Film History[edit]

Thank you for your invite. I am pretty much a film noir historian, and just added some corrections and additions to the American Mutoscope and Biograph Compnay, an old silent film company's article. I noticed 3 million+ corrections, but there were still some incorrect references, probably oversights. I am also working on others soon.

Thanks, and please feel free to let me know any other information.

IP vandalism[edit]

Hi GChriss. Thanks for messaging me about this. I don't know if anything's really become of it. You'd probably know if another admin blocked the whole IP range for Penn State. The Vincent Gallo article gets edited by a lot of IPs; you could check to see if the same zealot(s) are still active there. If so, talking to your network security expert might be a good idea. If I come across any persistent vandalism from this IP range again, I'll let you know. Cheers! --Fang Aili 說嗎? 03:27, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania :)[edit]

Hey there! Glad to see you registered for Wikimania. Are you done with your term yet? I have some questions and thoughts for you; the Harvard cross-dept computing group is getting excited about wikis. How is everything going at Penn [State]? Hope all's well, and send [...]

Hey GChriss, sorry I haven't gotten back to you. Finals week was surprisingly busy for me (my parents came up at the end of the week for the volleyball tournament), so I wasn't able to meet up with you. I'm starting work on Monday so hopefully I'll be able to figure out soon whether or not it's going to be possible for me to get to Wikimania this year. I'll let you know. --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 13:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey GChriss[edit]

Glad you like the template I am using for welcoming. Welcoming has been one of my approaches to the community and developing a strong encylcopedia. I find that welcomes with a great deal of information are most useful and generally appear to be most appreciated. I did not create the whole thing, I borrowed parts, not much unlike you are now usig it now. Like everything in wikipedia, none of us own anything. Actually, the fact that we share and collaborate as we do is a major draw for me to work/play here. Thanks for your kind words and for the good work you are doing. Best, -- Kukini 04:08, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zapata Corporation[edit]

I just now saw your comment on my page, about Zapata Corporation. Looks like this article is about to go through lots of focus and discussion. Your input is welcomed! I've suggested that it be split into two articles, one on business and the other on politics. What do you think? (I can see some drawbacks to doing this -- it gets away from the gestalt "whole" connectedness, and it may turn the political one into an outlet for partisan warfare. I fear Wikipedia is heading in that direction, on many topics. *sigh*) Anyway, thanks again for your nice comment, very much appreciated! Eugene Banks 17:48, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Beaver and Atherton copyvios[edit]

I really enjoyed your image gallery, but the problem with these two images is that they exactly reproduce copyrighted text by the Penn State Alumni Society.

Traveling to Wikimania[edit]

Hi Laurascudder,

I noticed that you are likely driving to Wikimania from Pittsburg. If you are taking I-80, myself and possibly one other Wikipedian are just a short hop along the way, located in State College, PA. I would be willing to split gas costs, so if you are interested just let me know. Thanks! GChriss 17:41, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've finally settled on driving from Pittsburgh rather than flying, in which case I'll certainly welcome any company. — Laura Scudder 19:09, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note....[edit]

The reason this come up was that the thought occurred to me "wouldn't it be better if the Communist Party of China participated in wikipedia instead of censoring it" but then I realized that this raises a whole host of issues that aren't limited to China. A lot of the issues in getting the Communist Party of China to somehow participate in Wikipedia are going to be faced in getting the Democratic and Republican Parties to participate in wikipedia.

I think that the solution might be to have "interlocutors." When the US and Chinese governments want to brainstorm, they use someone like members of a think tank that speak for themselves, but have close relations with each government. Interlocutors are useful because what they say is unofficial which gives them freedom to actually say useful things.

I suspect that the solution for companies and governments may be to find interlocutors to communicate with wikipedia. Company A might find someone retired and just ask them to participate in wikipedia. That person would have the freedom to speak for themselves, and nothing they say would be official, but they also have close relations with the companies.

Pennsylvania State University Athletics[edit]

There seems to be a belief that pages about schools athletic teams should be titled as they are most commonly known as. I think a more logical name for this page would actual be Penn State Nittany Lions. If you check the other Big Ten schools for example they are listed in this manner ie Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ohio State Buckeyes etc. If you are concern about confusion with Nittany Lion a note can be placed at the beginning of the article. however I don't think many people (at least people familar with US college sports teams names will be confused by the title.Smith03 15:48, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, fair enough. In addition to being clearly distinct from Nittany Lion, a reason that I didn't mention was the ability of Pennsylvania State University Athletics to be broader atricle that can encompass sports facilities, IM teams, non-competitive athletics, etc... GChriss 14:29, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at Minnesota Golden Gophers we have facilities information. As for as IM teams I am not sure that would make anymore sense on Pennsylvania State University Athletics vs PSNL. IMO either term would only mean intercollegitic (sp) teams Smith03 17:04, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, just so you know, I merely formatted what was in this article. I didn't add any additional information. I think I did remove one line that seemed out-of-place. Even though I don't particularly care for the topic, I treated it as objectively as I could. Most of my edits are made for spelling, formatting, punctuation, and such. Personally I think the whole article should be deleted. Schmiteye 23:50, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One thing that is interesting is that I can see some use for establishing a convention that there are no group/corporate accounts on wikipedia. There is something that deeply disturbs me about group/corporate accounts, but I can't figure out exactly what it is.

singpost/video of wikimania[edit]

i saw your post over at the tipline of the signpost. if you are making available a lot of the video from wikimania, might i suggest putting them on google video as well as the commons. JoeSmack Talk 22:07, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for bringing this up -- I hadn't really thought about it. (I will add source, speaker title, and license information to the start of the videos.) I am publishing on the Commons under a GFDL 1.2 / CC-BY 2.5 dual license, both free licenses. Anyone is free to republish on secondary websites, including Google Video. I would upload to Google Video myself, but they don't list Theora as a supported codec, which is the only video format the Commons accepts. I'll give it a try, though. Copyright problems with Image:BewcastleCross1.jpg & Image:BewcastleCross2.jpg[edit]

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I actually got permission from the owners to use them. I'll try to dig up the e-mail and post it at the relevant place. Eixo 16:24, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, please see this page for instructions. Also note that the image needs to be released under a free license, as a simple permission for republication will not do. What would be really neat is to have the copyright holder post the permission on their website for promotion of CC, GFDL, or PD. Thanks, GChriss <always listening><c> 17:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've posted the e-mail on Wikipedia:Successful requests for permission and also sent it to permissions@wikimedia.org. But you're right about the licencing of course. Shave brush article[edit]

If I'd not brought my extraordinary shave brush article to your attention, I doubt that you would have tagged it. In any case, as snooty an advertisement as it may be, I have determined unto myself to purchase for you a quality shave brush and safety razor (or a straight razor, if you can handle one) before the end of the semester so you can experience the effects of wet-shaving for yourself.

I will work on sourcing the page; however, I think that your sanctimoniousness regarding the article--particularly the "snooty" comment--happens to elucidate your self-awareness as a Wikipedia editor. I don't see a problem in the article worth such comments. I would in fact argue that it's a better article by a long shot than most of what's written on Wikipedia.

There may be a speck in my eye, but there's a plank in the eyes of countless others who post articles and edits. Since you and I are friends, I further believe that your editing such an article constitutes a conflict of interest and would suggest you allow another Wikipedia editor to look at it and tag it if her or she will. This way you can focus guiltlessly on the hundreds of thousands of other articles in need of far more work.

I am, of course, Yours sincerely,

The Phyrst[edit]

Hi Chris, I would leave The Phryst's Wikipedia page there. It does need to be cleaned up, but not deleted. I'm not sure if you're a student or a graduate, but i have been at Penn State for 7 years and work at HRB Systems, where the founders started. This place has LOTS of history and means a LOT to alumni. I understand your point about what happens should everyone author an article about their favorite bar—and they have a right to do so. If a bar is not notable, it will show in the articles, and the page should be nominated for deletion. However, I think it's a disservice to take down The Phyrst's article simply because it's new when you have no-name wikipages for things such as Are_You_Hungry, which has little notability listing on the page and has even a menu available. DP Dough deserves more of a page due to its history than this place! Thanks!

Idg101 21:13, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello User:Idg101. Has The Phyrst been the subject of any reputable publications, demonstrating more than local interest? (For example, Gary Cattell and the Willard Building didn't make the cut.) I think The Phyrst deserves a page somewhere, but unfortunately not on Wikipedia. I still love the fries.
I should add that any photographs of The Phyrst interior/exterior would be welcomed at Category:Pennsylvania_State_University in the Commons. Please contact me if you hit any stumbling blocks. Also, does Wikipedia have an article on Are You Hungry? I didn't understand your reference. Thanks, GChriss <always listening><c> 22:31, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I looked it up after reading this: see Are_U_Hungry. That is clearly a self-promoting article on a chain restaraunt. Notehappy 22:51, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Notehappy[reply]

Yes, the article was self-promotional: I have cleaned up the article, although additional citations are still needed. For your consideration, Are U Hungry? has Daily Collegian coverage in the arts section similar to The Phryst. Thanks for bringing this up, GChriss <always listening><c> 01:34, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion wasn't overturned, but deletion review isn't the place to contest a decision of redirect, or so I discovered. Such a consensus would need to be reached via the article talk pages. — PSUMark2006 talk | contribs 06:19, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It also looks like they have swiped a portion of your lion shrine image for their logo. The shadows on the arm are identical. GChriss <always listening><c> 19:24, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The logo has been replaced with an alternative image. GChriss <always listening><c> 14:48, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was doing some research on them of my own and came across this post. Someone on UCSD's version asked some prying questions on the talk page of their FAQ. I tried to answer some of the questions. Anyway, have you figured out adminship yet? I also would like to help keep my institution's site organized.—WAvegetarian (talk) 12:01, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a Ogg Theora title after creation[edit]

I have created an .ogg file (theora/vorbis) using thoggen on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I neglected to edit the Title first, and now it merely says "Title 1". How can I fix this?

hewhocutsdown @@@ gmail ... com —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.250.178.97 (talk) 00:31, 22 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Unfortunately, editing Ogg Theora "comments" (i.e., metadata) is not well supported at the moment. EasyTAG and Amarok seem to be good options for Vorbis streams, but Theora support is not listed. If you are adventurous with the command line, Daniel Holth has written a script that will do the job.
For simple text substitution, directly editing the file with a hex editor may be an option. Search the stream for "Title 1".
Hope this helps, GChriss <always listening><c> 01:22, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright & Cindy Cohn[edit]

Hello GCHRIss, you left me a message and I'm sorry it took so long, but the information about Cindy Cohn that was taken from their website was taken from the EFF site, which is under a license that allows it to be freely copied. Additionally, the author of that content, Cindy Cohn, made a comment letting us know about the license free use. What is funny about this, is that Cindy Cohn is the lead staff lawyer fro the Electronic Frontier Foundation that is the leading organization regarding intellectual property rights on the internet. Let's coordinate, since I'm going to work on her page again and will probably use some of the content from their site, which is available. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ronreed (talkcontribs) 18 May 2007 21:51 (UTC).

Hello Ronreed! Cohn's statement is only partially true: while the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial (CC BY NC) is a "free" license it is not compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Thus the Electronic Frontier Foundation text may not be copied and pasted into the article. Writing from scratch is a good idea here; I am more than happy to help copyedit. Merging of sofia and sophia.[edit]

Hi. Back in march you suggested that sofia and sophia be merged.[2]

I have decided to try to clean up the sophia dab page. And feel that a good place to start is to undo this merge. Sofia has enough entries to stand as a dab page on it's own, and there are too many entries on sophia. Do you have any strong feelings about this?

I will move the people out to a stand alone list, and are not sure if I should make a seperate list for people names sofia and sophia or if this should just be a single list. Taemyr 17:40, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Taking a second look, in March I did not realize that Sofia (disambiguation) and Sophia were spelled differently. How about not merging the two, trimming excess Sophia entries, and moving Sophia to Sophia (disambiguation)? Thanks for the heads up, GChriss <always listening><c> 18:03, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since there is no primary topic WP:MOSDAB suggests the dab page be placed at Sophia. Taemyr 18:12, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds fine to me. Thanks, GChriss <always listening><c> 18:56, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Wikimania-(gil).png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Wikimania-(gil).png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 21:33, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Penn State Wiki[edit]

Hi... saw your project as a pending one on the School and University Projects page in the English langauge Wikipedia. I am registered in the English and Spanish wikipedia as Thelmadatter (my last name). I am a college English prof at ITESM-Campus Toluca. You are still listed as a pending project although the date is from last semester. I saw the links about the wiki on the Wikis page. Last I read, the idea is not supported by Penn State. However, did you go ahead with itanyway? The site exists although I cannot enter because I dont have a Penn State ID, of course.

I ask so I can updage the Projects page and out of curiosity. I am working with Wikipedia extensively this semester. See my user page if youre interested.

Thanks for your time.

Leigh Thelmadatter

Hi Leigh,
I've updated the Penn State Wiki project status on the Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects page. Thanks for asking for an update---I'm not always on my toes. Warmly, GChriss <always listening><c> 01:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Daily Collegian newspaper cover lowres.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Daily Collegian newspaper cover lowres.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:35, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rene Portland[edit]

I'm a Penn State professor and a longtime friend of Rene Portland. I'm not sure it's fair to say (as one of the headlines on her page says) that she always banned lesbians from her team. After Penn State adopted the nondiscriminatory language her policy was not to ask about this. However, she told me that she did have a policy that her players were not to "date each other."

Some may see this as the same as barring lesbians. I see it as more like "don't ask don't tell." I also think that Joe Paterno probably has a similar policy, either tacit or explicit--and that no one here at Penn State would ever challenge him on that. I doubt very seriously if Penn State would have allowed at Beaver Stadium the kinds of vocal protests that occured at the Jordan Center.

Rene's story is also interesting because of her long fight for salary equity between men's and women's team coaches. She struggled for years simply to get paid as much as the men's basketball coaches who were losing many more games. I remember speaking with her the day she negotiated her first "big money" contract. She told me how much bad feeling there seemed to be on the part of "Old Main," i.e., Spanier. Part of me still believes that Spanier wanted to find a way to pull the rug out from under Rene by allowing the GLBT student groups to wage protests against her over time, then waiting for the right moment to fire her. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hohhot1 (talkcontribs) 14:20, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the comment.
The "Homosexuality controversy" section can be edited to the degree that there are verifiable sources that substantiate all information presented. I am aware that finding such citations is non-trivial due to the confidential nature of the internal investigation and out-of-court settlement, but there are other sources that might be appropriate such as records kept by the University Faculty Senate. I encourage you to propose and discuss article-specific changes on the article talk page where they may be considered by volunteer editors; the article can and should be improved for accuracy, nuance, and overall presentation.
The concerns about an antagonistic climate at Penn State should be presented in a public forum such that a consensus is reached and the underlying issues resolved. Onward State is preparing a post based on your comment, and I think other online and traditional venues would also take interest.
I will be attending the screening of "Training Rules" this Thursday so that I may better appreciate the cultural shifts that have taken place over the last several decades. It is indeed a compelling story.

Hi. This little form letter is just a courtesy notice to let you know that a proposal to merge the projects Wikipedia:WikiProject Free images, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use, Wikipedia:WikiProject Moving free images to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia:WikiProject Illustration into the newly formed Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media has met with general support at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Files. Since you're on the rosters of membership in at least one of those projects, I thought you might be interested. Conversation about redirecting those projects is located here. Please participate in that discussion if you have any interest, and if you still have interest in achieving the goals of the original project, we'd love to have you join in. If you aren't interested in either the conversation or the project, please pardon the interruption. :) Thanks. Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:23, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
