Hi, I am reviewing some content on the wp:en April 1961 page (16 April), where a widely-distributed part of a Spanish language speech of Fidel Castro is quoted. At present, no English translation is provided. I think I have found the most accurate Spanish version, from the Granma website:

• "Compañeros obreros y campesinos, esta es la Revolución socialista y democrática de los humildes, con los humildes y para los humildes. • Two machine translations, below:

• I know very little Spanish, and I only have a pocket Spanish-English dictionary, but my crude interpretation is as follows: "Fellow workers and peasants, this is the socialist and democratic revolution of the humble, with the humble, and for the humble. And with this humble revolution, we wish to give a humble life to the humble."(peterwd)
• So far, I have been unable to locate a convincing English version (eg today borrowed Volker Skierka Castro biography). I would be most grateful if you can help find a reliable and uncontroversial translation that can be quoted in wp:en, or perhaps suggest a translation of your own. Update. I amended the article as planned, but now I have found an English version (but not the Spanish) in Fernandez, Jose Ramon. 2001. Playa Giron/Bay of Pigs: Washington's First Military Defeat in the Americas, p. 56: "Companero workers and peasants, this is the socialist and democratic revolution of the working people, with the working people, and for the working people. [Applause] And for this revolution of the working people, by the working people, and for the working people we are prepared to give our lives." The publisher's note says: "This book is being published by Pathfinder simultaneously in English and Spanish. The 1961 speeches and documents included here have either been out of print or not easily accessible in either language for several decades. In English some are appearing for the first time, and all are published in new and more accurate translations. The April 16 speech by Fidel Castro has been translated into English for the first time; the April 23 report to the Cuban people on the battle of Playa Giron has been newly translated, and the May 1 speech was previously published only in an unreliable English text prepared by the U.S. government's Federal Broadcast Information Service..."

In the amended page, I have continued with the truncated version of the speech, to suit the summarised nature of the day entries, but I intend to use a fuller version elsewhere, perhaps in Wikiquote. Do you still want to mediate your issues? You had two, and one of them is now moot because I replaced the infobox with a case infobox that doesn't include the names of the participants. So, the only thing left to "mediate" is the verdict. The verdict is now mentioned in two places in the article, in the lead and in the body. It has to be mentioned in the body because it's so obviously important, and the lead is a summary of the highlights of the body, and, clearly, the verdict is a highlight. So, the only thing left to discuss is whether it deserves its own section. As I said on the Talk page, there's no existing section to put it into (I didn't create the strange structure of the article). It doesn't belong in the prosectuion or defense sections, so where would you put it?--Bbb23 (talk) 00:52, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You need to take a look at User:VoA, where it clearly says that it was a test account of User:VoiceOfAll, who also happens to be a MediaWiki developer (as well as an admin and CU, but that's beyond the point). You nominated this as having no context. At the time you nominated it, it began "The Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre (HRS) in Essex, England, is a mixed-sex comprehensive school for ages 11-18.[2] It is situated in the rural Essex countryside, occupying approximately 35 acres (140,000 m2) just to the north of Great Dunmow. A Sports and Leisure Centre, shared with the local community, is located on site. HRS is a specialist Humanities College with approximately 1500 pupils." That is a clear and specific context so it is hard to understand how you could possibly have believed this nomination was appropriate. Please be more careful in the future when nominating articles. If you use "Twinkle" in your edits, then go to the page, and, in the Twinkle toolbar (it's normally a dropdown menu starting witht eh letters "TW" if you use the "Vector" skin), click the link named "RPP". This will get you a diologue box for requesting a page protection for the article or the talk page (or you could do both). This means that no one can edit that page. Hi,
How are you feeling about the medcab case so far? I'm concerned that it has been going off track. On one hand, it's good that the parties involved have all sat down at the table and are discussing it civilly (you'd be surprised how many medcab cases don't even get that far). However, I think it's unhelpful to talk in terms of deadline dates for submissions, or shutting down discussion when you're not around, or escalation to arbcom at this stage. The mediation cabal is generally quite informal and easygoing; a "lightweight" process (a deliberate contrast to things like arbcom). Most experienced wikipedians are fairly good at discussing things and working towards consensus/compromise if given the right conditions; a good mediator could just be a squirt of WD40 in the mechanism. Of course, if somebody in a dispute is obstructive/uncooperative, we might have to reach for a crowbar, but I don't think that's the case yet with string theory. bobrayner (talk) 03:50, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. This edition The Olive Branch is focusing on a 2nd dispute resolution RfC. Two significant proposals have been made. Below we describe the background and recent progress and detail those proposals. Please review them and follow the link at the bottom to comment at the RfC. We need your input!

Background Until late 2003, Jimmy Wales was the arbiter in all major disputes. After the Mediation Committee and the Arbitration Committee were founded, Wales delegated his roles of dispute resolution to these bodies. In addition to these committees, the community has developed a number of informal processes of dispute resolution. At its peak, over 17 dispute resolution venues existed. Disputes were submitted in each venue in a different way. Due to the complexity of Wikipedia dispute resolution, members of the community were surveyed in April 2012 about their experiences with dispute resolution. In general, the community believes that dispute resolution is too hard to use and is divided among too many venues. Many respondents also reported their experience with dispute resolution had suffered due to a shortage of volunteers and backlogging, which may be due to the disparate nature of the process. An evaluation of dispute resolution forums was made in May this year, in which data on response and resolution time, as well as success rates, was collated. This data is here. Progress so far Leading off from the survey in April and the evaluation in May, several changes to dispute resolution noticeboard (DRN) were proposed. Rather than using a wikitext template to bring disputes to DRN, editors used a new javascript form. This form was simpler to use, but also standardised the format of submissions and applied a word limit so that DRN volunteers could more easily review disputes. A template to summarise, and a robot to maintain the noticeboard, were also created. As a result of these changes, volunteers responded to disputes in a third of the time, and resolved them 60% faster when compared to May. Successful resolution of disputes increased by 17%. Submissions were 25% shorter by word count.(see Dispute Resolution Noticeboard Statistics - August compared to May) Outside of DRN other simplification has taken place. The Mediation Cabal was closed in August, and Wikiquette assistance was closed in September. Nevertheless, around fifteen different forums still exist for the resolution of Wikipedia disputes. Proposed changes Given the success of the past efforts at DR reform, the current RFC proposes we implement: 1) A submission gadget for every DR venue tailored to the unique needs of that forum. Similar to the one that was deployed, with great success, to the DRN. Structured based on the specific issues most commonly dealt with at each forum. Designed to improve the quality of requests for DR and the efficiency of DR at that forum. Applicable at following noticeboards: Dispute resolution, Neutrality, Reliable Sources, Original Research, Biographies of Living Persons, Notability noticeboard, Fringe theories, Conflict of Interest, Ethnic and cultural conflicts, External links, Third opinion, Mediation Committee, Arbitration Committee. Forms will merely fill out any existing templates (such as Arbcom's) and create a markup-free form in line with specific noticeboard practices otherwise. Example form fields: What pages are involved? What users are involved? What is the issue? What resolution is desired? 2) A universal dispute resolution wizard, accessible from Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. This wizard would ask a series of structured questions about the nature of the dispute. It would then determine to which dispute resolution venue a dispute should be sent. If the user agrees with the wizard's selection, s/he would then be asked a series of questions about the details of the dispute (for example, the usernames of the involved editors). The wizard would then submit a request for dispute resolution to the selected venue, in that venue's required format (using the logic of each venue's specialized form, as in proposal #1). The wizard would not suggest a venue which the user has already identified in answer to a question like "What other steps of dispute resolution have you tried?". Similar to the way the DRN request form operates, this would be enabled for all users. A user could still file a request for dispute resolution manually if they so desired. Coding such a wizard would be complex, but the DRN gadget would be used as an outline. Once the universal request form is ready (coded by those who helped create the DRN request form) the community will be asked to try out and give feedback on the wizard. The wizard's logic in deciding the scope and requirements of each venue would be open to change by the community at any time. 3) Additionally, we're seeking any ideas on how we can attract and retain more dispute resolution volunteers.

To follow up on the first survey in April, I am conducting a second survey to learn more about dispute resolution volunteers - their motivations for resolving disputes, the experiences they've had, and their ideas for the future. Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote. Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. End of Year Events from the Guild of Copy Editors The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events: The December 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best December copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC). Voting is in progress for the November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not. From Sunday 16 December to Saturday 22 December, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} from January 2012. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded. January 2013 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2012. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012", and "Longest article". Historian, good to talk to you again. Reopening a closed request at DRN requires that the tags which were removed at the time of closing be restored, else the listing breaks the bot that maintains the page or, alternatively, the lack of the tags will cause the bot to archive the listing even though you intended to reopen it. (You may need to also renotify the parties, if it was closed for very long, just in case they saw the close and aren't watching the DRN page any more, though I don't think this one wasn't closed long enough to have to bother with that.) Also, leaving a stale dispute open for 12 days after it was opened is far, far longer than the standard ordinarily applied at DRN, which is about 3-5 days. I've restored the top tags for you, and it's up to you to decide how long you want to leave it open, but there's reason to be concerned that at least one editor is using the DRN listing as an excuse to maintain the status of the article without choosing to weigh in at DRN. If a filing is made and no one at all participates, the filing can be closed after 48 hours. However, an additional 24 hours can be given along with a request on the case filing itself.
