The Institute for Development and Diplomacy (IDD) is an Azerbaijan-based research institute specializing in building connections with communities worldwide engaged in expertise, research and policy-making.[1]

History

[edit]

IDD was established under ADA University in 2022 with the goal of expanding connections with experts and communities engaged in research and policy-making, as well as strengthening its role in both the Silk Road region and the world in general.

Modeled on the experience of leading research institutions worldwide, the IDD considers itself a central hub for policy-oriented, interdisciplinary research and analysis at ADA University. It serves as a venue for policy-oriented conferences, briefings, and practical sessions. Its strategic vision is to serve as a regional center for the study and analysis of state policy, fostering intellectual discussions, training talented personnel, and promoting international advocacy.[2][3][4]

It is involved in publishing independent research, organizing conferences and policy briefings, and offering executive education programs.[5] IDD also fosters dialogue and debate on significant regional and global issues.[6][7][8] Additionally, it aims to cultivate professionals from diverse sectors, provide mentorship, and engage in international exchanges.[2]

Publications

[edit]

The Institute for Development and Diplomacy publishes analytic policy briefs, working papers, monographs, and special reports on various subjects, including grand strategy, statecraft, geopolitics, diplomacy, multilateralism, defence, security, peacemaking, regional cooperation, transportation, infrastructure, economics, trade, development, governance reform, energy, sustainable development, and reconciliation efforts related to Karabakh. While the institute covers a broad geographic scope, its primary focus is on the overlapping regions to which Azerbaijan and its neighbours belong. IDD is also the home of the academic book imprint ADA University Press and the quarterly policy journal Baku Dialogues.

Baku Dialogues

[edit]

Baku Dialogues is an English-language quarterly journal published by ADA University, which was re-launched in September 2020. Initially released in September 2014, the journal covers policy perspectives on the Silk Road region—a term used to define the geopolitical area spanning from Anatolia to the warm seas, across the Caspian Sea to the Great Steppe, east to the Altai Mountains and Taklamakan Desert, and south to the Hindu Kush and Indus Valley, encompassing the Persian Gulf and Fertile Crescent to the Black Sea.[9]

The journal focuses on present-day issues such as energy politics, infrastructure security, economic development and cultural heritage that affect the international standing of the Silk Road region. It aims to provide insight into the political and economic crossroads between different geographies, its role as an intercessor between major powers and its position as a gateway for regional and international interactions.[10]

The intended audience for Baku Dialogues includes policymakers, diplomats, business executives, academics, journalists, and others involved in regional and international affairs. The journal maintains independence, and the views expressed by its contributors do not necessarily reflect those of ADA University or its affiliates. It serves as a platform for intellectual discussion and policy-oriented debates.[11]
