The 2023–24 Indian Super League was the 10th season of the Indian Super League (ISL) and the 28th season of the top-tier in Indian football. It commenced on 21 September 2023 and concluded with the ISL Cup final on 4 May 2024.[1][2]
Mumbai City were the defending champions whilst Mohun Bagan SG were the defending cup winners.[3][4]
Mohun Bagan SG became champions by winning their first ISL title and sixth Indian title overall by topping the regular season table with a record 48 points.[5] Mumbai City won their second ISL Cup, defeating Mohun Bagan SG 3–1 in the final.[2]
Changes from last season[edit]
- This was the first season where the promoted I-League winner competed, thereby increasing the number of participating teams to 12. Punjab FC was promoted to the Indian Super League by winning the 2022–23 I-League.[6]
- The league was played around eight months for the first time, primarily due to the breaks taken during the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and 2026 World Cup qualification matches.[7]
- As per the new AFC Club Competitions Ranking structure,[8] ISL clubs will not be eligible for a slot in the AFC Champions League; instead, the league premiers will qualify for the AFC Cup group stage, rebranded as AFC Champions League Two.[9]
- This season, defending League Shield winners wear the champions badge instead of the defending cup winners.[10]
- In May 2023, the South Asian Football Federation Ordinary Congress decided to hold the inaugural SAFF Club Championship. The two teams that finish the highest in the 2023-24 Indian Super League table and have not qualified for the AFC Champions League Two or AFC Challenge League will represent India.[11]
Teams[edit]
Twelve teams competed in the league: eleven from the previous season and one promoted from the 2022–23 I-League.
