Thanks for the note. I will try to expand the Fleming article when I get time - the football career section is rather brief. With regard to the family, can you add details of his mother & wife? These things are supposed to be referenced to independent sources, but I doubt if these are available. Enjoy Wikipedia. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 11:44, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article David (DEN) Davies has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Game of Life

[edit]

Thanks for your compliments and if you really want to know the definition of "mesmerizing animation" my/Zom-B's Mandelbrot zoom in animation might be worth a peak too. It was originally on the Game of Life page but some user claimed it had no place there because the page already had two animations. Simpsons contributor (talk) 10:24, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Alan Wilson (composer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No independent sources to establish WP:notability

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. noq (talk) 12:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Douglas Adams

[edit]

Can you please supply proper sources for your edit? I would love to include something of the sort but it cannot go in without a reference. --John (talk) 22:05, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, fair enough. At least I tried :-) It is something I feel strongly about: I first mentioned it on the Talk:The_Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(radio_series)#Cult_following page, where you will see that I list out the first 10 hits on that search in the New Scientist archive. As I say on that page, he gets about 80 hits in 1000 issues of New Scientist... which is more than I would imagine any single scientist achieving... even Einstein might struggle to get that many hits. So, yes, we could certainly turn each of those (or at least the best ones) into conventional bibliographic references. However, that's not exactly what you are asking for... we would have to go through those articles to find which ones not only liken the scientific idea to the Douglas Adams idea, but also comment on how the latter was remarkable in pre-dating the former. I am sure that I remember that some of those articles do indeed say something like that. It would just take a bit of research (which I could do), provided that you first confirm that this would be time well spent :-) (Well done, BTW, for the banner on your talk page :-) ) TheAMmollusc (talk) 07:44, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think a well-sourced addition of that sort would be well worth it. I have access to the NS online archive so maybe I can even help you. --John (talk) 06:24, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will see what I can do when I get back (after a week's break) TheAMmollusc (talk) 13:05, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See also sections discouraged.--Doc James (talk · contribs ·email) 17:53, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know :-) I am aware of the danger, and certainly, I take your point. Indeed, the Wikipedia:Orphan#Suggestions_for_how_to_de-orphan_an_article section does say as much. The problem is that by tackling the orphaned articles backlog, I am constantly encountering (and thereby learning about) subjects that are new to me. Although I do my best to read each article as thoroughly as I can, I remain a novice in the new subject, and consider it safest to put the reference to the orphaned article in the See also section, and let an editor more expert than I work out how to weave it better into the main part of the article. However, as I say, I take your point. TheAMmollusc (talk) 07:48, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ron Lane

[edit]

Hiya, just to let you know, I decided, in an idle moment, to have a go at creating a page on Ron Lane. :) I created just enough to stop the page being instantly labelled a stub. But if you know any more information about him (I'm neither a resident of Dibden Purlieu nor knowledgeable about wood sculpture) then feel free to add it to the page - it could do with a bit more fleshing out. Pasicles (talk) 19:32, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I noticed it yesterday, and had a look, and was suitably impressed. Well done! No, I can't say I have a great deal more to add. I know the name of the lane that he lived in (Watermans Lane) and remember the wood-carved plate on his gate (complete with little mice I think it was). Contrary to what it says on the Dibden Purlieu WP page (and hence, also, now on the Ron Lane page), I don't believe that Dibden Purlieu is technically in the New Forest (with the boundary lieing immediately outside the village, on the other side of the main road between Fawley and Totton). If you can think of anything that I might be able to look into, then do ask... but I can't guarantee anything... I live a long way away from there, now. TheAMmollusc (talk) 06:38, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I have reverted your edit to nanotechnology. Adding a link to an article page in order to encourage editors to review the linked article is not helpful to our readers. If you need a review, ask at a suitable page, not in the mainspace. The article is a one sentence dicdef stub which you suspect ought to be proded. It should not be linked anywhere.

I also do not approve of the practice of linking rubbish articles merely for the sake of de-orphaning them. The link should always be of some benefit to the reader. SpinningSpark 12:12, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I take your points (especially the one about asking at a suitable page, which I have, indeed, done in the past on other occasions). I would like to add one observation, though: I do find it comes, to me, as a slight shock that you seem to imply the existence of two distinct populations (us and them) on Wikipedia; until you wrote that, I had always been thinking of it as a single population (those users who have never edited an article are simply users who have not yet started editing articles). As I say, though, I take your points. TheAMmollusc (talk) 10:36, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of course there are two distinct populations. The vast majority of Wikipeida users have never edited an article, and most never will. It is not "us and them" though; most editors probably read something now and then as well. Actually, you could say there were more than two groups; the community of editors has little overlap with the community of developers, who are just as important for keeping this place going. Dear Author/TheAMoullsc

My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address recently edited an article on Age-related muscular degeneration. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please visit my Talk page or e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. Also, others interested in the study may contact me! If I do not hear back from you I will not contact this account again. Thank you very much in advance. Yes, count me "In". How do you wish to correspond... should I contact you by email, or do we communicate via our talk pages? TheAMmollusc (talk) 07:43, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello TheAmoullusc, Thank you for your reply (sorry to have misspelled your name earlier!!). Yes, you can e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. All you will be asked to do is read the ethics form and agree to do the study- I need the informed consent from all participants. Then I will ask you you answer a short online questionnaire followed by an interview (either via Skype or I can send you a list of questions and you can write them out and send them back to me in your own time). Look forward to hearing from you! Nuša Hydra Rain (talk) 09:22, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Congratulations on your linking work so far - it is doing what I originally hoped and making the list a worthwhile directory for interested readers / museum visitors. Sorry, I don't live anywhere near the museum so no chance of pics or sharing their information plaques. I have no information sources other than Google, so I doubt that I can materially help you with the article. (I tend to write articles erratically based on nothing other than whim, or something that catches my attention, often a non-sequitur or a crie de coeur or a nonsensical claim. To wit I was only at the museum list because of a Rene Lalique... car ornaments... Spirit of Ecstacy... Eleanor Thornton... Salacious illicit sex... John Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu... Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu... more sex scandal... leading inevitably to a drop down list of old bangers :) ) Regards. Good luck. Hello TheAMmollusc, I hope you remember speaking to me in the summer of 2012 about your motivations for contributing to the health-related pages on Wikipedia. The great news is that the study got published this Wednesday in JMIR (Journal of Medical Internet Research). You can read it here: http://www.jmir.org/2014/12/e260 This would not have been possible without your contributions so once again, I would like to thank you for taking the time and sharing your experiences with me. I also wrote an entry about my own experience with the study, about additional observations and how I plan to further extend my research - published in the WMF blog today: https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2014/12/who-writes-wikipedias-health-and-medical-pages-and-why/If you have any comments or questions please get in touch.Perhaps see you at the next Wikimania conference in Mexico! deOrphaning script

[edit]

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list or alternatively to opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Opted-out of message delivery to your user talk page.
