Review

[edit]

Paul, please review this.
Draft:Central–Western Economic Corridor
Draft:Northern Economic Corridor
Draft:Northeastern Economic Corridor 2001:FB1:8B:8A53:7CD5:9075:3A65:6A05 (talk) 00:23, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a regular AfC reviewer, so for that you might want to submit it through the usual process or ask someone else. I would comment, though, that unlike the EEC, which was the subject of a lot of sustained news coverage, these other economic corridor projects don't seem to be individually notable, and should probably be covered together under a single article, or as a section under an existing one. --Paul_012 (talk) 06:37, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm I think CEWC is important enough, If we're talking about news coverage, there are even videos about CEWC, such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDqT2bNGiJ0. However, I can't seem to find any videos on NEC or NEEC though.2001:FB1:8B:8A53:81A0:2FF9:E563:A522 (talk) 07:46, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, do you think that if I submit it, the admins will delete the page and consider it as advertising? 2001:FB1:8B:8A53:A5ED:C82E:CE2F:1097 (talk) 08:52, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I still think all of them should have a separate page instead of being under SEZ. Alternatively, we could consider merging NEC, NEEC, SEC, and CEWC under a single page for Special Economic Corridors of Thailand. 2001:FB1:8B:8A53:AC27:BD11:C95A:6229 (talk) 12:01, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They shouldn't be at risk of speedy deletion for advertising, though they may not be accepted with the current references. I think they'd have better chance if combined under a single article. --Paul_012 (talk) 14:38, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Draft:Special economic zones (Thailand): I am unsure if this article will cover all of the economic zones in Thailand, including NEC, NEEC, SEC, CEWC, and EEC.2001:FB1:8B:8A53:7D46:BB64:5227:A6C6 (talk) 18:33, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good start. I think it could be developed either way (expanding to include the ECs, or having them as a separate article). Combining would allow for a single overview of their history, since their development is under the same government agency, but if/once they become more developed with a lot of content having them as separate articles might be better for readability. --Paul_012 (talk) 07:22, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

about inventions

[edit]

Why did you remove the Elide Fire Extinguishing Ball from the list of Thai inventions? Was it not invented by a Thai person? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Thai_inventions_and_discoveries&oldid=989191021. Also, I feel like all traditional martial arts, sports, and musical instruments should be included. 2001:FB1:88:A95C:BDBC:269C:4F0F:6C71 (talk) 11:23, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As noted in the edit summary, it appeared to be a single product by one company and not notable according to Wikipedia's criteria. As for the second point, I am of the opinion that "inventions and discoveries" refers to scientific and technological advancements, not cultural heritage. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:16, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point regarding cultural heritage. However, the Elide Fire Extinguishing Ball has won multiple awards and is recognized in multiple countries, which could demonstrate its notability. 2001:FB1:88:A95C:6C7D:862B:3F90:A1E5 (talk) 22:17, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I could be wrong about the fire-extinguishing ball. I won't revert if someone re-adds it. In cases like this, writing the article first would also help to more clearly demonstrate notability. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:58, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question of proposed deletion and suggestion

Hi, I got proposed deletion from Prachin Buri radiation accident Which I don't agree with that propose. Because If there is no one make the Page then there will be none. For example in thai page. Sorry, I already retracted the proposed deletion but forgot to remove the message from your talk page.
You shouldn't have copied from the Samut Prakan radiation accident article, though, as the circumstances were very different and as such the copied content was wildly incorrect, short and abruptly ending as it was. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:36, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Usage of surname template

[edit]

I removed the surname template from Lamsam family because it doesn't seem applicable when I read the template documentation. Moreover, a quick browse through hundreds of articles transcluding the template couldn't find any articles with Family in its title. And Family articles, e.g. those in Category:Business families of the United States don't seem to use the template at all. Aithus (talk) 18:11, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I redirected Lamsam to Lamsam family when creating the page and included the name list as a section there as the surname is exclusive to the family. If the name list was a separate page, the template would be included as standard, but the documented guidance doesn't quite fit this specific case. I think it's most within the spirit of the template to have it, as there is a name list in the article and pages linking directly to Lamsam should be corrected if they meant a specific person. --Paul_012 (talk) 11:03, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that this case is can be argued either way and I won't try to remove it again. I find it strange, however, that if the surname template is used, any short description specified will be overridden by a standard "Surname list" text. Aithus (talk) 12:48, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Paul, do you think the Wikipedia article on Sbai should be merged into the page on Shawl-like garment? I feel like the current article on Sbai places too much emphasis on its connection to Cambodia. I understand your point regarding the tik tok video, however, the editor claims to have taken the pic in November 2022, predating the tik tok upload. They've uploaded a number of other files, and have been selective in claiming authorship, or giving credit. Not sure about this one. Onel5969 TT me 12:27, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm rather familiar with the contributor. He's contributed to dozens of articles on luk thung singers over many years; this one is very much within his normal area of interest. And he's literally a school student. It's very unlikely that he's connected to the subject by employment. A false claim on the Commons upload, of which he has a history, is a much more likely explanation. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:43, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Guidance

[edit]

Hi Paul, I need little guidance, I am trying to upskill myself in tech field, hence exploring Wikipedia opportunities. Could you please let me know apart from HTML what domain majorly used in article making? BrightsForever (talk) 20:30, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia, like all sites using the MediaWiki software, uses wiki markup to format its pages. I don't know if you've been using the source editor, but if so, you're probably already familiar with it. Otherwise, see Help:Wikitext for a guide. Other than that, there's MediaWiki's template system (Help:Template), and more advanced features are implemented using the WP:Lua programming language. All of these are only used by MediaWiki, though, so they might not be a very useful skillset elsewhere. Not sure if this answers your question; let me know if not. --Paul_012 (talk) 07:26, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Train stations and notability

[edit]

I just saw the closed discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Si Bearing MRT station. Are you familiar with this RfC from July 2022 regarding notability of train stations? I see someone cited the 2019 discussion which the 2022 one supersedes, but not the 2022 one - I'm a little aghast that this happened. I'm not familiar with the details on this particular station, but you might have a case for DRV as most of the keep arguments are directly contradicting the RfC's close of "There clear is consensus that train stations have no inherent notability." Trainsandotherthings (talk) 22:49, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the pointer. I knew of the 2019 RfC, but indeed not the 2022 one. I didn't think that that AfD singling out a single station was the best way to address the issue, so I didn't argue more strongly on the lack of source coverage. But the fact is also that past experience has made me averse to trying to enforce policy on railway station notability through AfD, as they seem to always turn into a battle against people piling on with I-like-it !votes not based in policy, RfC or no. --Paul_012 (talk) 07:41, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pages still under review

the pages Adolescent (mini album),Gawin Caskey and Bhasidi Petchsutee are still not visible in any search engine. Are they still under review? LoveBright247 (talk) 18:37, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's probably the case. Newly created pages won't be indexed by search engines until they are reviewed by the WP:New pages patrol process, or 90 days have passed. See WP:Controlling search engine indexing for details. NPP isn't supposed to be a stringent review by any means, but the queue is unfortunately often backlogged and pages may go unnoticed for some time. I appreciate your reply. It took more than a year for the article to be promoted on the Thai Wikipedia. I do not know how long it will take on the English Wikipedia. Most students are here for a relatively short term to learn some skills and experience. However, we are expected to be long-term volunteers who can take over the task if needed. My support for the article is to set a good example for both
  1. WP:BLP and
  2. composing/writing a comprehensive article from variety of online/printed sources rather than a mere translation of existing article from another language.

Translation help needed

[edit]

Hello,

Back in 2002, someone tried to make an article entitled ร์โ«นยฌรงโ«ฐยนรจยงรจยงยฃ on Wikipedia, which infamously got mojibaked. My attempts at translating it via Google have rendered it as either 'The Thai Money "Factory"' or a misspelling of "Royal Theater", but your translation help would greatly be appreciated; even if it's garbled (which I highly suspect), maybe you can suss out what was meant back then.

Regards,

– John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 03:46, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's pure gibberish, and Google Translate's suggested "corrections" are also meaningless nonsensical character sequences that certainly don't translate to anything. Not sure why Thai was thought to be the intended encoding? --Paul_012 (talk) 05:04, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
From several encodings I tested from UTF-8, x-mac-thai was the only one without any "?"s or other faulty characters. Regarding your dePROD of Miss Thailand Universe 2003 and others in the series. I'm not OK with unreferenced articles standing. Jean Trescases death’s place

[edit]

Thanks you for your modification and yes I think that the death’s place aren’t Thailand 🇹🇭 but Vietnam 🇻🇳 because the source says « point d’appui de Bai Tho » and Bai Tho is a location point in Vietnam. But I am not sure at 100%. I find also this : Bang Son ตำบล บางซ่อน, Ban Pho, Province de Chachoengsoa, Thaïlande Yes it’s in French because I am French. The first reference can be Vietnam (Bai Tho) but the second one can be Thailand. In this source : https://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defense.gouv.fr/fr/arkotheque/client/mdh/guerre_indochine/detail_fiche.php?ref=1633325&debut=0 (by the French Government) It says that Jean was kill in Bang-Son in Tonkin and Tonkin is the north of Vietnam Have a nice weekend. Yuilo (talk) 08:24, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It obviously can't have been the Thai place, which is unrelated, since he died in the First Indochina War. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:44, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help ! I am going to modify the page Yuilo (talk) 08:50, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On wiki data, we can see Bang Son Thailand. So I am going to modify it Yuilo (talk) 10:52, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikidata only allows statements to link to existing items, and there's no Bang Son in Vietnam listed on Wikidata (nor enough information to support creating a new item). I've changed the statement to Tonkin instead. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:40, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks you very much Yuilo (talk) 06:55, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Short mackerel "Not within scope of WikiProject Oceans"

[edit]

Can you explain this edit [6]? I'm curious about the rationale. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 15:46, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The scope of WP:WikiProject Oceans is described as follows:

The scope of this project will include the articles within the Category:Oceans, Category:Seas, and Category:Gulfs, given the often ill-defined boundaries between such bodies. However, should there develop other projects with overlapping scope, this project will deal primarily with those articles which do not fall within the scope of any of those other projects.

My reading of this is that it does not include fishes, and indeed, checking a few pages through Category:WikiProject Oceans articles, I don't see any fish articles. But you could ask at WT:WikiProject Oceans to make sure. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:30, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I should ask it on the page which contains the discussion "Discussion about new article on marine resources?" and clearly treats marine resources as within the scope of the project? Fish are marine resources. I also see a large number of fish and related topics in the linked articles category. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 17:32, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Given-name hatnotes

[edit]

You recently reverted my edit on Rak Panyarachun, removing the given-name hatnote I had added, which you called "more distracting than helpful" and "generally unnecessary". Why is a footnote is a better solution? What's your criterion for given-name hatnotes? Would you ever use them? WBritten (talk) 08:32, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm of the position that hatnotes should comply with the WP:Hatnote guideline, i.e. they should be reserved for letting readers know if they're in the wrong place and direct them to the article they're looking for. They're placed prominently at the top of articles so that readers will see them before they waste time reading the wrong article.
This is a similar issue to surname-clarification hatnotes. Their use actually violates the guideline, though their long existence has led to them being tolerated for certain groups of articles, mostly East Asian biographies. I'm not updated on the community's position, the latest discussion I know of being from 2012, where there was no consensus on the issue. More recently, some editors have preferred replacing them with footnotes, which I agree are more appropriate for their function—to provide information about the current article's subject. The reader shouldn't be distracted with information about which is a person's given name and surname (along with several minimally relevant links) before they even read a single word about said person.
For Thai names, there's usually no need for clarification as they follow the order most English readers would be familiar with, though there are uncommon cases where confusion has arisen. In such cases, I would favour using footnotes to clarify the name.
In given-name notices, the clarification is mixed in with an explanation on how to refer to people, which needs asking: who is this instruction meant for? If it's for editors (who might be unaware and incorrectly change the text), such messages should be given via in-source comments or edit notices, not hatnotes, which are for the reader. But if it's for the reader, such explanation isn't really necessary as it's deducible from reading the article, provided they know which is the given name. So the only concern would be that a reader unfamiliar with the culture may come upon an article, see references to the first name, and become confused as to which is the given name and surname.
It's a valid concern, but one that isn't very significant, considering that it's a piece of information that only has to be learned once (unlike, say, with Japanese names, which are often ordered inconsistently). After that it just becomes a repetitive distraction. Template:Thai name has already been deleted three times (twice at TfD, the first time was after it was manually orphaned) because of this. That doesn't mean there's absolutely no place for clarifications notes, but I would favour limiting them to names that are actually likely to be confused, such as people whose field of work makes them likely to be looked up by readers who've never read anything about Thai people. And as mentioned above, I think that footnotes, not hatnotes, are the appropriate format. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thai TV insight?

[edit]

I'm wondering if you have any insight about whether there's a notable topic to be extracted from TV24 (Thailand)--I haven't been able to find adequate sources for the title as-written, but my ability to work with Thai is limited. signed, Rosguill talk 19:24, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Like its counterparts, it's more notable under its former name Asia Update. In addition to the Bangkok Post piece currently cited, there's coverage in The Nation and Khaosod English. This one's more readable so I think it should be rescuable without starting from scratch—most of the relevant info can probably be found in Thai sources. --Paul_012 (talk) 04:40, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Apologies if you think the move was inappropriate or drastic. I just IARred went bold. I didn't think it would be contentious. To be honest, the title just seems bare without a locale indicated. But whatever. I don't think it's worth opening a discussion but if you disagree... Yours. Tkaras1 (talk) 04:53, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about it. Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for contributing. Basically, Wikipedia articles generally only use parenthetical qualifiers when the title would be ambiguous without them. The practice is called "disambiguation" on Wikipedia. Since the date already precisely identifies the topic, there is no need for disambiguation here. See the WP:Article titles guideline for details. --Paul_012 (talk) 05:05, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some sources cite "Thammasat University massacre". Tkaras1 (talk) 12:58, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When considering article titles (and also other matters) it's a good idea to look at the article talk page to see if there have been past discussions on the issue. In this case the page had been renamed to Thammasat University massacre in 2010, and then back to 6 October 1976 massacre in 2020, following WP:Requested move discussions. For pages with such previous consensus, you should discuss further renaming proposals on the talk page first. --Paul_012 (talk) 13:02, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Territorial losses of Thailand

[edit]

Hello. What do you mean? Article is about concept in Thai historiography. Eurohunter (talk) 15:20, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A large part of the article's coverage is dedicated to two sets of maps, known as the Historical Atlas of Thailand and Map of the History of Thailand's Boundary, which were created to propagate the concept and are inherently related to the main topic. Both titles redirect to the main article. If you think that the map categories shouldn't be on the main article, please move them to the redirect pages instead, per WP:SUBTOPICCAT; I won't oppose that. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:43, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So Historical Atlas of Thailand and Map of the History of Thailand's Boundary should be categorised with category for maps instead of article about concept. Eurohunter (talk) 17:01, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be fine by me. Though I do think it's easier for navigation if the categories are kept on the main article. --Paul_012 (talk) 09:01, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paul 012, I think you misunderstand this

His legal Thai name is just Patrick Nattawat Finkler Patrick is not a nickname, but a real name. Nattawat is the middle name in Thai.

If the name of this article is changed, it should be the name that is commonly known in the profession, namely Patrick Finkler or Yin Haoyu. His full legal name is Patrick Nattawat Finkler, and the media in Thailand will refer to him in Thai as Patrick Nattawat.

As there are reliable sources in Thai, English and Chinese, please check the information before making changes. He doesn't have a Thai name like other Thai people. which is normal for Thai people who are mixed race

Wikipedia's naming convention is to stick to the usual Forename Surname format. Correct as you reason. But the previous name is correct in this article. There are reliable sources of information. There are sources that consistently refer to him. His name Patrick is not a nickname. His full name according to the law used to apply to study at a Thai high school. And the university in China is Patrick Nattawat Finkler. There is a certificate of his name in the reference source as confirmation. You can find truthful information about him.

Please change the redirect back to his correct name. moved page Nattawat Finkler to Patrick Nattawat Finkler He currently lives and works in China. Known as Patrick Finkler, in China he goes only by the name Yin Haoyu, and Thai news agencies refer to him as Patrick Nattawat.

Hatnote on Boys' love

[edit]

Not trying to argue about policy because clearly you're a more experienced editor than I am, I'm just quoting WP:HATNOTERULES; If a notable topic X is commonly referred to as "Foo", but the article "Foo" is not about X, there must be a hatnote linking to the article on X. That's why I put the "BL" dab link on the hatnote, because of this rule, its relation to the article title, and so readers could "find the page they are looking for" more easily with a dab page. Again, I'm not looking to argue or be educated, please feel free to ignore this message. Cheers! — ‎‎‎hhypeboyh 💬✏️ 08:36, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're misunderstanding the passage you quoted. What it means is that if BL is an article about something else, there will then need to be a hatnote at the top of the BL page pointing to Boys' love, not the other way round. (But also, BL is not an article about something else. It's a disambiguation page that already prominently links bank to Boys' love in the opening. So nothing is needed here.) --Paul_012 (talk) 12:34, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

edit comment

I merely fixed what was incorrect. The city of Bangkok became the capital of Siam after Thonburi. Thonburi wasn't part of Bangkok until 1972. Chayapol Suesatayasilp (talk) 09:02, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article is about the current city of Bangkok, not Rattanakosin or Phra Nakhon. As such, the history covers both Thonburi and Rattanakosin. And if you think of it carefully, the name Bangkok, from บางกอก, originally referred to Thonburi, not the eastern capital. Also, your edit introduced an error, saying that Rattanakosin came prior to Thonburi, when it's the opposite. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:20, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

More info on Maxine and Robert G. North

[edit]

Hi!! Thank you SO MUCH for all of your work. I'm writing a history thesis on the development of American tourism in Thailand during the Cold War, and Maxine North is a really interesting figure in all of this. I see that you made the pages for Maxine and Robert G. North -- how did you find out about these people and where did you find sourcing for them? A lot of my sourcing is from your stuff, plus some archival newspaper clippings that I have. I'm trying to flesh out Maxine North's life for a chapter of my thesis, and any help would be much appreciated! Apae02 (talk) 03:08, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, I'm glad you found the articles useful. It started with my looking up info about the Polaris bottled water brand, then one thing led to another as I digged deeper and found out more about Maxine and Robert's colourful life stories. All the sources I used were found online through Google web, news, and Scholar searches, plus online newspaper archives and primary documents from Ancestry.com, which I accessed through WP:The Wikipedia Library. (It was my first time using those sites, and quite an experience, seeing the breadth and depth of records available there.) There are two citations that I haven't been able to access original text of, which are noted on the article talk pages: Warren, William L. (February 1969). "Maxine North: Bangkok's only lady tycoon". Venture. Vol. 6. And Robert's obituary in Far East Film News. They're also covered in The March of Time newsreel "Bangkok: Oasis On a Troubled Continent", which has previews on Getty Images.[7][8][9] It's not really in-depth, but contains some nice video footage. --Paul_012 (talk) 13:36, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
