クラウディアヌス(Claudianus 370年頃 - 404年頃）は、メディオラヌム(ミラノ)に置かれていたローマ皇帝ホノリウスの宮廷に属し、特に将軍スティリコと関わりを持ったラテン語詩人である。作品はほとんどヘクサメトロスあるいはエレギアックカプレット詩形 (Elegiac couplet)で書かれており、ホノリウス帝への詩や、スティリコへの詩、神話叙事詩といった3つに大別される[1]。

生涯[編集]

クラウディアヌスはアレクサンドリアにて誕生した。クラウディアヌスは394年にローマを訪れ、二人の若いパトロンであるプロビヌスや、395年に執政官に就任したオリブリウスを讃える詩で宮廷詩人としての地位を確立した[2]。クラウディアヌス自身のパトロンだった執政官のために、多くの称賛された演説文や、スティリコの功績を称える詩、さらに東方正帝アルカディウスの宮廷にいたスティリコのライバルに向けた悪口などを書いた。

クラウディアヌスの個人的な私生活についてはほとんど知られていないが、確信的な異教徒であったと思われる。アウグスティヌスは彼を「キリストの名における敵対者」と呼び（Civitas Dei, V, 26）、パウル・オロシウスは『歴史上の異教徒への反証』（VII, 55）の中でクラウディアヌスを「頑迷な異教徒」（paganus pervicassimus）と表現している。

クラウディアヌスは政治的立場もあって十分すぎるほどの恩賞を獲得している。実際にクラウディアヌスは称号「vir illustris」の地位を授与されている。400年にローマ元老院はフォロ・ロマーノにクラウディアヌスの銅像を建立した[3]。スティリコの妻セレーナはクラウディアヌスのために金持ちの夫人を用意した[4]。

クラウディアヌスの詩には404年以降のスティリコの功績を記したものがないため、学者たちはクラウディアヌスが404年に亡くなったと推測している。

詩人[編集]

クラウディアヌスはギリシア語を母語とするが、古代末期における最高のラテン語詩人の一人である。ラテン語詩人としてトップクラスに位置づけられることはないが、彼の文章は優雅で良質な物語を著しており、そしてまた彼のポレミックには時として比類がないほどの面白い辛辣な皮肉を展開させていくのである。この時代の文学は一般に現代の批評家たちからすれば、見かけが良く感じるような性質を持っているが、クラウディアヌスの作品にはそれがなく、彼を冷たく無感情だと感じる人もいる。

クラウディアヌスの詩は、大いに称賛する傾向がある演説によって歪曲されてはいるが、貴重な歴史的資料である。スティリコに関連する歴史詩や政治詩は、クラウディアヌスの他の作品とは別系統の写本が伝わっており、おそらくクラウディアヌスの死後、スティリコ自身によって独自の詩集として刊行された可能性がある。

彼の最も重要な非政治的作品は未完の叙事詩『De raptu Proserpinae』（プロセルピナの誘拐）である。現存する3冊の著作は、395年と397年に執筆されたと考えられている。20世紀から21世紀初頭にかけてクラウディアヌスは古代の最も人気のあるラテン語詩人の一人ではなかったが、叙事詩『De raptu』は何世紀にもわたって絵画や詩に影響を与えたという[5]。
