Corruption in Brunei

Political corruption in Brunei has been fought however it is not fully eradicated, with corrupt officials being called out by Bruneian politicians.[1]
Overview
[edit]Brunei did not have data in the most recent 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International. However, in the 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index it scored 60/100 on a scale of 0 (“highly corrupt”) to 100 (“very clean”), ranking it 35th out of the 180 countries surveyed.[2] The country ranked first is perceived to have the most honest public sector.[3] For comparison with worldwide scores, the best score was 88 (ranked 1), the average score was 43, and the worst score was 12 (ranked 180).[4] For comparison with regional scores, the highest score among the countries of the Asia Pacific region[Note 1] was 88, the average score was 45 and the lowest score was 18.[5]
Anti-corruption efforts
[edit]According to the 2023 Freedom in the World report, conducted by Freedom House Brunei was given 3/4 in the section stating “Are safeguards against official corruption strong and effective?”.[6]
Cases of corruption
[edit]In 2020, two former judges were convicted for embezzlement of over millions of dollars from government controlled accounts.[6][7]
