involved in a number of early Zanesville businesses, and was a large landholder.
He was head of a political faction in the 2d Capital of Ohio.
Miscellaneous
After he moved to Zanesville his first residence was a white Clapboard house on Pine St., built for him by his nephew, which was locally known as "the White House."
Although originally interred in the family plot at Pine St. Cemetery, still occupied by the grave of his son Lt. Isaac Vanhorne, the will of his daughter Sarah provided for the movement of the bodies of her father and mother to a plot next to his son Maj. Joseph Jefferson Vanhorne in the then newly opened, larger, and more fashionable Woodlawn Cemetery.
One of the bequests in his will was a donation to the American Colonization Society.

Boots on the Ground
[edit]Dr. Biden’s biography seems to have a chance of being a highly changeable thing, and my Wikipedia skills were good last decade and barely competent now. My apologies here, as my editing was imperfect. My best guess is all 3: Biden Foundation Boots on the Ground etc may be of some interest in the future. Could some kind editor maybe add articles on these 3 organizations or at least put together a disambiguation page for Boots on the Ground? I will make an attempt to learn how to do this, but my guess is somebody with more skills than I may see this thing before I can do anything, and maybe you can fix it ? Thanks in advance for your tolerance... John5Russell3Finley (talk) 16:08, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
