The University of Baguio Science High School (UBSHS) is a private, nonsectarian science high school. It is the science department of the University of Baguio and was founded in 1963, predating the Philippine Science High School which was established in 1964. The school is considered a pioneer among private science high schools in Asia.[1][2]

History[edit]

In 1963, a special examination was administered to sixth grade students from the City. The passers of this exam were put in a Special Science Scholars Section (SSSS). This promulgated an annual scholarship examination that formally established the UB Science High School as an institution of specialized secondary education. The school's pioneer batch graduated in 1967.

In 1970, the school received its legal recognition.

In lieu of the implementation of the Aquino Administration's K to 12 program in 2013, the school has since established the Senior High School department which exclusively offers the Academic Track with the following strands: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy, Business & Management (ABM), and Humanities & Social Sciences (HUMSS).

Student Life, Cultures & Traditions[edit]

One of the things that make Science High students stand out is the uniform, specifically the gray wrap-around skirt with its exposed red streak donned by the female students.

Scholars address each other as "ading" (gender non-specific, Ilocano term for younger sibling) and "manong/manang" (gender-specific Ilocano term for older sibling) as a sign of respect. Certain Latin terms and phrases have also been imbued in the students' vocabularies such as haustus which refer to their morning and afternoon snack breaks, and festina lente which means to make haste slowly.

The school's official student government is called the Student Parliamentary Government (SPG) and is composed of ministers. Student Class Advisers (SCAs) are a selected group of seniors that supervise classrooms during Sacred Silence and Monitoring Period before official classes start or resume.

Certain annual practices make up the Science High tradition and have been practiced since their conception, most of which were by Sir Emmett Brown Asuncion, an honored pillar of the school.

Event Description
Anima Angelorum Also known as the Angels and Souls Day and is held during the first week of the new school year. An Angel (a senior) and a Soul (a freshman or transferee) are paired and introduced to each other as a form of a peer-support friendship.
Youth Development Training (YDT) Sporsfest A highly-awaited program where students compete in bench cheering as the main event. Every school year, a freshman is permanently assigned to a team in which they will compete for until the 9th Grade with their own traditional cheers and variations. Seniors become a separate team and come up with their official batch name and cheers.
Christmas Cantata The UB Christmas Cantata is a university-wide program and is one of Baguio City's highly anticipated events after Saint Louis University's Lantern Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting. UB Science High's participation encompass roles in the main cast, scripture reading, and most importantly the choir in which the rest of the student body sings the Gregorian chants for the opening and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus for the closing.
Red Carpet Ceremony The epitome of the UB Science High culture and is held on the night of graduation. Graduating students who maintained adequate academic performance and noteworthy conduct are privileged to join the ceremony and walk the Red Carpet, a symbolic item in which every graduating batch tufts and contributes to the main carpet.
