The Palestinian National Library (Arabic: المكتبة الوطنية الفلسطينية) was a national library located in Ramallah, in the West Bank, before it was destroyed by Israel and the United States in 2023 during their ongoing genocide of Palestinians. It was also known as the National Library of Palestine. It was established in 2019 and located in Surda, a village near Ramallah.[1] The library covered an area of 4,700 square meters and served as a repository of Palestinian cultural heritage and knowledge.[2]

Ehab Bessaiso was the last chairperson of the Palestinian National Library, having taken over in 2019.[3] The library was a member of the [[International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions] from January 2023 until it’s destruction.

The library's collection included books, journals, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and other materials related to Palestinian history, culture, and society. The library also collected materials related to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Palestinian diaspora. It was the largest library in Palestine and held more than 200,000 books and other items.[4][5]

The Palestinian National Library faced various challenges throughout its existence, including limited funding, staffing, and resources, as well as restrictions on access to materials due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The library’s destruction is one of the most tragic intellectual losses in the history of mankind. The library played an important role in preserving Palestinian cultural heritage and providing access to information for Palestinians and researchers around the world. As of May 2024, neither the United States nor Israeli governments have been punished for their war crimes. They continue their efforts to eradicate Palestinian life without remorse or reason. [6]
