WP:RfAr related[edit]

Gun control[edit]

Hi Penwhale. User:Hypocrit submitted evidence to the gun control Arbcom case alleging that User:North8000 violated his topic ban. However, the alleged violation does not directly relate to gun control, and therefore may be ignored by the committee. Should I submit this evidence to Arbcom/enforcement? The reason I ask (rather than awaiting the outcome of the case) is that there is the possibility that I may be given an interaction ban with the accused. If that happened, I don't know whether I would be permitted to submit evidence of sanction violation on the user. Thanks! — goethean 15:20, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please actually pay attention to the correct name of the user you're talking about ^^;... But yes, if you think the violation of the TBAN is not related to the case proper, file the enforcement request. However, I would say that @Hipocrite: should know about this too. (And I have used the {{ping}} template to alert him of this conversation. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 03:00, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noted you are the clerk on the Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Gun control case. What is the status of that case? I had seen a date on the main page that the "Proposed decision" would be out on 12 Feb, but I'm guessing that is merely a target? I'm not familiar with how arbitration proceedings on Wikipedia work, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Mvialt (talk) 16:11, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • It is a "target date"; remember that unlike the real world, Arbitrators are still volunteers and therefore sometimes things in the real world do get in the way. That being said, I will check up with the arbitrators and see what the status of the proposed decision is. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 02:58, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

AE action for Urartu TH[edit]

Hello, Penwhale. I was a party to an AE action [1], where you have closed the discussion by noting that "Urartu TH (talk · contribs) blocked by Sandstein for WP:NPA/WP:AGF issues separate from original request which was not actionable. - Penwhale".

I know that there generally exists a process by which one may appeal a block due to an Arbitration enforcement violation, but what about this type of block? As you noted, I did not violate the Arbitration decision, but rather--according to Sandstein--made remarks that violated WP:NPA/WP:AGF. I disagree with Sandstein and would like to appeal. Thank you.--Urartu TH (talk) 13:45, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • For the record, the fact that you are able to post here means that the block he put on you already expired (and therefore an appeal of the block is now moot). Most blocks that aren't associated with AE are generally appealed on the talk page of the blocked user while they were blocked (so in this case while you were blocked) using the {{unblock}} template. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 15:16, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Of course, I understand all that. But I believe that the block itself was an overreach and an abuse of discretion. On principle, I'd like this to be noted somehow. My concerns were ignored and without warning I was unduly blocked.--Urartu TH (talk) 21:22, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Supremacy RfAr Question[edit]

For [[7]] may I ask why this was marked as frivolous? If the committee votes to not go forward with this, I will accept, but it seems unfair to remove it before there's even chance for arbitration. Can you at least back up your stance as to why this is "frivilous"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Martin Van Ballin' (talkcontribs) 05:18, 14 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Specifically, there are a few issues with that request: (1) You haven't shown that there were previous attempts at resolving this issue (arbitration is a last resort); (2) ArbCom doesn't get involved with content issues; namely, you would need to raise the issue that certain things violates policies, (3) Arbitration usually starts after all other dispute resolution attempts have failed. Thus, the request was at least premature -- it would not be accepted at this point in time based on previous history of ArbCom. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 05:40, 14 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Other stuff[edit]

Thank You[edit]

Thank you for your coaching on diffs. I need to learn and use that method and tool. I'll keep you examples ready. It seems I did it wrong for this time so I hope I don't make anybody mad or make more work for the arbs. If what I added gets discounted, I'll learn my lesson. I just hope the hammer doesn't fall on me. Now I'm at Arbcom.....not where I want to spend time as a "party". I think I need to go edit more mundane topics and tread very carefully here. -Justanonymous (talk) 03:48, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'm onto it. With the extension, I had time to bundle some of the comments into diffs but left the more important stuff inline (not accusatory, just examples) . Got under 1,000. Thank you much! In the end, to me it's about creating the right environment to keep and tolerate bright established editors who have some eccentricities and also attract new editors...tough balance. We'll see what arbcom thinks and whether they retire me really early.-Justanonymous (talk) 00:08, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is a topic at ANI that relates to Baseball Bug's topic ban that he would like addressed, thanks!. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 22:34, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The above editor, who thinks that what I was topic-banned for a year ago is no big deal currently, alleges canvassing. I have notified a grand total of three editors who were involved in that discussion - two (including you) who implemented the ban, and one who was the subject of it. A pretty small canvass, and fairly balanced at that. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 23:09, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw your notice on my talk page. The original topic ban was based on a lie, and the current threat to block me is likewise based on a lie. I have nowhere to go with this. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:16, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK, having completed my two-week block a few days ago, I would now like your advice on how to ask for a change or dropping of the part of the topic ban that has to do with transgender. It's not something I edit about very often, or even hardly at all, but I don't like being labeled a bigot. The other part of the topic ban, about national security and such, can stay, as I am very unlikely to want to edit on that topic anyway. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 14:29, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can't figure out how to construct it. What I would really like is for the interaction bans to be lifted, as they are currently not being enforced anyway. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:33, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • You need any particular help constructing the amendment request? Look at the one I filed related to a different issue, and change the contents accordingly. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 03:07, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up to your AE comment[edit]

Do you have any further opinion to offer at WP:AE#WarKosign? Your last comment was August 31. I am planning to close this as no action but would hesitate if there is a net majority for a topic ban. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 01:28, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia[edit]

Henry, as a brand spankin' new 20-year-old administrator, you decided it would be OK to defame me at the top of each Wikipedia article concerning Waldorf Education. Have you gained any wisdom in all these years that might suggest this is something you shouldn't do to people? I understand you've been to college since then. Maybe you're a little wiser now. Maybe not. I don't think you fully realize the harm you have done here. It is literally defamation since HGilbert has posted my full name here. Do you understand where I'm going with this? I think you should remove that template. What do you think? Pete K2605:E000:24C0:E400:AC7C:8F4D:6D79:A689 (talk) 14:53, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suggested removing the templates a while back, which was clearly a mistake. Your continued disruption here has, if anything, only hurt your cause. a13ean (talk) 15:30, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Disruption? I posted on the talk pages a couple of times. No disruption. You can't stand that your editors have a COI and I keep pointing it out. I think there may be a legal issue here. You can't use Wikipedia to defame people like this. I'm asking Penwhale to take care of it. Otherwise, expect more problems. 2605:E000:24C0:E400:9820:7755:25C7:7F34 (talk) 00:40, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The presence or absence of that template isn't going to change whether or not I post on those pages to complain of COI. Why do you think it would? 2605:E000:24C0:E400:9820:7755:25C7:7F34 (talk) 00:42, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Henry, you get that you are an individual - and I know your full name. Wikipedia may ban me (who cares), but I can still sue YOU for defaming me all these years. Just remove the template... don't be an idiot. 2605:E000:24C0:E400:9820:7755:25C7:7F34 (talk) 00:59, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can do anything I like. Please don't try to tell me what to do. You can ban my IP address. That's it. I don't want to edit Wikipedia - I want you to take my name off the page. You can do it nicely or I CAN TAKE YOU TO COURT AND SUE YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL - and I'm not about to apologize to you for telling you my rights under the law. You have no power outside of Wikipedia. Do you think Wikipedia is going to provide you with legal protection. Do you still go to college? Do you still have professors? This is not about writing an article about me - it's about using a label to DEFAME me. You, Henry (and I know that's not your given name) don't have the right to do this to me. Wikipedia doesn't give you that right. You, an individual, are breaking the REAL law, not Wiki law. You guys are trying to scare me with Wiki guidelines? You're fuckin' IDIOTS. Do the right thing - stop defaming me on Wikipedia. Ban me NOW! And expect to hear from me again SOON! YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW! You aren't so tough outside of your little world here... remember that!
Pete K, I don't know what the details are of this mess, and to be honest I don't want to know. However, if you're going to make legal threats against another editor, then you'll be blocked for as long as those threats are pending. This is your chance to explain that you chose your words poorly and that you don't actually mean to threaten legal action. Otherwise, I'll have to block you. DS (talk) 02:28, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Backing up DS. Furthermore this is really hurting your case, which I was rather sympathetic to until this attempt to threaten Penwhale. NativeForeigner Talk 04:06, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pete, see this. I made a request to (a) convert your restrictions (which is basically a topic ban) into a de facto one so that (b) the restriction could be logged here rather than on Talk:Waldorf education, just as if the case is decided today. There will be a log of the restrictions somewhere - that is as much as I can do for you. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 13:20, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Despite all the ranting and legal threats, he does have a point that Hgilbert effectively doxed him by linking to an off-site page. To the best of my knowledge, he has never posted his own full name here (unlike HGilbert) although first name-last initial is not the greatest choice for someone wanting to stay anonymous. a13ean (talk) 17:25, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe I have ever posted my true name on Wikipedia. Discussions around this arose through Pete K posting this. Am I not remembering something? HGilbert (talk) 16:40, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The question, then, is for Hgilbert to tell us how he got that information. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 19:36, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PeteK advertised himself as the author of these edits and as the banned editor in question on a yahoo group posting, identifying me by name therein as well. All I did was refer the admins discussing possible sockpuppetry by the user in question to his own very public posting in which he doxed himself (if that is the right term). He was in fact using IP socks to circumvent the ban and provided his own evidence of this.
In other words, the information came from him, not from me. HGilbert (talk) 22:21, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, the user in question gave his own full name within Wikipedia on several occasions: HGilbert (talk) 15:01, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Closing an old thread[edit]

Thanks for going to the trouble of closing this thread at AE. It appeared that no participating admin had strong feelings, so the original discussion sagged due to lack of momentum. Atomium image[edit]

Hi Penwhale, I believe that you wrongly, but in good faith, deleted my image Atomium 320 by 240 CCBY20 flickr Mike Cattell.jpg on grounds of 'Violation of FoP'. That would have been a correct action if I had uploaded it to Commons. In contrast, Wikipedia:Non-free content policy allows 'fair use' of copyright images. If you read the deletion discussion of the image that was previously on the article for a long time you will see that it was rightly deleted due to lack of CC license on flikr, not anything to do with FOP. 9carney (talk) 19:13, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Scope of topic ban[edit]

Hi Penwhale. I just wanted to clarify that the scope of my topic ban that is in regards to "Climate change denial" is just that, rejection of the scientific consensus on climate change and not on climate change in general? Not that I plan on returned to CC in any form, any time soon. Just curious, really. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 12:11, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is what I gathered from the AE request; the topics chosen to be the scope of the TBAN was first raised by EdJohnston. (And yes, this is a ping to EdJohnston to invite comment.) - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 22:37, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Literally the topic ban was from Anthony Watts and from climate change denial, not from all of WP:ARBCC. But in practice, it is up to the banning admin (Penwhale) exactly how to interpret it. If I had been thinking clearly at the time, I would have proposed a ban from all of ARBCC, because the boundaries are hard to draw otherwise. And the ban was only for three months anyway, expiring on September 16. EdJohnston (talk) 03:06, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In responce to what EdJohnston said, the TBAN is as written. Regarding the CCD, it applies just like a TBAN - you can in theory edit a climate change article that isn't CCD-focused, but you would not be able to edit any section in that article that is related to CCD. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 03:53, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

AE closing[edit]

Hi, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement/Archive176#A_Quest_For_Knowledge I made the point that I never heard of a topic ban being reinstated for a shorter period of time, or given a narrower scope, when there is similar problematic behavior after a topic ban has been lifted.[11] Have you? I thought this deserved an answer either way. AE is pretty time-consuming for all involved, and there's an indication we'll be back there after the topic ban expires ("So we let it ride, and hope for things to cool down, and come back later. OK?").[12] Manul ~ talk 21:07, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The wording used is "lifted" and "vacated". I don't know what is meant by "completely vacated" (the vacating vote wasn't unanimous (if that is the meaning)). I'm not trying to corner you, I'm just not aware of any precedent. Are you? Manul ~ talk 03:17, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What I meant was that the motion lifting TBAN does not replace it with a different sanction. In addition, a cursory look through AQFK's talk page shows no actual sanctions since the lifting of Remedy 18 until I imposed via DS a TBAN. Basically, because AQFK had successfully appealed the TBAN in the area and was not subject to any other sanctions at the time of the AE request, coupled with the lack of any active sanctions on AQFK, I believe this is appropriate. If you disagree with the sanction itself, I think you'd have to raise it at WP:ARCA, probably. AE is not the place to seek review (unless you're the sanctioned editor).
Pinging @EdJohnston: and @Gamaliel: as the two admins that proposed/agreed with the duration and scope, I'd like to hear your input on this. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 03:39, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not looking to formally challenge the sanction; I asked because I thought it was unusual. For all I knew you might have said "Oops I missed that". Until now I wasn't aware that you issued the previous TBAN, or that you have been involved with arbcom. The "oops" falls to me. Manul ~ talk 04:03, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with User:Penwhale. EdJohnston (talk) 04:13, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, AQFK was ever only under 2 TBANs as far as I know: the one directly from the CC case (Remedy 18) that was vacated, and the one I issued when I closed the AE report. The CC case one was not issued by me, but by Doug Weller; I did not clerk that case. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 05:31, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It does seem that this editor has a long track record of problems in this topic area, but I'm inclined to agree with this sanction as well and see what happens. A longer one can always be imposed if he immediately returns to the topic area and has the same problems. Gamaliel (talk) 15:01, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification[edit]

Curious, would it be possible for you to clarify what you mean by this? Thanks. Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 12:59, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tillman posted on Peter's talk page inviting for email correspondence and not using the email this user function. Construed with what has been going on in the topic area... - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 17:55, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I don't agree with the Petes on much of anything in this topic area, either in their views or in their way of presenting them, and may submit evidence against one or both. But to be fair it's my understanding that editors are allowed to communicate with one another outside the project. Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 01:26, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are allowed to communicate with one another outside the project, but the wording of Tillman's comment is an attempt to have off-wiki discussion in the topic area, and it is frowned upon if the cause of such discussion is to work on WP content. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 04:12, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mann Jess's ArbComm filings[edit]

I see some correspondence between Mann Jess and yourself, concerning the complaint she recently refiled against myself and Peter Gulutzan. As you probably know, she succeeded with her complaint against AQFK last month.

In my view, the real problem here is Mann Jess herself (presuming she is a she.). For some time, I’ve been considering filing an ArbCom complaint re Mann Jess’s editing behavior in the CC area, especially in the case of Anthony Watts (blogger) and his WUWT blog. I regard her actions there as egregious POV pushing, tendentious editing and, in general, found her impossible to deal with as a fellow-editor. She's certainly single-minded (imo). Other editors who couldn't deal with her single-minded editing included both Gulutzan and AQFK. A pattern emerges.

You should also be aware of the legal jeopardy that MJ (and others) could be putting the project under: I believe Anthony Watts was receiving legal advice, and perhaps offers of pro bono legal representation, for filing a defamation and slander lawsuit against Wikipedia's parent for the attempted labelling of Watts as a "climate change denier" by MJ and collaborating editors. Watts emphatically rejects this charge. If you like, I will look back & see if I can find the postings at Watts blog re this. I don't think he expressed any interest in actually filing a suit.

Anyway: I certainly don’t have time to compile something on her now now — I don’t really even have time to mount a refutation of her charges here, except to note that many appear to be "ruffled feathers". And I hate this sort of unproductive posturing and namecalling. Ah, well, in the soup now. Tant pis.

I see you are (to date) the only ArbComm who has commented. So: I tried to contact Gulutazn to see if he wanted to collaborate on a complaint againt MJ. He declined. That's the substance behind someone's complaint, that you commented on. Best regards, Pete Tillman (talk) 18:44, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm only arbcom clerk, and my correspondence with Mann Jess was purely administrative (she's supposed to notify whomever she takes to AE, and she didn't, so I told her she needed to or it could be subject to automatically declination). I have not looked into the actual request itself, and note that I only commented on your post on PG's talk page (which has since been removed). For what it's worth, if you can offer evidence that Mann Jess has had issues in the area, you can offer it - AE requests can boomerang back to the filer. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 02:30, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Time crunch continues -- I'll get to it when I can. Best, Pete Tillman (talk) 04:30, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of procedural questions:

  1. Would it be a reasonable to ask that a ruling on my "indictment" be delayed until I have time to file charges against its originator (as discussed above)? I'm still in a time-crunch, but should have some time for this by middle of next week.
  2. Since it seems likely I will be sanctioned, would it be worth my while to volunteer to refrain from editing in the topic areas in question for some period of time? I recall some editors volunteering for some such arrangement in the last big roundup of CC violators. The case of User:KimDabelsteinPetersen comes to mind. Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 21:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed numbering for you (a blank line between the questions was making both no.1). As for the questions: (1) You really want to at least get some proofs in, or ask that on AE yourself. (2) That completely depends on whomever is going to close. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 00:38, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal[edit]

Although I believe that you implemented both sanctions in good faith, I think that the situation could have been handled better. In particular, you should have gone after the editors who were causing the problem, not the ones reacting to the problem. But I fully realize that AE cases can be complex, and it can be difficult to narrow down which editors are actually causing the problem. In any case, I have appealed both of your sanctions.[13] A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 05:16, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list[edit]

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! Appeal of your Sanction[edit]

Hi Penwhale,

Yes, I realize that the sanction has already expired, but this is a matter which reflects on my integrity, which I value highly. If you recall, you sanctioned me for edit-warring to remove WP:BLP violations. As you are no doubt aware, WP:BLP provided exceptions for BLP violations. In fact, BLP requires that editors should remove BLP violations:

"Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.[2] Users who persistently or egregiously violate this policy may be blocked from editing."

I followed Wikipedia policy, yet I was sanctioned for following it. This is backwards. We should not be sanctioning editors for following Wikipedia policy. Can you please revoke your sanction? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 23:33, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • User:Penwhale's sanction was applied as the conclusion of Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement/Archive176#A Quest For Knowledge. The definition of a BLP violation is a matter for WP consensus. An editor can't just make up his own definition of a BLP problem and then declare himself immune to criticism when he acts on it. The 22 reverts that you made in the name of BLP were all reverted by others. If Penwhale undoes your sanction, it would appear to be declaring that your 22 reverts were justifiable, and that you could have continued forever. The list of your 22 reverts was offered by User:Mann jess in the paragraph beginning "AQFK has also been edit warring on the article for a considerable time.." I came up with the number 22 by counting all the diffs he provided in that section. EdJohnston (talk) 03:37, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm sorry, but that specifically goes against Wikipedia policy. Per WP:BLP, the burden of proof lies on the editor who restores the material, not the other way around. Once an editor raises a good faith concern about a BLP issue, the issue should have been taken to the talk page where discussion should proceed until WP:CONSENSUS is achieved. Under no circumstance should editors edit-war contentious WP:BLP material into an article. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 10:35, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I concur with Ed. There are methods for addressing these alleged problems, such as the talk page or WP:BLPN. BLP is not a license for infinite reverts in borderline cases. Gamaliel (talk) 13:11, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • First, I did attempt to discuss it on the article talk page as well as WP:BLPN. I can dig up the diffs if you like.
  • Second, I strongly oppose edit-warring. Unfortunately, WP:BRD only works when everyone else is willing to follow it.
  • Third, with regards to "BLP is not a license for infinite reverts in borderline cases". WP:LABEL says that contentious labels are best avoided unless widely used by reliable sources to describe the subject, in which case use in-text attribution. "Deniar" is not widely-used, and nobody has presented any evidence to the contrary. So, what part of this is borderline? WP:BLP says that "Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.". Note that BLP says that contentious material should be removed. It doesn't say that it might be removed, or that it can be removed or that we should flip a coin to figure out whether it should be removed. It states plainly that this should be removed. We cannot be sanctioning editors for following policy.
  • Fourth, with regards to "BLP is not a license for infinite reverts", but infinite reverts is exactly what WP:AE is condoning. It takes two to edit war. But only one side was sanctioned. Ironically, it was the side that actually followed content policy. This is completely backwards. AE should be sanctioning the editors who edit-warred against content policy, not those that followed it. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 18:06, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sound of crickets.... If AE admins are unwilling to defend this sanction, I move that it be repealed. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 00:48, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(1) I think they defended their decision, and (2) contrary to what you may believe, my talk page doesn't actually get that much traffic, and thus usually it's better to re-ping the people in this conversation when you actually expect a reply. -> @Heimstern, Gamaliel, and EdJohnston: - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 17:28, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In light of the evidence provided above, it may be best for all concerned if the sanction is reinstated and made indefinite (not necessarily infinite). Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 19:12, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My read on this situation is that AQFK is attempting to turn a content dispute into a BLP matter. This may unfortunately be necessary. Gamaliel (talk) 17:34, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The issue of BLP has occurred in the past in WP:ARBCC where editors would tenaciously defend some skeptical scientists and want to remove criticism from their articles on the grounds of 'BLP'. If AQFK is planning to continue this practice it seems possible he will be reported again. Personally I am not fond of the term 'denier' but its use ought to be worked out in a proper discussion, not be the subject of an edit war. EdJohnston (talk) 17:44, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Gamaliel: I'm sorry, but this is a BLP matter that is being twisted into a content dispute. WP:LABEL is very clear: "Value-laden labels...may express contentious opinion and are best avoided unless widely used by reliable sources to describe the subject, are best avoided unless widely used by reliable sources to describe the subject" The fact remains that reliable sources do not widely use this term. I did NOT make up this rule. I'm simply attempting to follow it. It doesn't make sense to be sanctioning the editors who are actually attempting to follow content policy, while ignoring editors who ignored core Wikipedia rules. In fact, the editors in favor of violating BLP actually tried to change the rules to make it easier to violate BLP.[14] [15][16] Fortunately, the community agreed with me and rejected this attempt to water down BLP.[17] A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 00:36, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
EdJohnston: I absolutely agree that this should be worked out in a proper discussion, not the subject of an edit war. In fact, the irony is that I am one of the strongest advocates of discussion instead of edit-warring. But discussion and BRD only works if everyone is willing to follow it, and we have editors who think that the proper way to resolve content disputes is thru edit-warring, which I strongly oppose. Unfortunately, AE decided to take the side of the edit-warriors who not only violated Wikipedia's conduct rules, but also Wikipedia's content rules. In this ruling, did you seriously mean to legitimize edit-warring as a way to win content disputes? I don't think that was your intent. But that was the net result. WP:BLP errs on the side of caution. Whenever a good faith editor raises a legitimate WP:BLP concern, under no circumstance should any editor edit-war the contentious BLP content back into an article. Official Wikipedia policy is that the burden of proof is on the editor attempting to restore the content. Yet, I might be the first ever editor ever sanctioned for following policy. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 00:36, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Gamaliel, EdJohnston Again, the silence is deafening. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 18:11, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Gamaliel, EdJohnston, Penwhale Given that no AE admin is willing to defend sanctioning editors for following WP:BLP, can I please get this sanction revoked? This travesty has gone on far too long. We cannot be sanctioning editors for simply following WP:BLP. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 00:19, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@A Quest For Knowledge: you are using the wrong bracket for ping (you typed [[ping]] instead of {{ping}}). Personally, I'd like you to raise this on ANI (since AE is definitely the wrong venue for this at this point). But since you failed to ping correctly, I'll do it for you: @Heimstern, Gamaliel, and EdJohnston: any response? - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 03:10, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry AQFK, I disagree with your assessment of the sanction, and even if I agreed with you, I can not revoke another administrator's AE sanction outside of consensus. You will have to get other administrators to form a consensus at AE or another forum. Gamaliel (talk) 03:27, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Replying since I was pinged. AQFK, you are still disappointed with the result of Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement/Archive181#Arbitration enforcement action appeal by A Quest For Knowledge. The standard advice for people who don't like an AE decision about them is to appeal at WP:ARCA. This is explained at WP:AC/DS#Appeals and modifications. EdJohnston (talk) 05:04, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just as a side, @A Quest For Knowledge: I believe that you should find a better location for this discussion, as my talk page gets very little traffic for a suitable discussion. (i.e. if you want other admins who didn't already read into the original request to comment) - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 04:51, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I originally tried appealing this at AE, but it was closed without a decision on the grounds that that the sanction had expired. I won't bother providing a diff to prove this, because I've been able to prove everything I've ever said with numerous diffs, yet it hasn't made a difference so far. If you doubt me, go do some basic research and you will find that everything I've said so far, is 100% supported by the facts. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 18:11, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think AE would be the wrong venue to appeal this after the expiration of the sanction. However, I'm not entirely sure where AN (or ANI) would be a better place. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 05:43, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gamaliel, EdJohnston: I've already appealed first at WP:AE. But an admin from WP:AE told me to appeal at the closing AE admin's talk page. So I refiled my appeal at a second venue. Now another admin from AE (EdJohnston) is telling me file my appeal at third venue. So, what happens if I try again only to be told to refile at a fourth venue?

Where exactly does the buck stop?

I do not understand why I need to keep filing the same appeal only to be told to file somewhere else. Where does it end?

In fact, instead of referring me to yet another venue, how about we discuss the actual substance of the issue? Gamaliel, EdJohnston, Penwhale Do you agree that WP:LABEL states that value-laden labels such as denier should be "avoided unless widely used by reliable sources to describe the subject, in which case use in-text attribution."? I'm highlighting this sentence because this is the very crux of the issue. Please address the issue. Avoiding the problem doesn't make it go away. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 15:52, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

AQFK, it sounds like you want to gather support for your interpretation of WP:LABEL. That's an issue for community consensus, and you're not likely to get a decision in your favor by going to AE or Arbcom. If a biographical article on a climate change critic is written in unbalanced fashion, that is something that people can work to fix. Revert warring on such an article is unlikely to end well, for whoever does it. If you reread your last AE appeal carefully, you may notice that some of your concerns do get resonance, just not the edit warring. See for example the comment by User:Zero0000. If people use 'denier' to mean 'someone who knows global warming is happening but chooses to deny it' it's like an accusation of lying. Usually Wikipedia is very careful about stuff like that. For example the fraud assertions in Andrew Wakefield seem to be backed by consensus and policy, but very carefully. EdJohnston (talk) 16:40, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
EdJohnston I don't need to gather support for WP:LABEL. It's already an existing guideline. It plainly states that terms are such as denialist are "best avoided unless widely used by reliable sources to describe the subject. I will repeat: it is wrong to sanction editors for following the rules. And if you want to sanction editors for following the rules, then you should first have the rules changed. Have you proposed that WP:LABEL be changed? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 15:37, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)[edit]

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:23, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
