Zubir Ahmed (born July 1981)[citation needed] is a Scottish Labour politician and transplant surgeon[1] who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow South West since the 2024 general election.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Ahmed was the eldest of five children, born to Pakistani parents who had come to Scotland in 1963.[3] He grew up in Govanhill, Glasgow and won a scholarship to attend Hutchesons' Grammar School, an independent school in Glasgow.[4][3]

In 2005, Ahmed graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School (BSc MBChB) where he was contemporaries with Anas Sarwar, having both attended the same school as well.[5] He gained a diploma in laparoscopic surgery from the University of Strasbourg in 2008. He went on to complete a Masters in Evidence Based Healthcare and Cochrane Review Methodology at University College London in 2012, a PhD in Transplantation at King's College London in 2019, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Strathclyde in 2020. He also held a fellowships at the European Board of Surgery and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.[6]

Medical career[edit]

Ahmed became a transplant and vascular specialist, working as a surgeon in Glasgow for 20 years.[3]

Political career[edit]

Ahmed stood as the Labour candidate for Glasgow Pollok in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, and lost against the incumbent Scottish National Party (SNP)'s Humza Yousaf.[5] He was selected as the Labour candidate for the Glasgow South West constituency for the 2024 general election and needed a 6.43% swing, from the SNP to Labour, to win the seat.[1] He won the election by 3,285 votes over the previous SNP MP, Chris Stephens.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Ahmed is married to a respiratory doctor and has two children.[7][8]
