Convention churches[edit]

I shall indeed be brushing up on Wikipedia as the days wear on, but be warned that I am prepared to defend the edits I have made. I don't wish to turn the article into an apologia for the church, but a good part of the article is hearsay or biased or nonsense.

"The church is sometimes confused with the Cooneyites" - By who? Adding "in the literature" certainly helps. By your own admission you're going back 25 years.

If the statement must stand I would - a) take it out of the opening paragraph - the subject SHOULD be included in the article, no question on that, and Cooney is referenced in the history.

Perhaps a section comparing the theology of the church to other denominations with which it is sometimes confused? Groups with common historical roots include the Faith Mission, the Plymouth Brethren, the Cooneyites. (Are there others emanating from Ireland in the late 19th, early 20th?)

Well, there is WP:RUS which is currently used for transliterating names from Russian into English... Mírnyj átam as you put, is not a very commonly used transliteration system, and somewhat incorrect: there should be an atom not atam. According to WP:RUS, Russian "мирный атом" should be transliterated as mirny atom. Hope that clears it up, —dima/s-ko/ 17:34, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edit to Partnership minyan[edit]

Hi Tomer! an edit was made to Partnership minyan adding the following paragraph:

Recently in the JOFA 10th Anniversary International Conference on Feminism & Orthodoxy, three members of these minyanim (Elitzur Bar-Asher, Michal Bar-Asher Siegal and Alanna Copper), in a session under the title: "Beyond Women Issue: Partnership Minyanim Engages Orthodoxy," articulated for the first time the methodology of the halachic decision process and the ideology behind these minyanim. <ref>[http://www.geretz.org/partnership_minyan.htm "Orthodox Conference explores "partnership minyan"],''The Jewish State''</ref>

I don't have any problem with the reliability of the media source, which contains excerpts from the JOFA paper which could legitimately added to the article. The paper itself, if it were published, could be cited and its content excerpted. But it doesn't seem to me that the mere presentation of an unpublished paper in a conference -- with nothing about the content, just the presentation of a paper and a claim the paper is a first -- is appropriate encyclopedia content for this article. (I also disbelieve the claim of first publication. For example, Tamar Ross wrote about these topics in her 2004 book Expanding the Palace of Torah, although doubtless not in as much detail). I want to be helpful to these people and if they have value to add and can reliably source it, I want to them to get their content in and they're welcome to cite any acceptable publication. However, I feel that simply adding a paragraph about the existence and virtues of an unpublished paper without meaningfully describing what it says on the article topic is not appropriate encyclopedia content and is possibly WP:SOAP. I'd appreciate a second opinion on this issue as well as your input about how to proceed. Best, --Shirahadasha 18:49, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tomer, User:Dandelion1, who replied to my comment with the "edit away" remark, is the article's author and principle creator of its content. Hi, drifting through the American History project looking for a second opinion, I came across your post of WP:PR for McCarthy. Your bias[edit]

One week? Not necessary. But don't give me veiled threats. I will cite the following examples:

  1. When WP:NPOV butts heads with WP:CON, NPOV wins every time. If POV-pushers end up "disenfranchised" in the process, I, for one, consider that to be an excellent precedent. Tomertalk 17:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC) Your response to Agha Nader [1] regarding Iranian editors at The 300 (film).[reply]
  2. The remark is based upon nationality, but reading through the article's talkpage, I find numerous accusations of POV, including against you. If you're complaining because you feel Miskin's remarks constitute a violation of WP:NPA, that's one thing—I don't see a violation of NPA, although I do see some failure to WP:AGF, and I would have to agree that his lumping all Iranian together as biased wrt this article, simply because of their nationality, is theoretically somewhat disingenuous. Nothing I'm seeing on the article's talkpage, however, warrants classification here as an "incident". You asked a leading question, and got the answer you hoped to. Congratulations. You asked to be insulted and got what you wanted. How is that anyone's problem but your own? Tomertalk 17:57, 8 April 2007 (UTC) A rather bad faith response to a legitimate query, wouldn't you agree? [2][reply]
  3. Assumption of bias based on nationality does not constitute "racism". There is no more an "Iranian race" than there is a "Jewish race", and if Jewish editors were insisting that Judaism never had animal sacrifices, or that Jews had never forcibly converted people, or that Jewish history consists exclusively of happy shiny people, yes, definitely, it would be alright to disenfranchise them from editing a "Jewish" related article—clearly they are incapable of doing so either rationally or within the confines of WP:NPOV. The remark is not racist, it simply indicates a prejudice...and, again, the remark never would have been made, had you not elicited it. You can't hit someone and then cry "foul!" when they hit back. Except maybe in Iran? Tomertalk 18:23, 8 April 2007 (UTC) A clear and outright denial of racism and prejudice against Iranians. [3][reply]

Those should suffice as evidence of your bias in this situation, to which I was advising Agha Nader. Don't worry, I'm beginning to get used to such biases. It seems to be "business as usual" these days on WP, and apparently I'm "easily offended". But I say it like it is. Khorshid 03:57, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this page, User:TShilo12/RFC/Khorshid, you should either start an RFC or remove this page at once. As far as I'm concerned, this relates to the above issue (as another piece of evidence of bias) and constitutes an attack page. Khorshid 04:08, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have made no personal attacks and you are free to do as you wish. I am not going to respond to someone who is keeping tabs on edits - see WP:STALK. I am free to contact as many admins as I wish to alert them to this matter. Furthermore, I will no longer respond to you. Khorshid 04:57, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its unfortunate that you think I stalked you there. I did not, I can assure you. I was editing David Irving and then went to the Holocaust denial category and started looking around. But you admit that you created the page to "keep an eye on me". That's stalking. I invite you to remove it as a show of good faith. Khorshid 05:08, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If your remarks sincerely had no ill-intentions towards Iranians (and were not intended to minimise the prejudicial situation at the article in question), and my interpretation was off base, then I will assume good faith and take back my comments. Like I said, they appear to me in a bad light, but again, if that was not what you intended, I will AGF since you are willing to do the same. Khorshid 05:21, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tomer, Shavua Tov: Please see my concerns at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism#User:Wasserman. Thank you, IZAK 13:22, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like it! I have a few comments:

  1. The area you have Jews dispersed in China is too large, I think. They should be concentrated in Kaifeng, along the Silk Road, and in a few of the coastal cities. There were not, to my knowledge, any Jews in the broad areas of countryside you have shaded in, esp. after the massacres at the end of the Tang dynasty.
  2. Ditto Ethiopia. Jews were probably limited to the area around Gondar province.
  3. Ditto Timbuktu. Should be much smaller area.
  4. Other than the Yemenites and the Habbani Jews in Hadramaut, I am not aware that there were any Jews in the Arabian Peninsula.
  5. The Jews had been expelled from England in 1290, and not re-admitted until the 1650s. While a few lapsed conversos may have arrived in England from the Spanish persecutions in the late 1490s and 1500's, that would be after the time of this map.
  6. I think you have the Mountain Jews extending too far north.
  7. There were some Italian Jews in the Crimea. See Ghisolfi.
  8. I don't think there were significant Jewish populations in Scandinavia until the 1700s.
  9. The map is missing the Baleric islands, Aegean islands and Malta, all of which had Jewish communities.
  10. The Jewish community in Sardinia was Sephardic, I think.
  11. Armenia had a distinctive Jewish community. Right now they appear as a mix of Romaniote, Kurdish and Iraqi Jews.

Bob Dylan[edit]

I have been laboring to get Dylan removed from List of converts to Christianity.

The current debate is going on here.

This is an example of my argument, my most recent post:

C.Logan -- The list as presently configured is in violation of WP:NOT#SOAPBOX. You have been asked to change it. Many people on the Bob Dylan Talk page have asked that Bob Dylan's name be removed from this list. Why hasn't that change been made? Why hasn't Bob Dylan been removed from the list? Your assertion that the list should contain any person who has ever converted, even if they are no longer Christian, is an illogical contrivance that does not serve normal encyclopedic purposes and is advocacy for Christianity. Christianity and Judaism happen to be two different religions. Christianity is a religion which asserts that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. Judaism asserts that Jesus Christ is not the Messiah. Bob Dylan happens to be a Jew. Bob Dylan's identity implies that Jesus Christ is not the Messiah. You are conflating mutually exclusive assertions in the definition that you have contrived for this list, making it into a grotesquery. It is not as if you are unaware that Bob Dylan's status has changed. One can accept that a change in religious status that you are unaware of can mistakenly creep into a list or remain on a list because you are unaware of it. But it is incumbent on an editor to remove a name if they are clearly aware that the person is not in fact a Christian, but in fact in this case is a Jew. This list should logically be a list not only of those who have ever converted but of those who are still Christians. It is promotion of Christianity to include the prominent Jew, Dylan on this list. Any other names that come to light as no longer being Christian should also be removed. The list is not a billboard for advertising Christianity. Please understand that I mean Christians no harm. But the twisting of logic is destructive to an encyclopedia, and the promotion of religion is totally out of place in Wikipedia. Bus stop 09:50, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Religion in EU[edit]

Thanks for your comments. What I would like to do is replace the present comments on genocide etc. with a more general reference to ant-semitism, with links to more appropriate articles, where any missing detais could be added. For the time being, I would concentrate in the EU article on some Jewish population figures. There is a lot of scope for more information on Judaism in the European Union, but I don't think I'm very qualified to add it. If no-one else does, I'll try to do some research and come back to it later. --Boson 22:10, 3 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi TShilo12, I am now convinced that the article should have been deleted. But I think the status that Cohen's arguments (shared by many others) enjoy in the scholarship was quite downplayed in the AfD discussion. I think I made a mistake in choosing the title of the article. I can discuss this issue in great detail if you would like. --Aminz 09:01, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Would you please let me know what you think about the relation between scholarship and politics? In particular about the following quote from a review of the book "Muslim Authors on Jews and Judaism" published in the Journal of Semitic Studies(Oxford University Press):

The relationships between the Jews and the Arabs throughout history have been the subject of numerous studies over many centuries. However, as long as the continuous Arab-Israeli conflict has not found a solution, historians will search through the past in order to find new evidence to prove the antiquity of the tension between the two communities and to illuminate its causes. The vicissitudes which have marked the lives of the Jews who lived under Arab rule or side-by-side with Muslims add to the complexity of the issue, and a great many of the assertions about Arab-Jewish relations made by scholars and amateurs alike are sheer speculation. This is particularly true of writers who strongly identify with either camp and have become emotionally involved in the subject. Consequently, the views they usually hold are often unbalanced, if not biased.

Next, would you please let me know what you personally think about the status of Jews under the Muslim rule as compared with their status under Christian rule? Which one was more relaxed? Or were the approximately the same? Thanks --Aminz 09:12, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tomer, I came across this "user" page at User:Barak Kaiba and I cannot make heads or tails of it. Barak Kaiba (talk · contribs)'s don't go beyond writing up this piece of of self-glorification. Please tell me you are not confusing this user with User:Grace Note – they are not the same user, and indeed they are very different; your use of the abbreviation "GN" gives me a worrying suspicion that you may have done so – Gurch 13:52, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just pinging you again; this is a rather substantial issue – as far as I can tell you're effectively voicing your opposition against someone completely unrelated to the discussion – so even if you're not planning on contributing to the discussion further I'd appreciate a response as quickly as possible. I don't believe you're at fault, it's a simple mistake, but a significant one. Thanks – Gurch 01:18, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sheesh. Gurch, enhance your calm. Your unmittigated advocacy is becoming tiresome. After some of the remarks you've made, I'm inclined to strike my previous rationale for "oppose" and replace it purely with "if Gurch is supporting, I must oppose". You're verging on trollish with some of the things you're saying, and in many cases, I think, far overstepping the bounds of WP:DICK and WP:AGF. Chill out and let the RfA stand on its own merits. At this point, if it ultimately fails, from the stance of "numbers games", it's going to be because of your activities more than anything else. Please, just settle down. You're becoming irritatingly shrill. Tomertalk 05:06, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
That would have made the discarding of your vote as irrelevant all the more easier, certainly. I notice you still haven't contested my claim that you mistook Gracenotes for another user, which makes no sense; if you did in fact oppose his adminship you would have changed your rationale to reflect the actual reason, whereas if you did not oppose it you would surely have at least stricken your comment and possibly left a comment in another section.
I'm less concerned with "advocacy" than preventing such gross mistreatment as a candidate being granted or refused adminship based on the actions of a completely different user. I removed a support vote from someone who voted twice and would happily have commented on the votes of supporters who had mistaken Gracenotes for someone else had I spotted any; while those who provide little or no comment could well have done this there are none that I could be sure of.
I don't see my rationale as trolling but rather as perfectly logical; Gracenotes had no contact with the user you brought up as rationale for your opposition and wasn't even active then; Grace Note was – Gurch 16:05, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wausau, Florida[edit]

You reverted some edits on the page for this town, edits that had themselves been a reversion of edits from an anonymous editor. The anonymous editor had changed the town's population to 23,398 from just 398. Someone reverted this, and you then switched it back to 23,398. I'm not familiar with the town, but am nearly 100% sure that the 398 version is correct: the town looks to be that size on Google Earth, the 398 number is confirmed elsewhere, and the 23,398 number is greater than the total number of people who live in the county. I'm not leaving this message to hector you, but because I've never been to this town and I really can't be certain. Do you know one way or the other? 75.183.8.246 21:29, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hasidic Mediation Cabal case needs serious help[edit]

Hi Tomer: You may perhaps be able to help solve the logjam at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2007-04-29 Mezhbizh (Hasidic dynasty) between Klezmer (talk · contribs) and ChosidFrumBirth (talk · contribs). An additional question being raised is if Wikipedia should define a "Hasidic dynasty," see Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2007-04-29 Mezhbizh (Hasidic dynasty)#Response to mediator: from Klezmer. Any attention and help you may wish to render would be greatly appreciated. Wikipedia has gained many diverse articles about Hasidic Judaism that can be found nowhere else on the web, and this case may help to resolve and establish some important precedants and guidelines. But right now, the matter is stalled and needs outside help before it heads for more serious mediation. Thank you, IZAK 12:42, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

fix please[edit]

on Image:G77countries.png, Marajó, Hainan, and the Argentine half of Tierra del Fuego are not colored properly. please fix and reupload. Cheers, Tomertalk 04:39, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uf. I see also that Nicaragua, Jamaica and Burundi are also not colored as they should be... Tomertalk 04:43, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Argh! Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga also show up large enough to be colored on the map...especially if the effort can be made to indicate that Bahrain is a member... Cheers, Tomertalk 04:49, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Marajó, Hainan, and the Argentine half of Tierra del Fuego are properly colored now
Nicaragua, Jamaica, Fiji are now properly colored
Burundi was properly colored. Thats the blob to the south but Rwanda was not. I fixed that.
Tonga and Samoa are not visible on the blank version of the map (as far as I can see) so I cannot color them. Because it is at the middle of nowhere (Pacific) I am unable to pinpoint its location. If you can provide me which ones I am to color, I can do it.
You may need to refresh your browser to properly view the changes
Is there any way else I can help?
-- Cat chi? 15:19, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Actually, if you look at a map of the Pacific, you'll see that Samoa and Tonga are the only things visible east of Fiji (at least on the rhs of the map.  :-) Tomertalk 18:09, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, besides Samoa and Tonga, the dots in the Indian Ocean, northeast and east of Madagascar, respectively, are the Seychelles and Mauritius. The Bahamas are not colored, and should be, but Puerto Rico is, and should not be. And...that's all she wrote!  :-) Tomertalk 23:05, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All marked. Puerto Rico demarked. -- Cat chi? 23:38, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Question...the article for the image states that Palestine is a member of the G77. [citation needed] calls... Any ideas? Tomertalk 22:39, 30 May 2007 (UTC) nm. found. Tomertalk 22:44, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... [5] does count Palestine as a member. Would you mind reviewing that map and the list? -- Cat chi? 22:46, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
The list includes Palestine, which is not only not a member of the UN, it is not (and never has been) a country. Therefore, the West Bank, presently marked in green on the map, probably should not be. Marking the WBank as a stand-in of sorts for Palestine, assumes the outcome of status talks which are, presently, completely stalled. Cheers, Tomertalk 22:52, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The West Bank is currently considered under international law to be de jure a territory not part of any state. The United Nations Security Council,[1] the United Nations General Assembly,[2] the International Court of Justice,[3] and the International Committee of the Red Cross[4] refer to it as occupied by Israel.
Not sure if I want to do that. We have a source (official one) that calls it to be a member. I'd like to know more about special circumstances involving Palestine before taking any action. -- Cat chi? 23:14, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you're referring to by "[n]ot sure if I want to do that." We have an official source that calls it a member of an organization...but that's Palestine, which is a group of organizations, not a country. Regardless, even if the outcome of status talks assigns the West Bank (occupied 1948-1967 by Jordan, occupied 1967-2007ff by Israel) to a new country called "Palestine", the West Bank is not presently Palestine, it is presently the West Bank of the Jordan River, and therefore should not be colored. It presently is. Tomertalk 23:31, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. -- Cat chi? 23:39, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I was asked to make a large number of edits like that by User:Zscout370. Pronunciation of Hebrew according to the Aqademya[edit]

Greetings: This is something as to which I've been curious lately, and I'm wondering if you might be able to enlighten me. Do you know the Aqademya's positions/prescriptions concerning the "proper" pronunciation of modern Hebrew? If so, I'll go more in-depth with what I would like to know. Sorridom 17:59, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. That answers a lot of questions for me, though it creates some as well. Particularly, I've heard several times of pharyngeal articulation being the "proper" and/or "official" way of pronouncing the ח and ע, and of an alveolar trill being "preferred" by the Aqademya for ר. Tavistock disambiguation page[edit]

Hi, I see you moved the article for the town in Devon to Tavistock, Devon and created a disambig page at [[Tavistock]]. You will be pleased to know that I have now spent 8 hours fixing almost all the wikilinks (about 200 or so) which your move rendered incorrect. One of them should have pointed to the Tavistock in Canada, a handful to the former Parliamentary constituency (which you had omited from the disambig page), and a couple to the (likewise omitted by you) Tavistock Clinic. May I suggest that next time you move a page in this way you read Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links and then consider 1) is the move entirely necessary, and 2) maybe you could fix some of the misdirected links resulting from your actions. DuncanHill 16:09, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply. I have no idea whatsoever why you tell me to read the placename conventions - I did not create the original article, just fixed the mess resulting from your move. DuncanHill 16:22, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re Tavistock[edit]

Good job and kudos on your hard work. In the future, please read the placename naming conventions. kthxbye Tomertalk 16:19, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was just giving you some equally unneeded advice. I haven't had time to do much editing on Wikipedia of late, as you can plainly see, since you've obviously been going through my contributions. If you're unhappy that it took you so long to, to paraphrase you, fix the mess I made, perhaps you don't understand how wikipedia works. If everyone took the same unnecessarily hostile and condescending tone as you have, Wikipedia would fall apart in a week. Tomertalk 16:26, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You have made plenty of edits after your unnecessary move of Tavistock, not one of which was concerned with correcting the links which you made invalid. If you had bothered to mention the London disambiguation page in your first message above, I would not have felt it necessary to reply to you in the way I did. I corrected one grammatical error made by you today. DuncanHill 16:31, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If Chambers is the only dictionary you can find that defines "kidnap" as a noun, I think characterizing my saying it isn't a noun barely qualifies as a grammatical error...if anything, it strengthens my position. Regardless, I doubt even Chambers bothers to try to declare "abduction" a verb (although it wouldn't surprise me terribly if they did), so "abduction" should be less questionable as a word choice.
As for my edits since Tavistock, you'll note that, with the exception of my dubiously entertaining discussion with you, I have not spent a great deal of time engaged in editing. My edits have, instead, with the exception of the TfD discussion, been itty bitty little things I've caught in passing. As for the way you replied, your reply was not nearly so aggravating as your initial message was. Anyways. Are you done with Tavistock? Or do you want some help finishing up? I have about half an hour I could spend more productively IRL, but if you want I can help you with that or with some other project of your choosing. Regards, Tomertalk 16:38, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kidnap as a noun. Chambers Dictionary is the one I had to hand, OED has it as a noun too. Maybe this is a difference between British and American usages. Kidnap is commonly used as a noun in British usage. I am insufficiently familiar with American usage or dictionaries to make proper comparison. Chambers does not list abduction as a verb. Maybe you should acquire a copy.
I've heard kidnap used as a noun by Brits, but always assumed it was substandard usage. Perhaps it really is just a BrE/AmE difference, I don't know. Tomertalk 17:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I took a quick look at your edit history to see if you had been active since the Tavistock move, and saw that you had, but had not fixed any of the misdirected links. This did irritate me - I do feel that when an editor makes a move he or she should check "what links here" and at least make a start on correcting wikilinks.
I was in the midst of a project that had something to do with the Tavistock in Ontario, which is the only reason I went to the article...I wanted to know where it was so I could figure out what timezone they were in. I didn't have time to do much else, and as I found out yesterday, everything I did for the client concerned ultimately turned out to be a colossal waste of time, since I was missing two critical pieces of information. Suckysuckysucky. I concur that efforts should be made to straighten out links when pages are moved, and if you dig deeply enough into my edit history, you'll find that I've expended a great deal of effort in this exercise in the past. You just happened to land on the exception. Tomertalk 17:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The most recent edit you had made had an edit summary which, to me, made no sense as you declared "kidnap is not a noun". This irritated me further.
    Prozac?  ;-) Tomertalk 17:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • In short, I could (and probably should) have phrased my initial message to you in a more conciliatory tone, but the substance of what I said I stand by. Misdirected links devalue the work we all do on Wikipedia, making it a less useful resource, and undermining the work of others. To make one edit that corrupts 200 articles, and then do nothing about it is not the way to help Wikipedia grow. DuncanHill 16:52, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know and understand... I've gotten irritated w/ fellow editors in the past myself. I think "corrupts" is a bit overboard, but I sympathize with the aggravation. I've got a touch of OCD myself. :-p Tomertalk 17:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, I'm off to Cubs now, I see you've been fixing the remaining bad links for Tavistock - Thanks :) DuncanHill 16:55, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, and my time is up. What remains is mostly irrelevant or in userspaces where I'm not sure what the editors wanted. I've left messages for those editors on their talkpages. Good luck with the cub scouts. Regards, Tomertalk 17:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh. One more[edit]

The link in User:Emijrp/Coord is supposed to be to Tavistock, Devon, but I can't get the monstrous page to open. If you could try it, or leave User:Emijrp a note, that'd be grand. Cheers, Tomertalk 17:20, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It must be huge - I can't get into it either. DuncanHill 20:42, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, for now we'll hafta lump it, I guess. It's not in articlespace anyways. Meanwhile, I've left a note at es:Usuario discusión:Emijrp#en:Tavistock. If that elicits no response, I'll write it in Spanish. If that doesn't work, I'll just forget about it and move on. Anyhoo... Cheers, Tomertalk 03:53, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

10/40 window map[edit]

It's been a long time, but I am pretty sure I made the map in question from a different source website than the one you cited. Though naturally I do not recall which one, it was linked from the article at that time and had the countries exactly as I colored them on the map. I checked three times to be sure I had it right. I suppose with this new source I should fix the image, which I will get to soon. Thanks for the notification. Danthemankhan 23:16, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your accusations[edit]

You need to stop making vague and unsupported accusations of anti-Semitism against editors and admins you disagree with ([6]). If you have some evidence that someone's an anti-Semite, that's one thing. Smearing a large group of people, apparently largely because you don't agree with them, is inappropriate and, if it continues, likely to be dealt with harshly. European People[edit]

I gotten into a minor argument on Talk:European people about whether Ashkenazim are an European ethnic group. The claim (which I have challenged) is that because Jews come from the Middle East and seldom intermarry with "native" Europeans, we can speak of "European Jews" but not say that Jews are a European ethnic group. This sounds like a matter of semantics; I personally do not have such a strong investment in the view, but I do know some hold the view and for me it is a matter of NPOV to acknowledge it. However, in the context of other debates on this page and other articles, I think what is at stake is a highly racialized notion of ethnicity that has been used to justify viewing Jews as permanent outsiders in Europe - a view that in light of the twentieth century cannot be innocent. Tribute to "the Marine"

I would like to pay a small tribute in this edition to Tony "the Marine". Editing since May 24, 2004, he has been one of our project's most active editors and has become one of Wikipedia's most recognized writers. He has authored over 400 articles, including 4 Featured Articles, 1 Featured List, 10 Good Articles, and 28 DYKs. His name has appeared in newspapers and magazines and has been mentioned by politicians and artists. He has brought Puerto Rico's history and its people to the web. He has shown the world that Puerto Ricans have done much more than just be gangsters and drug dealers. He has shown the world that we have contributed to history and the world just as much as any other group of people.

On September 29, 2007, Tony announced that we would not be writing for Wikipedia anymore. We, the members of this project, are sad that he will not be able to continue to spread the word of Hispanics' contributions here on the web, but I, for one, feel honored that he has entrusted us with the duty of continuing and improving his excellent work.

Tony, rest assured that your contributions, your wisdom, and the help you provided to all of us when we were new users will be remembered for generations. Que Dios te bendiga, Tony, y que tu recompensa sea grande en el Reino de los Cielos.

User:YItzhak Hudas[edit]

Hello Tomer. You are right, my tone with this user was not good. The background is that I had several run-ins with User:Hkelkar. For a long time I dealt with him with far more patience than was managed by any other editor. He accused me more than once of antisemitism, then apologised, then when he was accused of the violations of policy that eventually got him banned, he begged me to support him, but when I saw the diffs I didn't feel I could. Following that, he has returned regularly in the form of sockpuppets and IPs, wikistalking me and some other editors. On this occasion the irony is that I was going to go directly to putting in a Wikiquette advice request but it said that you should have already warned the user. I tried to do that and did so rather impatiently. I know that I have a tendency to engage with people who turn out to be trolls but this time I have probably gone too far the other way. You're a really experienced user, I know, and if you had time to cast an eye on the Dalit Voice and V.T. Rajshekar pages, I would very much appreciate it. Itsmejudith 13:17, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Further to the above and to your edits to the relevant pages, I wondered if you had an opinion about whether the balance of material is right between the Dalit Voice and the V.T. Rajshekar pages and whether there is too much overlap. I've found this very difficult to get right when edits that I consider to enhance NPOV and to be well within WP guidelines have been immediately reverted with edit summaries accusing POV. With more people editing it should be easier. Best wishes. Itsmejudith 08:10, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Swiss Jews article[edit]

Hi Tomer, Shavua Tov. Could you do your admin magic and move the Swiss Jews (fix the redirect) to its true name as History of the Jews in Switzerland to fit in with all the other articles in Category:Jewish history by country. One or two people had some discussion about this a while back (see Talk:Swiss Jews#Requested move) but it is ridiculous to claim that there is "consensus" if 99% of all articles are like this, and the only exception is for true/unique Jewish ethnicities, such as Georgian Jews for example. Thanks a lot, IZAK 17:08, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Jews in the Philippines article[edit]

Hi, the Jews in the Philippines article needs the same thing as above, help to go to History of the Jews in the Philippines. Thanks. IZAK 15:31, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Jews and Judaism in Japan article[edit]

Hi again, same thing with the Jews and Judaism in Japan needs to go to History of the Jews in Japan. These are the odd men out. IZAK 15:34, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your sig[edit]

Tomer, hello. I note your signature still has a link to Esperanza, despite the fact that this is now an inactive project. Is that intentional? JFW | T@lk 00:44, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Approve of new sig, apart from the fact that I cannot see a link between the letter "E" and contributions (apart of course from editcountitis). JFW | T@lk 08:32, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish history of Wales & N. Ireland needed[edit]

Hello Tomer: Hope all goes well with you and yours. The series of articles on the History of the Jews in Europe is complete. All the European countries have articles, even if they are stubs for now. However there are still two more: History of the Jews in Wales and History of the Jews in Northern Ireland (see related articles History of the Jews in England and History of the Jews in Scotland) that are listed as countries in template {{|Europe topic|History of the Jews in}} that require someone to add information and start the article. If you are able to, your efforts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, IZAK 13:10, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish Bolshevism & The Jewish Bolshevism & Żydokomuna[edit]

Hi again Tomer: Very troubling developments at Jewish Bolshevism & The Jewish Bolshevism & Żydokomuna. Why three articles about the same antisemitic and hateful subject? Maybe it's time to look into this a little deeper. Thank you, IZAK 17:39, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Admin help required with vandalism of nomination page[edit]

Hi Tomer: Unfortunately, there is a user Ludvikus (talk · contribs) who is tampering with the formatting of a nomination page [7]. See the wildness of what he is doing at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Protocols of Zion (imprints). He is inserting and changing the original formatting and even the wording, totally unheard of. Please take a look at it. Thanks a lot. IZAK 15:07, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bnei Menashe[edit]

"what on earth? That is _not_ what the article says. this is supposed to be an encyclopedia, not a 2nd grade book report"

Dude, I'll ignore your hilarious assessment and instead question your comprehension of English.........that is exactly what it says.

"Having successfully completed this task, the priest would place the animal on an altar and offer it up to God, in the process reciting a series of ancient Bnei Menashe chants and prayers. Perhaps the most extraordinary of them is known among the Bnei Menashe as "Miriam's song." We had to cross the Red Sea," it began. "Our enemies were coming after us with chariots but the sea swallowed them all as if they were meat. We are led by the cloud during the day and by fire at night. Take those birds for the food, and drink water coming out from the rock."

Now you may not like this but I have checked with a range of Kuki Chin elders; their collective opinion is that not only the name "Miriam's Song" but everything the non-English/Hebrew-speaking 81yo Mendel Kingbol is reported as claiming in this partisan article by Michael Freund is balderdash to put it kindly. Finally, these are NOT your people or your history being discussed, it's mine. You share a religion, not an ethnicity; the sooner you accept that and get on with supporting them in a practical manner instead of petty wiki comments/deletions, the better their chances of integrating into Israeli society. Migration is tough on anyone, including the faithful.Cheers, Junglebells Jinglebells01 —Preceding comment was added at 22:42, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

why has no one exposed the SOCKPUPPET Jinglebells01 (a/k/a Junglebells, Hellsbells222, Hellsbellsinheaven, etc.), the user with the most contributions to the Bnei Menashe page & a particular thorn in your side? Divebomber1 —Preceding comment was added at 16:47, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Divebomber old chap, please see my user page and the BM discussion page re my alleged *sockpuppetry*. I have no interest in being a thorn in TShilo AKA Tomer's or anyone else's side:-( but thank you for pointing out that I've made the most contributions to the BM page - especially as it's been rated B and midlevel importance, not to mention the most linked page for the BM! Was it by any chance you or an alterego who tried to block me as a suspected sockpuppet??? Junglebells 02:49, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Shalom[edit]

Just to clarify a bit. 1. The word offensive was perhaps over the top but Luzzatto was a prominent Bible scholar (if a bit outdated) and I was unhappy with the way you pushed him off w/o source or counterargument. 2. I did not add the Shalom etymology but it is certainly within the realm of possibility. If the word Yiru Shalem by MalkiTsedex is referring to Shalim (as EJ) thinks it is very small step to the modern word shalom from WP:Ugaritic "The vocabulary is amazingly close to biblical Hebrew — many Ugaritic words are letter-for-letter the same as biblical Hebrew" definitely not ridiculous. Shalom[edit]

Pagan was my inexact translation. I take it you don't read hebrew. He actually compares him to the Roman Jupiter who is above all other gods (i.e. henotheism). Interesting that you found only "some" of his arguments against Maimoniddes invalid (Zvi Chajes has whole work Tiferes Moshe to counteract Shadal on Rambam) and all of his arguments against Ibn Ezra invalid (Shadal later backed down on this position). Shadal's distinction between Atticism and Judaism was mainly a response to the Enlightenment and the Reform movement (the Reformers used Maimonides reasons for mitzvos (to counteract idolatry) as an excuse to call for the abrogation of the commandments.) I don't believe that he really felt that way about Rambam or Ibn Ezra. In any event, agree with you that this particular etymology needed better sourcing and wording. Shadal and Hirsch[edit]

Then you must have similar complaints against R' Samson Raphael Hirsch who also attacked Maimonides reasons for mitzvot, for much the same reason. (From which source did you read up on Shadal that left ou with such a negative impression? He was one of the few Modern Rabbis who had a geniuine love for Judaism and attempted to transmit this love to the Jews of his generation) Gutt VochWolf2191 04:51, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nominations of Texas Jews articles for deletion[edit]

Hi Tomer: Your input would be greatly appreciated at the discussion Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism#Nominations of Texas Jews articles for deletion. Thanks a lot, IZAK 21:19, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please assume good faith. Why on earth would I be vandalising a template I created and frequently maintain? The template is used on many articles, and your edit broke it on most. There is lots of explanation of how the template works on its talk page, or at Wikipedia:Guidelines for "(Continent/region) topic" templates. Warofdreams talk 01:46, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Consider yourself forgiven! The continent topic templates do get a lot of similar edits from users who usually quickly realise their mistake, but I probably should have used an edit summary when reverting to ensure my reasons were clear.
