This is the talk page for discussing WikiProject Montana and anything related to its purposes and tasks. |

This project page does not require a rating on Wikipedia's content assessment scale. It is of interest to the following WikiProjects: | |||||||||||||||
|
I have commenced the project assessment categories which will help us "rate" all project related articles based on their quality. Project members can first examine articles related to the scope of this project and then proceed to the article talk page and "rate" the article. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Montana/Assessment for guidance as to how to rate articles. This is an informal, no need for hurry mission for the project, so anyone interested can do this as they have the time and/or inclination. There is also a link to the assessment guide under the "assessment" heading from the main project page as well. Basically, the way to rate the article is to hit the edit this page at the top of each article's talkpage. Edit the {{WikiProject Montana}} template by adjusting to:
{{WikiProject Montana|class=FA}} For Featured articles if they have been rated already
{{|WikiProject Montana|class=A}} For A class articles
{{WikiProject Montana|class=GA}} For Good articles if they have been rated already
{{WikiProject Montana|class=B}} For B class articles
{{WikiProject Montana|class=Start}} For Start level articles
{{WikiProject Montana|class=Stub}} For Stubs
{{WikiProject Montana|class=NA}} For Non-Articles such as category pages, templates and Project related pages for this project.
If no adjustments are made to the rating, the article is left in the Unassessed category.
For further details and info, don't hestitate to ask me or refer to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Montana/Assessment guide.--MONGO 09:36, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
When the article is rated, it is automatically placed in a category which reflects that rating:
- Category:WikiProject Montana articles by quality (Master category)
- Category:FA-Class Montana articles
- Category:A-Class Montana articles
- Category:GA-Class Montana articles
- Category:B-Class Montana articles
- Category:Start-Class Montana articles
- Category:Stub-Class Montana articles
- Category:Non-article Montana pages
- Category:Unassessed Montana articles
Montana cities task force
[edit]I was thinking it may be good to organize a task force related to Montana's largest (let's say the top seven) cities to increase collaboration and help improve the articles related to Montana's population centers. I think that it would be difficult to generate enough interest to have a separate task force for each city, but if we had a single organized project that it may help. I may probably create one anyway, but I was hoping for any feedback that may come. Dsetay (talk) 16:40, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
- I like what you did, but I wouldn't do an importance criteria on the tagged articles, the importance ranking for WP:Montana overall should be sufficient (I can see the edit war of importance ranking cities -- especially with only 7 major ones). I agree there is no reason to do task forces for individual communities, as there are insufficient editors and population to generate that level of scrutiny (given the whole population of Montana is arguably only about a million -- less than the city of Denver...). Montanabw(talk) 03:58, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
- I removed the importance tag awhile ago, I though. Mainly, because I thought it was a pain. The importance tag now there is simply for the WikiProject Montana. I added that only about a month ago, so many, if not most, articles haven't been assessed. Personally, I don't really want that responsibility and have been leaving them blank wherever I come across it.Dsetay (talk) 04:40, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Montana articles lacking sources
[edit]Have created a new category Category:Montana articles lacking sources to start identifying Montana articles that need references. As it gets populated, we should begin looking for and adding sources to bring these articles up to snuff. If you know of Montana related articles needing sources, please add this category to the article (it is a hidden category) Thanks --Mike Cline (talk) 15:00, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Over at WikiProject Equine, someone, somehow set up a cleanup listing that takes all the tagged articles and does a plug and chug to accomplish the same thing, that way when the tag is removed, the article disappears from the list. I think the bot that did all this crashed for awhile, but is up and running again. However, I'm weak on the techie side of WP, so you might want to look into this and see is we can do it here. Meetup in Billings
[edit]Hello! I am coordinating a meetup for Wikipedia Day in Billings. It will be January 15th from 6pm to 8pm at the new City Library. Using a page at meta to organize. It is at m:Meetup/Billings/1. Please spread the word to anyone who may be interested. I'll add links to some nonWikipedia promotion once it's finalized. Thanks! --Tbennert (talk) 18:23, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
- Great idea--I live in Billings so sign me up. Rjensen (talk) 22:29, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

If you would like to encourage any non-Wiki folks to attend, they can visit either Billings Public Library or Kaleid. I also have flyers in pdf and jpg format if anyone would like. Thanks! --Tbennert (talk) 18:33, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
Hello! We ended up with 8 people plus Rjensen and me. Went okay and gave everyone my contact info for both on and off-Wiki. Hopefully we will gain a few new editors. --Tbennert (talk) 17:11, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- Yay! Good luck! Montanabw(talk) 21:01, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
Suggestion
[edit]Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:56, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Northeast Montana Update
[edit]Not sure if this is the place for this, but I have been working on a few pages for communities in Northeast Montana. Thought it would be a good idea to give the project an update on that. I did a lot of research into U.S. Census reports. I couldn't find good sources for a few years but found enough reports to cover from 1900 forward. If anyone is in need of that data for a community, let me know or look at the references under Hinsdale, Montana. Shadybradyj (talk) 19:12, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Information about these peaks can be found in their references on the List of mountain peaks of Montana. We also need good mountain photos for the articles and list gallery. Yours aye, Buaidh 23:16, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
Mike Cline: This is up your alley, I know we have photos of Sac peak and probably you can get shots of other stuff in Gallatin County. Montanabw(talk) 01:56, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
US 50,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:19, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
Goodding's willow
[edit]Did you know that Goodding's willow was named for its collector, Leslie Newton Goodding, who studied botany, plant pathology and pedagogy at la Universidad de Montana? Se habla español? Montana NRHP articles
[edit]I've been making a bit of a push to improve and to create new articles on National Register properties in Montana recently. User:Tbennert and User:Montanabw are two others who have edited a lot in this area before. Are there others? By the way, NRHP registration documents with photos and text description of importance of properties are now available online for almost all Montana NRHP properties (some instructions are at wp:NRHPhelp#Montana). According to the combo measure "net quality" at wp:NRHPPROGRESS which is a weighted average of percentage completion in photos and articles, Montana is about 26 percent "done"; i am hoping to bring that over 30 percent, perhaps over 40 percent.
Is this WikiProject at all active? Many state wikiprojects kind of got shut down when the U.S.-wide WikiProject got started a few years ago. It seems to me that the state level is the right level for a lot of discussion / participation, even if it is often fairly quiet. cheers, --doncram 02:35, 31 July 2017 (UTC) (re-pinging User:Tbennert and User:Montanabw as my last edit might not have pinged properly)

User script to detect unreliable sources
[edit]I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
This is a one time notice and can't be unsubscribed from. Delivered by: MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:01, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments
[edit]Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:35, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
