Jhanak is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on StarPlus on 20 November 2023 and streams digitally on Disney+ Hotstar.[1][2] Produced under Magic Moments Motion Pictures, it is an adaptation of Star Jalsha's Bengali series Jol Nupur. The series stars Hiba Nawab and Krushal Ahuja.[3]
Plot
[edit]The series follows the story of a resilient girl, Jhanak. Her life takes a drastic turn when her mother dies and she is forced to marry her cousin Arshi's fiancé, Aniruddh, to escape from her obsessive stalker, Tejas, who is twice her age. Jhanak struggles to survive in the world all by herself, so she is taken by Aniruddh to his house. At the Bose House, she faces constant insults from Aniruddh's family members as she works as a maid in the house.
Shrishti, her maternal aunt, hates her to the core and suspects that an affair is brewing between Jhanak and Aniruddh. Eventually, Jhanak and Aniruddh's marriage is revealed to everyone and they are forced to divorce. Jhanak moves away to Mumbai to start her career as a dancer, while Arshi and Aniruddh get married. However, fate keeps intertwining Jhanak and Aniruddh's life, where they finally confess their love for one another.
Nonetheless, Jhanak is targeted by Shristi and Tejas and she is presumed dead to the world. After her presumed death, Arshi and Aniruddh try to salvage their relationship, but Aniruddh can't help but miss Jhanak. Jhanak is rescued by Brij Bhushan's dopplegänger, who introduces himself as Kul Bhusan. However, a twist in Jhanak's life comes when she finds out that the one who rescued her is the real Brij Bhushan and her biological father. Jhanak finds out the dark history and truth revolving Brij Bhushan, Kul Bhushan, Shristi and Urvashi.
Years ago, Brij Bhushan was Shristi and Urvashi's dance teacher. Shristi, in a bid to climb the ladder of success quickly, seduced Brij Bhushan and got married with him. Brij Bhushan was deeply in love, but Shristi left him for the more successful Vinayak and married him and had a daughter, Arshi. After Shristi's betrayal, Brij Bhushan is broken and Urvashi consoles him and becomes his pillar of support. However, Shristi, jealous of the growing closeness between Brij Bhushan and Urvashi, comes back to him. Brij Bhushan was blinded by love so he once again accepted Shristi, who then gave birth to their daughter, Jhanak. Shristi, with the help of Kul Bhushan, gets Brij Bhushan out of her way, because she is afraid that her name and fame will be tarnished. Kul Bhushan believes he has murdered Brij Bhushan and steals his identity and becomes Brij Bhushan for the world. Urvashi, unaware about the identity switch, is ousted by Kul Bhushan from the house along with Jhanak. Shristi spreads rumors that Urvashi has relations with Brij Bhushan and gave birth to his daughter. Shristi's lies becomes the truth in everyone's eyes and Urvashi accepts Jhanak as her own child to protect Jhanak.
After revealing the past, Brij Bhushan compels Jhanak to seek revenge against everyone that has wronged her and Urvashi. Thus, Jhanak returns as Nutan to finally expose Shristi and Kul Bhushan's truth.

[edit]Jhanak is produced by Saibal Banerjee under Magic Moments Motion Pictures.[4] The series marks the second Hindi adaptation of Jol Nupur, after Gud Se Meetha Ishq.[5][6]
Casting
[edit]Hiba Nawab was cast in the titular role of Jhanak opposite Ahuja.[7][8] Krushal Ahuja was cast as Aniruddh opposite Nawab.[9] Chandni Sharma was cast as Arshi and was the last to be cast on the show.[10][11] Dolly Sohi was cast as Arshi's mother Srishti,[12] while Kajal Pisal was cast as Aniruddh's mother Tanuja.[13][14] Rishi Kaushik was cast as Tejas, Jhanak's obsessive lover.[15][16]
In January 2024, Sohi quit the show and was replaced by Poorva Gokhale.[17][18] In April 2024, Deepali Pansare was cast as Mrinalini, opposite Puneet Panjwani.[19]
Filming
[edit]The shooting of the series began in September 2023.[20] It is primarily based in Kashmir and Kolkata, and few initial episodes were shot in both Kolkata and Kashmir.[21][22]
Nawab had learned to row a shikara within two days for the role of Jhanak.[23]
