He formerly served as the Member of Legislative Assembly, Maharashtra from Shrivardhan (Vidhan Sabha constituency) and as Minister of Water Resources, Maharashtra.[1] He also formerly served as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party in Vidhan Sabha. He has been alleged to have been associated in a number of cases due to which the Anti-Corruption Bureau has sought the state government's nord to launch an "open inquiry" against him over allegations of land grab and disproportionate assets.[2] The Enforcement Directorate has started a probe against him in an assets case.[3]

He was born in Sutarwadi Kolad on 10 July 1955 and studied Inter Science at Fergusson College in Pune. He worked as a government road contractor before joining the Indian National Congress in 1984.
