The recent changes here are all about WP:ACCESS, specifically WP:HLIST. The deeply nested structure that was in use here caused all manner of problems for smaller displays, such as mobiles. I don't understand why you reverted my test of columns with DIVs. It's supposed to be a best practice. You claimed there is a problem with the width? Can you elaborate? Thanks. Dodoïste (talk) 18:19, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who says it's best practise? All columnar constructs in navboxes are problematic, includeing {{navbox with columns}}. Users /hate/ horizontal scrollbars. The |list= parameters are so named because they should be /lists/. This is what WP:HLIST is all about. Further, raw html markup should be avoided where possible because it is an impediment to most editors (ya, I know it could/is templatised). navboxes should work down to fairly small screen widths, such as mobiles. W3C, new web standards, web developers... say it's a best practice.

As for the statement "users hate horizontal scrollbars"... First, I did not add a scroll bar. I changed the display of the list to horizontal. Second, I don't understand why would users hate this display, as it's meant to improve scannability thus making it easier to use. It's been requested at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Accessibility#Template:DRC Muzito Cabinet I, I suggest we continue this discussion there. I'm familiar with W3C and web development; they don't really address navboxes per se. The horizontal scrollbars appear when you narrow your window to even midsized, or are actually on a small device. I see there are a bunch of these templates, so will visit the Accessibility page discussion. In general, navboxes should be compact and not link farms. One I was just looking at had a stack of flags the made the thing twice as tall as it should be. And the width concern applies to all tables. Fools making huge tables should be major-trouted.
