Congrats on joining WMF
[edit]Hi Pat. I just read the Signpost article about you joining the WMF. This is great news. I'm very pleased to have you helping the Foundation as I have found you to be one of the most helpful and dedicated editors on the project. Congratulations. 64.40.54.119 (talk) 03:50, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
- Wow! Thanks so much, 64. I hope I can have a positive influence. Your work is not to be slighted either :) PEarley (WMF) (talk) 03:10, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Although I've not seen you before, you seem like a sane and nice person :) VisualEditor must be so much fun, and you seem to be handling it well. Charmlet (talk) 23:52, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, Charmlet. Sane is to be debated, but nice comes with the territory. It is very fun working with VE, and watching it develop. Still some bugs, though - you testers are doing good work. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 00:10, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Bug 50258
[edit]Bingo! I managed to simulate the Bug here (notice how the whole article is bold) in the test page I created, I used the same article and the same modification, this is the result, Thanks. Prabash.Akmeemana 21:34, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Well done, added to the report. You can get updates on it by adding an email to the CC list on the report, if you want to follow it. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:58, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- You'll have to set up a Bugzilla account first, though ;) PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for July 5
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Daniella Kertesz, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Israeli (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

[edit]Of course I will happily contribute if time and deadlines are not a factor for you (I'm not that good under pressure ...and my real-life boss wouldn't be so excited about it either). I am not willing to register at mediawiki.org at the moment so if you have text send me here or the e-mail address of my account or any other way possible and I will send back the translation as soon as I am able to to any online storage place of your chosen. - Lajbi, thank you very much. I have emailed a short text to you for translation. No hurry, please work at your own pace. Don't want to get you in trouble with your boss! Also, a note about MediaWiki - you don't have to register a new account if you want to edit there, your English account will transfer over. But email works fine for me as well. Your recent edits
[edit]Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:
- Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
- With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.
This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.
Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 04:57, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Excuse me for delay. At present, I am not active on English wikipedia and can not help you with translation. You can refer to Persian wikipedia [1] and write your request there, if you have not find someone to help you here. There are a lot of wikipedians who know both language well and may become happy to help you with it.--Seyyed(t-c) 01:45, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, sa.vakilian. I have made a post, and we have some great Farsi wikipedians helping out already. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 20:59, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Thai translation help
[edit]Hi. I'm an old editor who has been on a very long leave of absence... Long story short is that I am an Inclusionist who got fed up with the Deletionists... Does Inclusionist vs. Deletionist tension still radiate forth from every Talk: page in these hallowed halls?
Anyway - send me the personal message that you'd like to have translated into Thai and I'll take a first run at it - than hand it off to my [native speaker] wife for a final polishing.
I'll take a look at the rest of the project as well. Sounds fun!
Please lord, don't let this project be a Deletionist honeypot designed to bring the last of us out of our mountain caves where we've been hiding for nigh ten years - in order to overwhelm and extinguish what remains AStanhope (talk) 06:09, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- (spear-tackles Astanhope) Aha! Now we have you! Off to WikiProject:Inclusionist Reconditioning you go.
- I suppose the Icl./Del. divide is still a constant undercurrent, although I don't spend much time at AfD, so I'm not an expert. There doesn't seem to be the organised camps I noticed when I first started editing, but maybe they're still there in the wiki-shadows.
- Thanks so much for translating the message, I will email it to you pronto. If you're interested in more, the TranslationCentral page has a list of help docs we're trying to get out before the small wikis get the software in mid-August. We don't have a lot of Thai help (well, you're the first to be honest), so, it's all on you! (j/k, I'm trying to track down more Thai editors as we speak) PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:19, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Turkish help needed
[edit]Hello Joseph48, I'm contacting you because we need some Turkish translators to help with the deployment of the new VisualEditor on tr.wikipedia. There are help pages, user guides, and description pages that need translating, as well as the interface itself. The translating work is going on over on MediaWiki: Translation Central. I also need help with a personal message for the Turkish Wikipedians. If you are able to help in any way, either reply here, or head over to TranslationCentral. Thanks for your time, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 22:47, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hello PEarley (WMF), why is mw: being used instead of translatewiki:? Thanks. --joseph msg 08:57, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hello Joseph. We are using both, tranlatewiki.net to translate the actual VE interface (the button labels, the rollover text, etc.) and mediawiki to translate the help documents. We are using mw for that beacuse mw is where the software "lives", so to speak, and is where the help docs will be available in the future. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:03, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Slovenian help needed
[edit]Hi! I have some question about VE. I tried to start using it (here end on sl.wiki). It starts fine on sl.wiki ("Edit source" tab is there), but here I cannot make it work - there is no "Edit source" tab. I check the box labeled "Temporarily disable VisualEditor while it is in beta". I use Google Chrome 28.0.1500.95 m. --Pinky sl (talk) 10:16, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- Try unchecking that box and test it, Pinky sl. On English, the tabs have been renamed - "Edit" for wikitext, "Edit (beta)" for VE. These changes can be made on sl.wiki too, if the editors there desire it. Thank you for testing on sl.wiki - please tell me if you notice any VE problems. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:41, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks.
- Another question - is there any way to see or add in VE commented text (inside <!-- -->)?
- Does TemplateData works in an article if template is called by redirection? In that case in sl: I cannot see descriptions (sl:Buenos Aires uses redirected template.)?
- Pushpin_map starts acting strange in VE (sl:Seattle, Washington)?
--Pinky sl (talk) 10:01, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Pinky sl, a few answers:
- Hidden text support is being worked on: Bug 49603
- Not sure about this one. Does the sl.wiki infobox template have TD added? (I don't know what the template is called in Slovenian :()
- This is Bug 50714. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:31, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Well I have to look into those bugs. Addition info for No.2:
- Hey Pinky sl, a few answers:
No2. sl:Predloga:Infopolje Naselje (infobox settlement ) is currently the only one with TemplateData. sl:Predloga:Infopolje Mesto is redirect to Infopolje Naselje. Buenos Aires uses Infopolje Mesto. --Pinky sl (talk) 17:42, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Any information about this one? --Pinky sl (talk) 17:47, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Looking into it ... PEarley (WMF) (talk) 18:16, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, Pinky sl, here's the situation with redirected temps and TemplateData. Currently, the TD functionality of a temp is not transferred to the redirected version of the template. This can be fixed by tweaking the template name in the article to avoid the redirect and point to the target template, but that could represent a lot of work for heavily used redirected templates. There was some discussion here about solutions: [2], but no resolution. I ping User:Okeyes (WMF) on this; he's the TemplateData guru. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:17, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- I can't think of a useful solution at our end, unfortunately. Sounds like a good bugzilla bug :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 19:07, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- D'oh, it's already filed - Bug 50964. Pinky sl, this is rated high importance, so I hope for a solution in one of our upcoming updates. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:00, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

- Thanks you for answers. On our Wikipedija we teach users that the simplest way to include Infobox into an article is transferring it from :en Wikipedia. We are small community and we do not have enough energy and time to create our own templates. I take care of updating them and adding new ones on :sl side. So many articles include redirected templates. --Pinky sl (talk) 08:16, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- I'll keep you in the loop about progress on that bug - you can also set up a bugzilla account and add your email to the CC list if you desire. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, as the problem is probably shared with more of the smaller Wikipedias. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 19:44, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Save your changes dialog box
[edit]I am writing User guide for :sl users. So, I noticed something strange when I click green button "Save page" (:sl Shrani stran). Inside Save your changes dialog box (:sl Shranite vnesene spremembe) there is some stuff that belogs to standard wikitext editor (blue and red box). --Pinky sl (talk) 06:36, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- Very interesting. I'll do some screenshots and show them to the developers ... Again, thanks for reporting. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 23:47, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, thank you. --Pinky sl (talk) 18:09, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- We have figured out what happened with this. In February, a sl.wiki admin added code for a custom save box for sl.wikipedia to the MediaWiki documentation. VE is using this instead of its standard save dialog. A few other wikipedias are in the same situation; we are talking about whether a site-wide fix is the best thing; if not, I think I have figured out a manual fix for the sl.wiki save dialog. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:22, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- We're discussing this right now, will update. And thanks so much for working on the User Guide - it will make life much easier for sl.wiki editors. We are also discussing potential rollout dates for sl.wiki. Do you have any thoughts? One date we are looking at is September 9th. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 18:16, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Not until I finish our User guide (text it is almost done, but images is still in english version; then I must also prepare some basic TemplateData - at least for editing references). As I said, we are small community. What do you mean with roll out date? --Pinky sl (talk) 06:30, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- By "rollout date", I mean the day when all sl.wiki users will have the two tabs available, like on english now (i.e. moving from "opt-in", as it is now, where you have to select a preference to have it showing, to "opt-out", where both edit buttons are available, and you have to select a preference to make VE go away). Sorry for using developers jargon! It looks like the potential day is going to be later, more like the 16th or 23rd of September. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:22, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, we now have a guide for making screenshots if you're interested: mw:Help:Screenshots PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:28, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Visual Editor update
[edit]Hi PEarly! I think I can do it.--Dipa1965 (talk) 22:26, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
The text in parentheses is hoped that it will prevent users from responding you in Greek :) --Dipa1965 (talk) 22:28, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Indonesian translation
[edit]Greetings Indonesian Wikipedia editors from the Wikimedia Foundation. I am posting to let you know about the VisualEditor (VE) editing interface. It is a new, visual way to edit Wikipedia. We would like to deploy VE on the Indonesian Wikipedia soon, and I would like to get Tagalog editors' opinions on the new platform. To test VE, you can enable it by going to "Preferences" "Editing" --> "enable Visual Editor". We welcome your feedback, and would like to know about any problems or "bugs" experienced on id.wiki. Several other wikis are part of a rollout on September 24, we would like to add Indonesian to the list but would like to hear from the editing community here first. After the rollout, the button for the new editor will be displayed side-by-side with the button to edit using wikitext. Thank you for your comments, and happy editing,

Hey thanks for the notification regarding the need for Greek translators for the Visual Editor. I'll try to have a look and see whether I can do something. Cogiati (talk) 21:24, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, Cogiati, for helping. If you need any help, let me know. Right now, it is important that the pages that have already been translated are copied over to Greek Wikipedia. There's some guidance on this page: VE Localization. I'll be helping out with this for el.wiki on Monday. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 15:48, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Re: Acehnese help
[edit]Hello, there!
Thank you for contacting me, but from all the three languages I was very poor and only covered a few words or sentences. My advice please contact:

They are active sysop there and native speaker for its language. Best regard. Wagino 20100516 (talk) 08:33, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Sorry
[edit]Hi PEarley! I'm here to tell you an "Excuse me" because I told that I would help you to translate some Persian language information but I couldn't because of many exams that I had in high school. I'll be very happy to help you in the future if you needed me.Keivan.fTalk 21:03, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- Keivan, no excuses needed! Schoolwork is more important than Wikipedia! Thank you for dropping by. We've still got a few messages left to translate into Farsi, you can see them here: Farsi VE User Guide The ones marked "outdated" means someone translated them in the summertime, but there has been small changes to VisualEditor's layout that need to be updated. If you have time to help before school gets busy again, please do! And please contact me if you have more questions. Mamnūnam! PEarley (WMF) (talk) 02:50, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

What was this message about?
[edit]You apparently sent me a message via bot, about harassment, that only has red links in it. Was this a mistake? --Tryptofish (talk) 22:59, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

- @Davey2010:, a few days is fine. We're looking to close this Friday, if we get sufficient numbers (we've set 100 as the minimum, but we'd like more). Thanks for your input! Patrick Earley (WMF) (talk) 18:23, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, Okie dokie I'll be way done before friday but didn't know if you know it might close for instance tomorrow or wednesday, Thanks for the link anyway :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:35, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
Survey
[edit]Thank you for sending me the survey. I stopped filling it in. Why is the gender I identify with relevant for a survey about improving AN/I? I am a potato. And why do we have to sign up for the survey in order to receive the link? The WMF has a long history of using loaded questions, selection bias and misrepresentation of data in order to ignore the wishes of the community. Surveys are something the WMF is extremely bad at. It is Friday, do not close this survey for at least another week or so. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 18:09, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @The Quixotic Potato:. The demographic questions, including the gender question, are standard practice in surveys as they allow data to be sorted to indicate differences of opinion among different groups, regions, and in this case, Wikimedia experience. We created a signup page as we are doing targeted outreach through massmessage to two groups - folks with heavy participation at AN/I, and folks with minimal, but some, edits to AN/I. Avoiding wide dissemination of the survey link beyond folks with AN/I experince, and especially off-wiki dissemination, is important in terms of keeping the data reliable. Mailing the link is the best method to safeguard against that. As to the closure, the survey has been open since Nov. 28, and we've surpassed the minimum completion rate of 100 finished responses. Patrick Earley (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Just because something is standard practice doesn't mean it is a good idea. Maybe I misunderstand, potatoes know very little about human genders, but I would assume it is rather impolite to ask questions about gender identification in situations where that is completely irrelevant. I think that allies generally understand that the over-emphasis on the importance of gender in our current culture is not a good thing. Maybe I am wrong, I am not an expert. You wrote "100 finished responses". If the group that gives feedback is that small and ~90% of our users identifies as male then that means you have asked ~9 women their opinion (see that pie chart, stolen from the Gender bias on Wikipedia article, which seems to claim that transsexual/transgender people are not male or female)...
- Your data is currently not reliable so there is no way you can keep it reliable like you claimed. In IT we call it garbage in, garbage out. I already posted the link on the Village Pump so everyone can contribute. Extrapolating the opinions of 9 people to all female users of Wikipedia will give you silly results because the sample size is way too small. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 19:04, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Lemme guess, you arrived at the number 100 because it is a nice round number, and easily achievable. Please read Sample size determination and https://www.qualtrics.com/blog/determining-sample-size/. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 19:56, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Determining the ideal sample size for a qualitative survey is difficult for small populations (in this case, Enwiki editors with at least one edit to AN/I in the last year). We also have to balance the number of responses with the practical ability to processes the information (specifically the free-text answers) and present it in a timely way. We set 100 as a minimum to give us a data set that will have depth and quality, and would represent 10% of the number of editors we identified in two queries of AN/I - people with <5 posts but more than 1 to the board, and people who have filed or participated in multiple reports over the year. We also looked at our previous Admin Confidence survey, and the quality of data we got there in that sample size. Patrick Earley (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Are you claiming that ~9 is a decent sample size for female Wikipedians? If so, then that is silly. If not, then how are you going to compare people based on their gender identity? You claimed that that was the reason for including the question about gender identity, right? Quote: "The demographic questions, including the gender question, are standard practice in surveys as they allow data to be sorted to indicate differences of opinion among different groups"... How can you indicate differences in opinion when comparing Wikipedians who identify as male with Wikipedians who identify as female when you have just ~9 people who identify as female? - Am I the only one who finds this constant interrogation rather unnecessary? The graph he provided was from a different survey over three years ago. I think it might be best to let the data be collected and then raise questions once you actually have it, instead of nagging about what ifs. Nihlus 21:18, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

- Patrick, I'm not sure where this constant assertion that you only received surveys from 9 female Wikipedians is coming from (I assume the old graph), but do you know when the survey is planned to end so that this misinterpretation can be clear up? Thanks. Nihlus 21:29, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Basic math. Note that ~9 <> 9. See also the comment dated 18:23, 4 December 2017 (above). (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 21:33, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
I'm ending my day shortly, so don't have more time to engage on this. And to be frank, Quixotic Potato, the aggressive nature of the questioning is problematic. Nihlus, I'll be closing the survey shortly after writing this. In short, we will have more than 9 folks who identify as female in the data set. But not large amounts more - this is indicative of the relative absence of women on our projects. Patrick Earley (WMF) (talk) 22:57, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Sleep well, and please reply tomorrow. It is rather insulting to pretend that the way I asked these questions is the problem instead of your inability to answer these questions in a way that satisfies us both and does not reflect negatively on the survey methodology. You seem to be trying to make it personal but if you scroll up you'll notice I criticized the WMF and the survey; not you as a person (I don't even know who you are nor who created the survey). If you have 174 people with finished responses (everyone who signed up); that would still mean there would be only ~15.66 females in the data set. How can you indicate differences in opinion when comparing Wikipedians who identify as male with Wikipedians who identify as female when you have such a tiny group of people who identify as female? If we agree that that is impossible then the gender identity question is pointless, right? (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 23:10, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- I wasn't gonna comment .... but can you seriously stop with the interrogation?, If you're unhappy with the question then don't answer it it's that simple, Patrick has noted your concerns so constantly interrogating him (and constantly updating your post so he'll see your message in the morning[5]) isn't going to achieve anything and your edits here are more disruptive than helpful, Without sounding disrespectful you've made your point so the best thing you can do is walk away and improve the encyclopedia like the rest of us. –Davey2010Talk 13:46, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
