Draft:county of Achalm

[edit]

I saw that you went through and got rid of a copyedit on my draft page for the county of Achalm. I have noticed that some people question the historical accuracy of Achalm existing as I have stated it in the entry, and I was wondering what your take on it is.

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

I don't understand why people dot "etc", but I suppose they're welcome to do so. For me (and not only me), the dot is mere clutter. Am I so very wrong? -- Hoary (talk) 02:43, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. As with every abbreviation there comes a period after etc., and despite what the guardian's internal style guide says, all I can find on Google is that one should use a period after etc. By the way, etc. without a dot is on the Wikipedia list of common misspellings as
<Typo word="Etc." find="\b(?:and\s+)?([eE])(?:tc\b(?<!/etc)([^\.\w])|ct\b\.*)" replace="$1tc.$2"/> <!--avoid /etc the Unix file directory-->
and thus it's not just my opinion only. Killarnee (talk) 05:56, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, and the dot is so necessary that it should be added to instances of "etc" within other users' signed comments? Conceivably yes it is; but if you could shed some light on the mysteries (or simply my incomprehension) described in Draft talk:Celebrating Matsu, that'd be so much more welcome. -- Hoary (talk) 07:35, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I'm seeing it now first, it was your comment and not the actual article. This was not intended but the regex currently is not able to differentiate between this and as many typos as I remove, mistakes can sometimes happen.
I would be happy if I could help but I do not speak Chinese too. I think that Lky269 created several drafts covering similar topics and all got declined because of missing reliable sources is even more mysterious. If anyone can shed light on this, then probably only Lky269 can?
Have a nice day Killarnee (talk) 11:18, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted

[edit]

Hello, Killarnee. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Useful links:

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! * Pppery * it has begun... 17:54, 24 March 2024 (UTC) * Pppery * it has begun... 17:54, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Killarnee. Regarding your closure of this move request, the 1982 TV program is the most likely primary topic for "Today (Australian TV program)" and should be kept there, having aired for 44 years in comparison to the 1960 TV program's one year. Would you be able to either move the 1982 article back or reopen the RM discussion? Happily888 (talk) 04:49, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today (1960 TV program) is an Australian television program too, so disambiguation by country wouldn't fully disambiguate these two articles but by year does. Or do you mean something different? And because of the primary, naming the article just today doesn't work either, so the article needs disambiguation either way.
@Pppery: What do you think? Killarnee (talk) 17:12, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I'm against partial disambiguation in pretty much every situation, including this one, but the other viewpoint is not inherently unreasonable. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:14, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Killarnee. Thank you for your creation of the page on Nordweststadt (Karlsruhe), though seems like a part of the page was translated from de:Nordweststadt (Karlsruhe). I just wanted to drop a quick note that it is while it's perfectly allowed to reuse content between pages, the licence technically requires attributing the original article. This is usually done with just an edit summary identifying the source wiki, and a link For example: Content in this edit is translated from the existing German Wikipedia article at [[:de:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution. Or, if you are using the Wikipedia:Content translation tool, it will make this edit summary for you automatically. You can also add a {{translated page}} template to the talk page. You can read more abut attributing translations at WP:TFOLWP. Thanks! Alpha3031 (tc) 15:10, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have neither translated the article nor would the few sentences that make up the article qualify for copyright. I've had this discussion before because I thought the same as you. Killarnee (talk) 16:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:IOS 18.jpg.

This file is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the file description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. Hajoon0102 💬 22:53, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hajoon0102: Where is the image within the image? This image was officially published by Apple for newspapers etc., just read the license I included in the file description. And all the icons on the image are Apple's property only. So your tag doesn't apply here. Killarnee (talk) 23:22, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for my misunderstanding. Hajoon0102 💬 00:01, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What article are you talking about? Killarnee (talk) 22:28, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Double Disc Album and Horror-Core. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:29, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I redirected because these articles already exist. And keeping Double Disc Album is technically not useful as the redirect Double disc album already exists and MediaWiki isn't case sensitive; for Horror-Core I searched but couldn't find any sources for this spelling. But I'm fine with WP:RfD. Killarnee (talk) 22:35, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You approved the AfC submission List of investigational autism and pervasive developmental disorder drugs recently, which is one of many drafts submitted by the prolific IP editor 76.174.0.57. The list is clearly worthwhile but I do note that it has 89 external links in its main sections and only three actual references. Is this appropriate for a list article? It seems to go against the guidance at WP:ELLIST. I'm not sure what to do here and would value your advice. Some of the links may be totally unnecessary, since there are valid wikilinks to existing articles. In other cases, it might be better to convert the EL to cites, and if so I'm open to doing that. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:10, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are other lists which have the same pattern of external links so I wouldn't remove these links without further discussion. But I indeed don't think these links are useful, if someone wants information there are the linked articles. Killarnee (talk) 13:32, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link to the other lists. It seems this is a bit of a minefield, so I'm going to raise the issue with the pharmacology project to see what people think. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Now at WT:WikiProject Pharmacology#External links in list articles if you wish to comment. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:55, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Mike. Killarnee (talk) 18:46, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Turnbull: Just wanted to note this, from the AfC reviewing guidelines: "Avoid declining an article because the references contain bare URLs or other reference formatting problems. Instead, run reFill (and check its output!) or tag the article with {{cleanup-link rot|date=October 2024}} or {{citation style|date=October 2024}}." (quoted from WP:AFCSTANDARDS). So Killarnee was following the guidelines in approving the page. In my own case, I had figured that the page could be tagged with a relevant clean-up template or that someone else with the know-how could fill the bare URLs. Thanks. – 76.174.0.57 (talk) 22:17, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
