Metal Gear canon timeline Rising

Although the main game and the Bladewolf DLC took place during 2018, the Sam DLC was strongly implied to have taken place two years before the events of the main game (as it details how Sam got involved with Desperado and World Marshall's Operation Tecumseh, which Sam's final recording to Bladewolf specifically mentioned was being planned for two years), meaning 2016. Weedle McHairybug (talk) 16:39, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The setting of the Jetstream chapter is never exactly stated in-game though and Sam could've joined Senator Armstrong at any point between those two years when Operation Tecumseh. Putting 2016 on that timeline just reeks of original research. Jonny2x4 (talk) 18:19, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, Sam's exact words were "Two years I've been working towards this [Operation Tecumseh], and on the last day blondie [Raiden] has me doubting the whole thing." That implies that he had joined up two years prior to the events of the game. Weedle McHairybug (talk) 01:22, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Game Gear

Wow. I haven't been part of what was then called the Computers and video games (CVG) for probably at least eight years by now. My views on WP:PRIMARY and page moves have changed a lot since then - see, for instance, that my original example of using Nintendo GameCube isn't valid anymore since it is now simply at GameCube. Also back then there were raging wars about Lost Levels vs. SMB2 Japan and of course the oft-resurrected Genesis vs. Mega Drive, to the point where someone (bwhahaha) actually moved it to Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. hbdragon88 (talk) 07:05, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I really only called you out since you were involved in the previous page move discussion, since I felt it was the right thing to do to ask for your input to see if you're still interested. At any rate, I'm surprised the page hasn't been moved already, given how it has a consensus in favor of the page move. Most of my edits have been regarding official naming conventions regarding gaming and computing platforms, as I told another editor. I generally tend to prefer official conventions. I always thought it was odd that the Nintendo GameCube page was moved to GameCube. Jonny2x4 (talk) 07:35, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Mega Drive" based on region published

As mentioned prior, and because I don't want to get over the three revert rule on this, the name that is inserted into the infobox and generally the text comes down to the kind of English, British, American, Australian or other cases, which is again defined by the region of the developer. 3D Realms, in this case, is and was based in the United States, wherefore it comes to American English and with that also to "Sega Genesis" rather than "Sega Mega Drive". That it was exclusive to Brazil for about two decades takes no influence on the name. Again, in order to not break the three revert rule, please roll back the edit yourself. Cheers, Lordtobi () 18:16, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Did 3D Realms actually developed the MD/GEN version in-house? I always got the impression it was outsourced. At any rate, the game was only sold and made specifically for the Brazilian market, so I feel it should be referred as a Mega Drive game and not a Genesis game, considering only the Brazilian version was officially licensed by Sega, whereas the "worldwide" release was unlicensed and made a few decades after the fact. Even the game's internal code (having access to the ROM file myself) only makes reference to the Mega Drive. It's the same reason why we call Star Tropics an NES game and not a Famicom one, even though it was Japanese developed. Jonny2x4 (talk) 16:36, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All versions of Duke3D were technically developed by 3D Realms, merely ported by others. According to the credits, it was apparently ported by Tec Toy, but since it was not a different version, thus not an original development as considered by that exact guideline, we will have to go by that it was developed in the US and just ported in Brazil. Take, for example, Bram Stoker's Dracula, which had a bunch of different platform-specific versions developed. Due to technical limitations at the time, there was no or limited porting, and therefore the infobox |developer= field does not look that well, but is entierly correct. The reason StarTropics does not use Famicom is [should be] based off concensus as "Japanese English" does not exist, and article editors would have to discuss and decide wether to use NES or Famicom. I'm not sure if there is a specific guideline on that, as I am not editing Japanese games often, so looks around in the infobox guidelines or on the WT:VG talk pages. StarTropics does, however, seem to not have that much of a cleaned-up infobox either, as it gives us dates for the Virtual Consoles releases, which are prohibited by the "emulated" guideline of the same page. Lordtobi () 16:52, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're arguing semantics regarding over who developed the Mega Drive version of Duke Nukem 3D. At any rate, 3D Realms doesn't seem to have any direct involvement with the development of MD version besides licensing the rights to TecToy to produce it. Regardless of the actual developer (original or conversion-wise), my point is that it was a Brazil-exclusive for many years and the recent worldwide Genesis version is pretty much a glorified repro (it still has the TecToy branding in the code if I'm not mistaken). I feel it really should be identified as a Mega Drive game, since that was how the Genesis was called in Brazil, or at least a Mega Drive/Genesis game, but I digress. I'll just leave the article as it is until further notice. Jonny2x4 (talk) 05:25, 8 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese box arts of Dragon Quest Famicom series

This Japanese front cover is no longer worth including since the Japanese Dragon Quest IV front cover is deleted. Shall I remove it from the article and then request speedy deletion? --George Ho (talk) 04:31, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also, what about File:Famicom Dragon Quest II packaging (front).jpg and File:Famicom Dragon Quest III packaging (front).jpg? --George Ho (talk) 04:34, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with your assertion that they're "not worth including", but then again I was never in agreement that the Famicom Dragon Quest IV packaging image should've been deleted in the first place. Personally I much rather keep them as they are for now. Jonny2x4 (talk) 08:48, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The box arts of Dragon Quest V are under discussion at FFD. So is the PC Engine re-release of Snatcher. George Ho (talk) 07:48, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jonny, shall we revisit the DQ/DW issue? I see your passion to have the Famicom cover arts included, but I don't know how you communicate with others. I'll try to contact the administrator who deleted those images on your behalf... Otherwise, you can contact that person yourself? George Ho (talk) 19:30, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, but the last time I tried to argue for using the JP cover artwork on the Dragon Quest 1-4 articles on WP:VG didn't go very well. To be honest, I don't think the other editors would've cared that much about the changed cover artwork or even noticed the change if a certain "1337 gamer" didn't act so pedantic over guidelines and kept reverting my changes, forcing me to bring the topic to them in the first place. Jonny2x4 (talk) 08:32, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want to talk to the administrator, Explicit, who deleted the images per FFD? Or shall I? George Ho (talk) 11:25, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you can convince Explicit that would be great, because I really have no idea what to write to him other than it makes no sense to use one title for the page and another title for packaging art on the infobox. On a related note, I think the DQ7 cover artwork might also need replacing Jonny2x4 (talk) 07:23, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the results would be the same. The previous discussion proves that the result would be the same. The consensus would stick to covers that are meant for English-speaking countries. I did request a relisting at Explicit's page, but then I rescinded the request. You can campaign a rule change if you want. We have been discussing multiple versions of the video game at the WT:WPVG#What cover and screenshots to use when multiple versions of a game exist, especially Japan-only original version and localized rereleases. Satoshi Tajiri / Tsunekazu Ishihara

I wasn't aware that the image I placed in the Satoshi Tajiri article was not, in fact, of Tajiri. A search on Google Images brings up photos of Ishihara when searching "satoshi tajiri", and the image file in question is misleadingly titled "File:Satoshi-tajiri.jpg". I apologise for the mistake. I've made a request on Wikimedia Commons that the name be changed. Cheers! –Matthew - (talk) 01:17, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • It seems to be a mistake that was propagated by English-language websites since they have a bad habit of not fact-checking their sources (mostly due to language barrier), so they end up spreading misinformation as a result. At any rate, googling the Satoshi Tajiri's proper Japanese name (田尻 智) will end up showing the actual person in most of the image results. I'm thinking of using this recent photograph from the official Game Freak facebook that was posted last February for the article, but I'm not sure in what fair-use rationale it fits in. Jonny2x4 (talk) 01:38, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please eliminate the bullet points in the Konami article

Look, I understand that the article looks unreadable to you, but you have to get rid of the bullet points. They are not the format for articles. Either you find a way to turn then into paragraph, or I'll deal with the edit myself. Iftekharahmed96 (talk) 09:23, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The point of writing an article in prose is so that you don't list every minute detail of a subject, but instead summarize the most interesting or relevant bits of information. But you didn't actually do that, you instead removed the bullet points, but the information is still organized in a list format (i.e. "January 1986 - This happened.", "February 21, 1987 - This subsidiary of the company named in bold font was established."), only now it's all thrown in into a bunch of long paragraphs. You're supposed to rewrite the information so that the transition from one piece of data to the next feels a lot more natural and understandable (e.g. "During the 1980's, Konami started publishing video game software for the MSX and NES platforms. Then in the 1990's they made games for the Super NES, PC Engine and Genesis").

I'm not going to remove the bullet-points from the article, but you're free to change it back to your liking if you want to (I'm not going to revert your changes again, since you seem to feel strongly enough about it to come to my talk page and ask me to change it for you on the subject line). At any rate, if you're not going to rewrite the text like you said you would, I might do it myself sometime during the week, if not tonight. Let me know what you think. Jonny2x4 (talk) 20:21, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I completely understand your argument, and it's a valid one. It is clearer in bullet points, however, that's just not the ideal format for Wikipedia. Konami is a well known Japanese video game developer and publisher, and having it all in bullet point is really awkward compared to articles like Sega, Square Enix, Capcom and Bandai Namco. I'll leave you to reformatting in paragraphs, the sooner it's accomplished, the better. Iftekharahmed96 (talk) 11:24, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. At any rate, most of the information on the history section seems to had been copied verbatim from an old version of the company's official corporate history page(specifically this one), since a lot of the items listed aren't present in the current version. A serious rewrite is in order. Jonny2x4 (talk) 20:33, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jonny, I am rewriting Policenauts and was wondering if you could take a look at it and offer any comments like you did with Snatcher? Big Boss' naming section

Isn't that section a bit unnecessary? I mean, in a previous section we have Kojima pointing out about how Naked Snake decided to use the title of Big Boss until Peace Walker (though it was retconned in Ground Zeroes as he is once again called Snake). It might be better if those section happened to related more with real world information instead like the reason why Solid Snake's is named David and his Pliskin alias or almost most Raiden's names. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 14:33, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's exactly my intention. I'm under the impression most people misunderstand the reason why Big Boss was still called Snake in Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. He is basically treated more like a different incarnation of Snake rather than being a character by his own right, hence why most of the promotional material and the games themselves just labels him "Snake".(such as when Big Boss is introduced in Ground Zeroes, where they introduce him as "Snake: The hero once known as Big Boss" or something to that effect). Even within The Phantom Pain, with its body double/self-insert twist, they make very little attempt to distinguish the two incarnations of the characters, with the leaked script for the game often referring to the original Big Boss as "the real Snake." Sharp Nintendo Television

Hi Jonny2x4, I just noticed this edit that you'd made and I had a question about it. Are you certain that the term "game television" is a licensed product name and that it isn't just a descriptive term? I ask because the term sounds so generic that I would be very surprised if it could support a trademark.

If we wanted to include this expression, my gut instinct would be to change the article from this:

  • The Sharp Nintendo Television (often described as [...]) is a television produced by Sharp Corporation.

to

  • "The Sharp Nintendo Television (often described as [...]) is a game television produced by Sharp Corporation."

Would that be a good idea? -Thibbs (talk) 12:23, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The "Sharp Nintendo Television" is just a nickname, since the actual product doesn't have any Nintendo-branding despite being an officially-licensed product. The service manual simply calls it the Game Television and the bundle controllers have "Game Television" marking instead of the actual Nintnedo logo, despite being otherwise identical to the standard NES-004 controllers (they even have the same parts number). Even the actual television just says "Game Television" on the front. Jonny2x4 (talk) 16:52, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah OK, I think I see. Thanks for the links. Do you know if there are any secondary RSes that use that term or is it only seen in the primary sources? -Thibbs (talk) 23:39, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If it's secondary sources you're looking for, there's this Game Informer article if that's enough for a reference. Jonny2x4 (talk) 01:34, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
