Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, also alternatively translated as Omniscient Reader (Korean: 전지적 독자 시점; Hanja: 全知的讀者時點; RR: Jeonjijeog Dogja Sijeom), is a South Korean web-novel written by Sing Shong. It was first published on January 6, 2018, on the platform Munpia, and ended on February 2, 2020.[1] Naver Webtoon published an ongoing webtoon adaptation created by Redice Studio for the Korean version and Line Webtoon for the English version in 2020.[2]

Plot[edit]

Kim Dokja is an office worker who has read the novel "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World" for a large majority of his life. When the novel finally ends at chapter 3149, the world of the novel suddenly becomes reality, and Dokja becomes the only person who knows how the world will end. He attempts to change the course of the story by solving and conquering challenges, known as scenarios, which are operated by dokkaebi. Luckly, the writer known as "tls123" sent him a few gifts to help him on his journey.

Characters[edit]

Kim Dokja
Kim Dokja (Korean: 김독자; Hanja: 金獨子; RR: Kim Dok-ja) is the main protagonist of the series. He is an average office worker who has a passion for reading, his favorite web novel being "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World". However, his life takes a drastic turn when the events of the novel start unfolding in real life, and he is the only one who is aware of how the world will come to an end. With this knowledge, Dokja uses his understanding of the story to alter its course and consequently change the world as he knows it. The group of allies and companions he gathers is known as Kim Dokja's Company.
Yoo Joonghyuk
Yoo Joonghyuk (Korean: 유중혁; Hanja: 劉衆赫; RR: Yu Jung-hyeok) is the main protagonist and one of the most powerful characters of the original web novel, "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World". Although he is initially distrustful of Kim Dokja, and they frequently struggle to understand each other, they grow close, and he is referred to as Kim Dokja's "life and death companion".
Han Sooyoung
Han Sooyoung (Korean: 한수영; Hanja: 韓秀英; RR: Han Su-yeong) is the main protagonist and the author of the web-novel "SSSSS-Grade Infinite Regressor", which Kim Dokja accused of plagiarizing "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World". After Kim Dokja, she is the person with the most knowledge of the progression of "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World". Although she starts as an antagonistic figure to Kim Dokja and his allies, she later becomes a key part of Kim Dokja's Company.
Yoo Sangah
Yoo Sangah (Korean: 유상아; Hanja: 劉尚雅; RR: Yu Sang-a) is Kim Dokja's co-worker who he considers to be an ideal protagonist. She is on the subway with Kim Dokja as the events of the novel start to unfold, and she becomes a powerful figure in her own right despite not appearing in or having knowledge of the original novel.
Lee Hyunsung
Lee Hyunsung (Korean: 이현성; Hanja: 李賢誠; RR: Lee Hyeon-seong) is a former army lieutenant. He was originally a character in "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World", fighting under Yoo Joonghyuk's leadership, but he becomes Kim Dokja's ally and companion instead during this progression of the story. In the original story, Lee Hyunsung's titel was Pure Steel Sword.
Jung Heewon
Jung Heewon (Korean: 정희원; Hanja: 鄭熙媛; RR: Jeong Hui-won) was a very minor character in "Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse" as part of the "marginalized group" from Geumho station who dies early in the novel, but she is saved by and later joins Kim Dokja and his company. She eventually becomes one of the strongest people in the story.
Lee Gilyoung
Lee Gilyoung (Korean: 이길영; Hanja: 李吉永; RR: Lee Gil-yeong) is a young boy who shared a subway car with Kim Dokja at the start of the scenarios and survived. He carried a box of grasshoppers at the start of the novel, which helped others in the subway car survive, and his abilities rely on insect control.
Lee Jihye
Lee Jihye (Korean: 이지혜; Hanja: 李智慧; RR: Lee Ji-hye) is a high school student who was originally a character in "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World", fighting under Yoo Joonghyuk's leadership.
Shin Yoosung
Shin Yoosung (Korean: 신유승; Hanja: 申流承; RR: Shin Yu-seung) is a young girl who was a character in Yoo Joonghyuk's party and later a calamity in "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World". However, in the main timeline of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, she is saved and becomes one of Kim Dokja's most trusted party members.

Webtoon[edit]

An ongoing webtoon adaptation illustrated by Sleepy-C launched on Naver on May 26, 2020.[3] Its first two collected volumes were released by A.Tempo Media on December 22, 2020,[4] with nine collected volumes released as of March 2023.

The webtoon was published digitally in English by Line Webtoon on August 18, 2020. In June 2023, IZE Press, an imprint of Yen Press, announced that they have licensed both the manhwa and novel for English publication.[5]

Film[edit]

Munpia announced on September 18, 2019 that they had signed a contract with Realize Pictures to adapt Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint into five feature-length films.[19] In May 2023, Ahn Hyo-seop and Lee Min-ho were confirmed to be offered and considering the leading roles of Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk respectively.[20][21][22]

The film's casting[23] was officially confirmed on January 24, 2024, featuring Kim Ji-soo as Lee Ji-hye, Chae Soo-bin as Yoo Sang-ah, Nana as Jung Hee-won, Shin Seung-ho as Lee Hyun-sung, Park Ho-san as Gong Pil-du, and Choi Young-joon as Han Myung-oh. Kim Byung-woo serves as the director, while Won Dong-yun takes on the role of producer.

The producer also assured that "the movie has now reached its halfway point and is well on its way to its final destination".[24] Additionally, it was revealed that Han Sooyoung's casting will be unveiled upon the film's release in 2025.[25]

Plot[edit]

Kim Dokja, the main character of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint tries to change the course of the future after his favorite novel just ended. The 3149 chapter novel, known as "Three Ways to Survive a Ruined World", describes the story of Yoo Joonghyuk, a regressor who tries to save the world. After regressing 1863 times, he finally gets to the "end". However, thats where the novel ends for Kim Dokja. The Star Stream is the name of the universe in Omniscient Reader. Within the Star Stream you have the worldlines, which are timelines. Everytime a character uses a power to "turn back time", they dont actually go back in time. They go back to the beginning of a worldline. Within the Star Stream, you have constellations. These constellations are people or gods, whose stories have become so famous that they turned into a higher being. You can become a constellation by having 5 stories/fables, and having no sponsor constellation. A sponsor constellation is a constellation who can give coins, items and skills to their chosen incarnation (being below constellation, most commonly human). The constellations view the world using the streamer Dokkaebi. Coins are the currency of the Star Stream. You can use coins to buy items, but also to trade and even to gain "probability". Probability is used to restrain constellations from intefering with a weak world. If a constellation physically enters Earth, they will most likely get a probability storm, in which sparks harms the person who causes the probability overload.
