News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2021).

    Administrator changes

    removed AlexandriaHappyme22RexxS

    Guideline and policy news

    • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
    • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

    Technical news

    • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
    • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

    welcome to WP:HIST[edit]

Hi there. I am the Lead Coordinator for WikiProject History. I would like to thank you for joining the WikiProject. If you wish, could you please go back to the list of participants, and revise your listing there, by adding your signature? You can revise the date in your signature, to display the date that you actually joined.

Also, if you wish, could you please tell me which historical eras, or other historical topics that you are interested in? we would like to empower individual members, by enabling them to identify specific areas of interest.

    if you wish to help out, you can do so any time, by interacting on the project's main talk page; you can comment simply to let us know what you've been up to, or you can join one of the existing discussion posts there. And lastly, please feel free to add our userbox to your user page, if you haven't done so already. by adding this text: {{User WikiProject History}}

thanks for joining! please feel free to write any time. please ping me if you reply, by typing this text: {{ping|sm8900}} thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:26, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome sm8900. Sorry about the missing sig - fixed it now. I'm not a historian by any stretch, but I've always been a bit of a history buff. From a Wikipedia perspective, I'd say my primary interest is in the Atlantic world broadly, the circum-Caribbean world more narrowly, and the history of Trinidad and Tobago in particular. Colonisation, imperialism, and post-colonial history intrigue me, as does the interplay between plant collecting and systematics, and exploration. Guettarda (talk) 14:35, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
hi Guettarda. ok, that's terrific. no worries, re the signature; actually I just revised the page to request that data. as far as your topics of interest, that sounds great. you are welcome to join any task forces you may wish, to reflect your interests; or to set up any new ones, if you wish. it is great to have you there. looking forward to sharing ideas, as time goes on. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:38, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
say, I just checked your user page,. I had not realized before that you have been here for so long. or that you are an admin as well. you are welcome indeed!! please feel free to share any ideas that you have, at any time.
by the way, since you are an admin, could you please go to this section at the talk page for WikiProject Council, and add a note under my last note there, indicating that you have joined WP:HIST? you can also note your own length of service here, and your current active role as an admin. someone there had claimed that the WikiProject is dead, so I would like to let them know that obviously, rumors of our demise "are greatly exaggerated," to quote Mark Twain. I appreciate it. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:44, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Apologies[edit]

Just want to apologize because you were trying to get through to me in the debate on Carlton Mack and I wasn't listening. To be honest, trying to clean up Wikipedia and randomly patrol pages can be a little tricky because sometimes editors come out of the woodwork to debate how famous the topic is and it's a keep, etc. Anyways, if I make a mistake, I'm happy to correct it. In this case, I did make a mistake, and you were right, and I've withdrawn the nom. Thanks for taking the time and providing feedback. Megtetg34 (talk) 01:57, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Megtetg34: Thanks for the note. I appreciate it. Don't worry about it - people disagree over policy interpretations. Guettarda (talk) 14:47, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Port of Spain Gazette[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Port of Spain Gazette you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. DYK for Joachim Philip[edit]

On 15 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Joachim Philip, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when Joachim Philip delivered an ultimatum to the British in Grenada during Fédon's rebellion, the militia had to restrain his sister, Susannah, who otherwise would have "torn him to pieces"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Joachim Philip. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Joachim Philip), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your GA nomination of Port of Spain Gazette[edit]

The article Port of Spain Gazette you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Port of Spain Gazette for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. DYK for Isaac Hope[edit]

On 21 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Isaac Hope, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that although he was born in the United Kingdom, Isaac Hope was elected to represent Tobago on the Legislative Council of Trinidad and Tobago? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Isaac Hope. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Isaac Hope), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter[edit]

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

    • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
    • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
    • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
    • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
    • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
    • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
    • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
    • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. RfC on racial hereditarianism at the R&I talk-page[edit]

An RfC at Talk:Race and intelligence revisits the question, considered last year at WP:FTN, of whether or not the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is a fringe theory. This RfC supercedes the recent RfC on this topic at WP:RSN that was closed as improperly formulated.

Your participation is welcome. Thank you. NightHeron (talk) 22:40, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Knowing your expertise, I would love if you can help me to review and left a comment on what I can do to improve my edits. I hope that this is okay, but no pressure if you are busy. A tag has been placed on Category:1961 disestablishments in Trinidad and Tobago indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Hello[edit]

Is this how I contact you? you undid my part on the pseudoscience page I can edit the mistakes I made in writing but I also did cite sources the problem is I do not yet know how to do that right I find it confusing but I know it will be pretty simple once I know how do I link for example a number to a part in the references? the citation was there but it wasn't linked properly.

@Brecht Corbeel: There's a help page at Help:Footnotes that explains the basics of referencing. The main problem though was that you added a comment to the text. Wikipedia articles are suppose to summarise what reliable sources say, not add commentary from Wikipedians like me or you. Guettarda (talk) 12:49, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is to let you know that the National Union of Freedom Fighters article has been scheduled as today's featured article for July 12, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 12, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

It would be nice to have an image for this, but I can't see anything obvious that's free-to-use. If you think of something, the new format for TFA images is {{Main page image/TFA|image= |caption= <!-- if caption is the same as the title of article use only |title= --> }} We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Your draft article, User:Guettarda/Race[edit]

Hello, Guettarda. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Race".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! SWinxy (talk) 03:33, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SWinxy and Liz: - can one of you explain to me how G13 applies here? The article was in userspace, not draftspace, it had never been submitted to AFC, and had no placeholder text. It's trivial for me to restore this, but my understanding was that we specifically did not speedy-delete subpages of active editors. Guettarda (talk) 04:14, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, this feels incredibly shitty. Even though I know I can undelete the content myself, it feels really shitty and invasive. Guettarda (talk) 04:16, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh fuck. I'm really sorry. Yeah it is shitty to do this. The reason you got into this was because the {{userspace draft}} template was on your subpage. All I was trying to do was to help clear out stale drafts, and I read this page and thought that tagging G13 would be okay. I didn't read WP:STALE, which would have stopped me dead before I did anything. Liz (or any other admin reading this), please revert all my edits from the past 24 hours. I'm really sorry that this was so intrusive. I didn't mean it to be that way. I'm sorry. SWinxy (talk) 04:53, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, Guettarda. I work with a lot of stale drafts and our regular CSD G13 taggers are very accurate. I should have not taken this tagging for granted. I'm sorry for making you feel shitty. I'll double check everything that might have been inadvertently deleted. Liz Read! Talk! 05:28, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@SWinxy and Liz: Thanks so much for your response. I'm fine, but I'm worried about someone who felt more tentative in their position here. I know clearing backlogs can get tedious, I appreciate both of your work on this. Guettarda (talk) 20:46, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for being understanding. I was really freaking out feeling that I had done something quite wrong to someone, and I really mean no harm :(. I'll stay far away from non-talk-userspace pages for a while. Was it the notion of deleting the subject matter in particular that worried you? I don't really know what you mean by I'm worried about someone who felt more tentative in their position here. SWinxy (talk) 21:03, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@SWinxy: there are lots of people who feel like they don't really belong here, like they really aren't members of the club. I work with new editors in my day job, and so many of them feel like they need permission from "Wikipedia" to actually participate. There are other people, more experienced ones, who feel like they've been ganged up on by the community - like the person you uses their admin tools for the first time in a decade and discovers the norms have changed and get dragged to ANI.
Don't feel badly about it - there are so many rules, and we often have to break them to discover some part of them even exists. I apologise for over-reacting. Guettarda (talk) 22:57, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this).

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

    Guideline and policy news

    • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
    • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

    Technical news

    • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

    WikiCup 2021 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Plagiarism question[edit]

Thank you for identifying and deleting a recent edit one of my students did on an article that was flagged for copyright violation. I sometimes see edits that appear to be plagiarism though do not know how to confirm this or even be alerted to this being the case so I can take steps to remove and continue educating on avoiding this problem. Are there tools to help automate identifying copyright violation that can be used, even in my own editing? I would welcome adding additional help to my editing and teaching toolbox. Thank you again. --- FULBERT (talk) 11:39, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You can use this tool: https://copyvios.toolforge.org/ Hardyplants (talk) 11:53, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@FULBERT: Being a very lazy admin, I only clean up copyvios that land in my lap (or rather, my email) via the Wiki Education Dashboard reports. They are based on reports from User:EranBot's CopyPatrol reports (but screened for student usernames). Unfortunately, they only work for mainspace and (I think) draftspace. The tool Hardyplants linked to, Earwig's tool, is does a pretty good job too. Unlike EranBot, which only looks at new edits, Earwig's tool can be used for any page.
Beyond that, style and tone are often good indicators. In this case, there was a line break in the text that was the kind you get when you copy and paste from a pdf. From the perspective of my own editing, Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing was enlightening - and a bit disturbing, because I didn't even know close paraphrasing was a thing (or a problem) until that point. It's rather old now, but this editorial is still the best pieces of writing I've come across on copyvios in Wikipedia: Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/News/September 2010/Editorials (and its precursor Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/News/August 2010/Editorials). The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

    1. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) with 5072 points
    2. England Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 3276 points
    3. Rwanda Amakuru (submissions) with 3197 points
    4. New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) with 1611 points
    5. Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1571 points
    6. Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 1420 points
    7. Hog Farm (submissions) with 1043 points
    8. Republic of Venice Bloom6132 (submissions) with 528 points

All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

If you have views on whether the rules or scoring need adjustment for next year's contest, please comment on the WikiCup talk page. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2022 competition.
