Proposed blackout in protest of RA 10175[edit]

Dear LionFosset,

Greetings!

As a Filipino Wikipedian, I hope you are aware of the passage of Republic Act No. 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which was signed into law by President Benigno Aquino III on September 12, 2012. Currently, there is a discussion on the Tambayan, the noticeboard for Philippines-related topics, about a proposed blackout of the English Wikipedia in the Philippines in order to protest the passage of RA 10175, similar to the blackout against SOPA and PIPA held earlier this year. I feel that your input on the subject will definitely help in the discussion.

Please feel free to participate in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Tambayan Philippines#The Cybercrime Prevention Act, and I hope your input will help the Filipino Wikipedia community determine which is the best course of action against this law. Similarly, we hope to get as much input from as many Wikipedians as possible.

Thank you and maraming salamat po!

Kind regards,

The article Marcelito Pomoy has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. -- Patchy1 REF THIS BLP 02:10, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, LionFosset. I removed the speedy delete notice from Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang because the reasoning didn't seem to me to be consistent with WP:UE. As best I can determine, Weighed But Found Wanting seems to be the most commonly used English title for this film: 50,000+ hits on Google for <"Weighed But Found Wanting" Brocka>, about 50 hits on GBooks, which seems to be considerably more hits than for any of the other English variants. (The reason I was looking at this page today was that another editor had marked this article for proposed deletion on the basis that this landmark film had "no evidence of notability"!) If I've missed something, please don't hesitate to write back so we can discuss. Best, --Arxiloxos (talk) 22:59, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Arxiloxos: I didn't get to check Google, so I didn't know it was already being used by many sources, but nevertheless, the original title of "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang" is the one most commonly used by film critics and Filipino cinephiles. Also, other Filipino films retained their original film titles, like Himala, Kisapmata, and Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon, so I still hold my support for changing the film's English pagename back to its original title. I hope you can understand my point. LionFosset (talk) 04:08, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point, but I think it's overcome here, where there's a well-attested English alternative, given by the policy that "On the English Wikipedia, article titles are written using the English language." But you're certainly welcome to bring the question to Wikipedia:Requested moves. --Arxiloxos (talk) 04:52, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Kogonada for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Kogonada is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kogonada until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. DGG ( talk ) 22:11, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New editor here; I have restored much of Kogonada's article without realizing that there had previously been a conversation about deleting the article to respect his privacy. I am hesitant to immediately delete what I have added because if Wikipedia did not have articles for every notable person that did not wish to have a Wikipedia article there would be massive blind spots in Wikipedia. Seeking your advice on how to proceed, or requesting that you delete the content once again.

John Tracy stated in the debate "My personal preference is that we should keep the page, but simply put "At the request of :: kogonada, a full Wikipedia page will not be created." along with a very brief summary." but it seems this was never done. I stumbled on a stub and proceeded to expand it before finding the larger version in the history. Malan88 (talk) 20:40, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages[edit]

You're probably not aware but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide. The linked article about the material you added to December 30 did not have any source that I could verify and add to this page to back up your addition so this change has been undone. If you restore it, please provide a direct reliable source. Thanks. Toddst1 (talk) 19:30, 4 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Toddst1: Wait, there is already a source in the linked article for the birth date of Timité Bassori: "Directory of African Film-Makers and Films" (1992), edited by Keith Shiri... Okay, I just realized that I mistakenly put Françoise instead of Shiri in the reference, so if that was what caused you to be unable to verify the source, my bad, I will correct it immediately.LionFosset (talk) 03:17, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So the deal is that we need to add a direct source in the DOY page. I'm not trying to be pedantic but since I couldn't verity that the source in the article supported the DOB, I didn't feel like I could use that and add it to the DOY page. I did look at it. Anyway, I think this can be easily worked out if we can either verify the source or find another one. Make sense? (maybe?) Toddst1 (talk) 05:21, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: The Months of African Cinema Continues….[edit]

Greetings!

Thank you very much for signing up to participate in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 200 articles created in over seven (7) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata entries are included. Furthermore, there have been about 5 in-person gatherings of Wikipedians in different countries across the world to create articles about African(a) cinema!

We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!

  • Article suggestions can be found here. You can also add to this list.
  • Some notable reliable sources for African cinema can be found here. Again, this list needs expansion.
  • Interested in Wikidata translation? check out the Occupation Drive, which is being led by Wiki Loves Women, in support of the contest and the project!
  • Please remember to list articles you have created or improved in the Article Achievements section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked.

Thank you once again for being part of this global event!

Kind regards.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 22:50, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Home entertainment, formerly redirect, now DAB[edit]

Greetings! I'm bothering you because you are a recent contributor to the Home video page. There was a page Home entertainment which was a redirect to Home video. In connection with a dispute over the first sentence of Home video, I realized that Home entertainment covers more than video, so I have changed it to a DAB with contents as you can examine. Do you disagree? And, might I ask you to weigh in at talk:Home video#First sentence? Thanks in advance for any response. Jeh (talk) 08:13, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cosmetic whitespace changes[edit]

Hey, thanks for your contribution at Ferdinand Magellan. I noticed that in addition to the content you added, you made a lot of cosmetic changes involving whitespace. Not sure if this is the result of some automation you use when editing? But I was just kind of curious if there's a reason behind them, e.g. removing the space after * in bulleted lists? It seems like, if anything, there's a very mild community preference in favour of the spaces. Not to get too testy about it, but the article used a consistent style of spaces after asterisks before, so it seems contrary at least to the spirit of MOS:STYLEVAR to change that en masse. Also it just makes the diff a lot harder to read. Not a big deal at all, just wanted to mention it, and possibly get your view. Colin M (talk) 18:38, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October![edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on Shake, Rattle & Roll 11. I do not think that Shake, Rattle & Roll 11 fits any of the speedy deletion criteria  because Many sources seem to refer to this by a roman number, and as per WP:COMMONNAME the "official name" does not control. Please establish consensus on the article talk page for any such move. I request that you consider not re-tagging Shake, Rattle & Roll 11 for speedy deletion without discussing the matter on the appropriate talk page. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 20:59, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The same applies to Shake, Rattle and Roll 12. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 21:02, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And aso to Shake, Rattle and Roll Fourteen: The Invasion. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 21:04, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@DESiegel: Okay, thank you for your assessment, DESiegel. However, may you reconsider the retitling of the article "Shake, Rattle and Roll XIV : The Invasion"? Sites such as IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, FilmAffinity, and Amazon Prime cite it as "Fourteen", while others such as PEP.ph, ABS-CBN News, and Regal on YouTube cite it as "14", so there is less of an argument for WP:COMMONNAME there, while the space before the colon is unnecessary. LionFosset (talk) 03:26, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, but at least some seem to cite it with roman numerals, so I won't touch it until there is an article talk page move discussion, with either consents reached or no objections for over a week. Undisclosed moves should be clear-cut, not just arguable, and that goes double when you need to use the CSD to get rid of an obstructing page. • Second place - $50
  • Third place - $30
  • Diversity Winner - $30
  • Gender gap filler - $30

Date formats[edit]

Hi, Philippine-related articles use the mdy format due to the Philippines' strong national ti₯es to the United States. You've gone incognito (talkcontribs) 09:08, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@You've gone incognito: Okay. I'm from the Philippines myself, and we use the m-d-y format here. I just simply had the preference that the date format for references should be uniformly d-m-y for every article (except for US-related articles, that is). LionFosset (talk) 11:17, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Consistent usage matters in the encyclopedia, so only one proper date format must be used in each article, whether in its body or inline citations. You've gone incognito (talkcontribs) 11:46, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia doesn't care about your preference, LionFosset. Stop removing the mdy format tags. Learn to follow the proper format.TheHotwiki (talk) 07:48, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@You've gone incognito: @Hotwiki:, thank you for noting! LionFosset (talk) 08:46, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Really, thank you. LionFosset (talk) 08:59, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No I didn't. Do you even know what you're saying? Again stop disrupting articles. Who are you remove mdy dates and dictate things here. Stop it!TheHotwiki (talk) 12:19, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hotwiki: Hm? What do you mean? LionFosset (talk) 13:42, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You've gone incognito it is not correct to say that only one proper date format must be used in each article. MOS:DATE says Special rules apply to citations; see Wikipedia:Citing sources#Citation style. Later MOS:DATEUNIFY says:

Publication dates in an article's citations should all use the same format, which may be:

  • the format used in the article body text,
  • an abbreviated format from the "Acceptable date formats" table, provided the day and month elements are in the same order as in dates in the article body, or
  • the format expected in the citation style being used (however, all-numeric date formats other than yyyy-mm-dd must still be avoided).

But it is not correct, LionFosset, that all citation dates must be in a uniform format across Wikipedia. Not is it correct to remove date format templates without discussion on the appropriate talk page. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 14:49, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the correction, DESiegel. I will refrain from both actions from now on. LionFosset (talk) 14:58, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note[edit]

Please read Wikipedia:Listcruft. Also can you please stop removing mdy tags to articles, it wasn't added for you to remove for absolutely no reason. And looks like, I'm not the only person who noticed your questionable habit of deleting them. Your edits are highly disruptive. I'm tired of seeing your problematic edits. So just stop. Thank you. TheHotwiki (talk) 07:45, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hotwiki: Episodes of a television series are not trivial. The partial list of episodes was an attempt at starting the list as a way to improve the article. I admit that I am not a perfect editor (though I don't think my edits are usually disruptive), but I do try my best to improve myself as an editor, such as when I realized that readability for editors is a priority on the website (the reason why spaces were added to infoboxes), and I will stop removing mdy tags, as I apologize for that. I was already following what you said about the mdy format for Philippine articles (Oops at the Lovingly Yours, Helen references, my bad there), so I hope you understand, "Restored". *wink wink* LionFosset (talk) 08:44, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is trivial when you select certain episodes to highlight in the article. "Partial" episode list is against Manual of Style. You clearly don't have the data for the entire list, so don't even bother. TheHotwiki (talk) 12:22, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hotwiki: I will bother no more! Thanks, Hotwiki. LionFosset (talk) 15:03, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Magnum .357[edit]

Good day!

Am going to leave a message here so we can discuss Magnum .357 here. I have a suggestion though. The remake is indeed entitled Magnum Muslim .357, but I think that was deliberate on E.R. Ejercito's part just so it can be defined which is which. Check the poster for the 1986 film. "Magnum" in shadow form precedes Muslim. That's why it has come to be known as Muslim .357 because the "Magnum" aspect was in shadow form while Muslim .357 is in bold form. It would also be beneficial down the line for us because then we wouldn't have to disambiguate the pages should a page devoted to the E.R. Ejercito movie be made.

Gardo Versace (talk) 05:35, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@LionFosset: I have already modified the Synopsis by expanding the same and making it more closely resemble a summary of the film, as it should be. Now, all we have to do is ask the help of an administrator or a page mover to correct the title of the film. But before that, we have to discuss the proposal I have outline above. What do you think about it? I want to hear your take on the matter first and as you can see, I have not yet changed the title of the article. Gardo Versace (talk) 06:05, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gardo Versace: Okay, well the first thing to note is that in every film article, only one section should be allotted for the summary, so the "Plot" and "Synopsis" sections should be combined together under one "Plot" section. As for the title, unless the advertising for a film is so prevalent as to overtake the actual title of the film (e.g. Iron Man 3 instead of Iron Man Three, the latter as seen in the film itself), please use the title as seen in the film itself. I assume that the 1986 poster's "Magnum" shadow is merely to make obvious the reference to the .357 S&W Magnum by titling the film as Muslim .357; "Magnum" is not used in the film's onscreen title. Also, a friendly reminder never to use IMDb as a source on Wikipedia (you can use it as an easy reference for awards lists or crew information, but afterwards verify them with other more reliable sources). LionFosset (talk) 06:31, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@LionFosset: I'll take note of that, though I am using IMDb as a mere placeholder until I can find better citations. I've had ao many unfortunate experiences of entire sections I've just put up being deleted simply because it is unsourced, hence my hands are forced into using IMDb for the time being. As for the title, I have checked the film and have seen Magnum is not used in the on-screen title, so I'd have to concede that one. As for the plot and synopsis, my apologies for that one as well. I've seen pages on Wikipedia contain both Plots and Synopsis and I thought the plot simply described the plot so that it wouldn't contain spoilers while the synopsis contains the summary of story itself. Gardo Versace (talk) 07:25, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gardo Versace: Quick tip: Add the template "Db-move" to the "Muslim .357" redirect holding up the page move you want to make, so that the redirect is speedily deleted for you to use it as the article title. LionFosset (talk) 07:35, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Back when I first used it in 2013, it was really satisfying to correct "The Eraserheads discography" to "Eraserheads discography". LionFosset (talk) 07:40, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@LionFosset: Thanks I highly appreciate it. I appreciate all the edits you've done on the pages I've created and those that I watch. I must say, it's a pleasure collaborating with you. I've got more FPJ movies in the pipeline that I'm still gathering enough references for, hopefully we can collaborate on those too. Gardo Versace (talk) 07:44, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
